The French Wardrobe: Update

December 17, 2013 by jessica Leave a Comment

image

I’m halfway through the six-month French Wardrobe Challenge and I’m still going strong! It continues to be an effective way to narrow down my sartorial needs and wants—and I’ve actually spent less money (which won’t be the case when I buy this Kate Spade coat, this dress, and a pair of Tory Burch loafers).

The items in bold are the new additions since my last update here. You’ll also notice that I added a section to record the items that got the heave-ho. This process isn’t supposed to be about accumulation; it’s about winnowing down my wardrobe to the most well-made and well-loved items. The “purged” list is my little pat on the back for getting rid of things that just take up space.

THE RULES

  1. Quality over quantity.
  2. Basics don’t count.
  3. Accessories don’t count, unless you’re spending a lot more than usual.
  4. Socks and underwear don’t count.
  5. Shoes do count.*

*I’m not counting shoes. I don’t buy an excessive amount of them to begin with.

MY PROGRESS:

  • Part of my Five: Erin Fetherston lipstick-print dress, Anthropologie cat-print dress, J.Crew Factory tartan-print sweater

  • Basics: Banana Republic black pants, Forever 21 white dress, T by Alexander Wang black skirt, J.Crew Factory polka dot popover shirt , J.Crew sweatshirt

  • Bags: Diane von Furstenberg clutch

  • Accessories: Jennifer Meyer for J.Crew bracelet, Kate Spade belt, opal ring at an antique store in Alexandria, Forever 21 ring, Lulu Frost bangle, J.Crew Factory necklace, Kate Spade bangle, Melanie Auld ring
  • Shoes: Joie tartan flats, Forever 21 d’orsay flats

  • Purged: all of my pencil skirts, 1 dress, 3 pairs of shoes, 1 necklace, 1 bracelet, 2 pairs of earrings, 2 rings

THOUGHTS:

  • I’m not particularly excited about the tartan sweater. We went to an ugly Christmas sweater party last weekend and it’s my interpretation since I refuse to spend money on one that’s truly hideous. Such a party pooper.
  • A polka dot shirt may not seem like a basic, but I’ve already it with jeans on weekends, with pants to work and underneath sleeveless dresses. It’s also as close as I’m going to get to an all-white button down.
  • It’s really hard to resist sparkly baubles around the holidays, but there are incredible deals if you take the time to search for them. I purchased the Lulu Frost bangle and Melanie Auld ring for under $30 each.

Are you curating the French Wardrobe? Post your progress and let me know. I’ll share a link to your post here. If that’s not really your speed, I’d still love to share posts about your budget struggles and successes in this space!

Behind the Baubles: Anna Beck

Becky Hosmer’s love of jewelry started back in college when she had the opportunity to explore the globe, but it was her time in Bali that led to the Anna Beck collection. She was struck by the intricate metalwork techniques that appeared both ancient and modern. Working alongside a Balinese artisan, she began designing her own pieces and eventually launched her collection in 2003. All of her pieces are still handmade in Bali and leave me yearning to jetset to a far-flung, tropical destination.

Becky is offering B&B readers a 20% discount through Jan. 1 with code ABHoliday. Let me know if you treat yourself!

Bauble of the Week

December 15, 2013 by jessica Leave a Comment

It’s not often that I’m completely gobsmacked by a piece of jewelry, but just look at these earrings! The moonstone cabochons and diamond pave circles look just like fizzy champagne bubbles. Cheers!

Style Staple: Menswear Watches

December 13, 2013 by jessica Leave a Comment

Just a few years ago, a menswear watch was one of the most sought-after trends. (I’m looking at you, Michael Kors.) Now, I think it’s safe to say that the oversize design is officially a classic style staple—and an incredibly practical one at that!

There are plenty of versions made specifically for ladies, but don’t dismiss the men’s options like the Victorinox watches found at Watch Warehouse. Simply swapping or resizing the band gives you even more variety on your search for the perfect menswear-inspired watch.

1. Michael Kors, $120 // 2. Victorinox, £415 // 3. Movado, $595 // 4. Kate Spade, $169 // 5. Nixon, $200

We’re pretty serious about traveling to Europe next year—so much so that we decided against an affordable getaway to Puerto Rico at the end of January to save money. Unfortunately, that only works if I’m not tempted by the beauties above. (The loafers! Sigh!) One thing I do need, however, is a structured tote similar to the Armani bags at Diffusion Online. I haven’t decided on a color, but I like the shape of the bag above. Let me know if you come across any nice leather totes in the coming months. Bonus points if it has an option for a cross-body strap.

1. Armani, £179.00 // 2. Tory Burch, $285 // 3. Lulu & Georgia, $95// 4. J.Crew, $126 // 5. Tibi, $250 // 6. Cin Cin, $10 // 7. Kate Spade, $58 // 8. Tinley Road, $38 // 9. Target, $6

This is a PR collaboration, but all opinions are my own. Thanks for supporting the brands that support Bedknobs & Baubles!

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
