That’s a Wrap

J.Crew Mercantile faux-wrap mini dress

Another weekend has gone by and another house project has cropped up! This time it’s a leak in our kitchen ceiling that started during a heavy downpour early Sunday morning. I had gone downstairs to make coffee in the morning and discovered a wet floor, even though we didn’t leave a window open. Once the rain started to pick up again, I realized the trickle was coming out of a light fixture in the room. So, we have to call roofing contractors this morning to sort this mess.

On the upside, we were able to spend Saturday out in Madison. We kicked off the day at the farmers’ market, walked over six miles, checked out a new-to-us place for brunch, popped into the art museum, enjoyed lakeside drinks, and capped off the day with a bike ride. It’s not often that we spend the day as a tourist in our own town.

Easy Spring Style

Target - Who What Wear - Short Sleeve Babydoll Mini Dress

Don’t you just love when you go to Target with a shopping list of the essentials and you leave with a dress you’re excited to wear all season long? This little spring frock was just too good to pass up last weekend. The attention to detail with the ruffled hemline, a subtle gingham texture in the fabric, and a lining (a rarity for something with such a low price point) makes it well worth the $33 price tag and reminds me of something you’d find at Anthropologie. If you click through to the product images, you’ll see that it has ruffled cap sleeves. I thought they were too fussy and looked silly on me, so I tucked them underneath the straps and I’ll eventually have a tailor remove them.

New Look Ruffle Strappy Jumpsuit + Paravel Crossbody Capsule

Could it be that spring is finally here?! The signs of last week’s snowstorm already melted and yesterday was warm enough to don my new jumpsuit for outfit photos without my teeth chattering. I would have worn this number all day (it was that nice out), but we spent the afternoon biking to nearby breweries and bars with our some of the friends we’ve made in the neighborhood. It was my first time on a bike this year and I wasn’t sure I could manage to ride without getting the wide legs of the jumpsuit caught in the chain!

Other than that, it was a low key weekend. We attempted to swap out the old ceiling fan in our bedroom for a new one, but ended up emailing our electrician instead. The old fan was incredibly wobbly and we’re not sure the existing electrical box has enough support for the new fan. (While I’ve found myself to be fairly adept when it comes to house projects, crawling in the attic to install a new electrical box isn’t something I’m keen on.) I also ordered one of these sconces in brass with this shade to try in our living room. Schoolhouse Electric charges 10% for shipping and requires the customer to foot any return shipping costs, so I want to make sure I love it in person before ordering three more.

Checkmate

Tory Burch plaid coat + Gucci small Marmont bag

I didn’t intend to go on a week-long hiatus from the blog, but the last few days seemed to get away from me! I was incredibly sleepy in the morning thanks to the time change and still too tired after work to put any thought into worthwhile posts. That paired with my unhealthy obsession with watching the NCAA tournament led to an awfully unproductive week!

That said, let’s talk about this outfit, shall we? I feel like I’m finally settling into my personal style groove and this outfit is such a testament to that. I consistently fall back into to a modern classic aesthetic and I’m working to streamline my closet to fit with that vision and to bring some of my old favorites to the forefront again. I’ve had the dress for eight or nine years now, the coat is a favorite from a few years back, and while the bag and loafers are new, they’re such versatile pieces. I’m also rediscovering my first sartorial passion: vintage jewelry. I’m a costume jewelry die hard in all of its forms, but nothing is better than finding a special vintage piece. It feels really good to have a streamlined vision for my closet again and while I’ll dapple in the occasional trend, I’d much rather keep my focus (and spending) on the pieces that will get the most mileage year after year. Granted, this will lead to a lot of repeat performances of individual pieces on the blog, so I hope remixing items is just as inspirational as coveting new arrivals!

The Best $49 You’ll Spend This Season

March 5, 2018 by jessica 2 Comments

Leith Racerback Shift Dress

I’m not going to shut up about this dress anytime soon. Can you blame me, though? For $49, this wardrobe workhorse is the number one item you should add to your spring shopping list. The basic, no-frills shape makes it incredibly versatile. I’ve worn it just like this for work, with sneakers, and to an evening event with my favorite Lele Sadoughi necklace (this one). I love the dress so much that I also ordered the pink one to try. It ended up being kind of sheer, so I’d recommend sticking with the classic black option. (Going with the tried-and-true classics is my favorite budget-friendly tip. It’s hard to tell if something like a little black dress is a cheap thrill. Inexpensive prints and brights typically look cheap, so I save up for pricier versions of those.)

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
