On the Right Foot: Paczki for Fat Tuesday, A Rattan Fruit Bowl, A Home Renovation With Preservation in Mind & More!

March 3, 2025 by jessica Leave a Comment

Recent Snapshots: the best iced orange latte with oat milk from Ledger; brownies from the Dessert Person cookbook on one of my new East Fork pottery bowls in Big Sky; Lily keeping warm next to the air vent under the bathroom sink; date night at Lallande.

A poet’s guide to Venice in the winter.

The history of eating paczki on Fat Tuesday.

A renovation that preserved this home’s historic and relaxed charm.

Rounding up recent purchases here and here.

I forgot to add another recent item to the latest “Notable Purchases” post: this $25 solar lamp. Such a great midcentury-inspired design. I bought it in black because it hides the solar panel and charging port the best.

I finally watched Martha, the Netflix documentary about Martha Stewart. Perfection.

I’ll be snapping up this necklace the moment it’s available.

Recapping the 48 hours we spent in York, England last fall.

The most iconic chairs in design.

Meet the person who makes the red carpet.

A rattan fruit bowl to add texture to your table or a bookshelf.

Enjoy your week!

On the Right Foot: NYE Cocktails, Where to Travel in 2025, Silver Ballet Flats & More!

December 30, 2024 by jessica Leave a Comment

Above: A snapshot from our May 2024 trip to Barcelona. I promise that a travel guide is coming in the new year!

A few roundups for you to peruse: a list of my most recent notable purchases and my favorite products I bought in 2024.

The most beautiful places in France.

Out of the one billion packages that entered the U.S. in 2022, apparently one-third came from Shein and Temu. Let’s all resolve to spend our money more thoughtfully as we enter the new year.

18 New Year’s Eve cocktails that are worth staying awake for.

Silver ballet flats are very tempting now that they’re on sale.

How to make New Year’s resolutions that stick.

Where to travel in 2025.

I adore the idea of decorating a Christmas tree with only icicle ornaments. (This could never be my main Christmas tree — I love multi colored lights and ornaments too much — but would be lovely on a small tabletop tree.)

A couple of my favorite Christmas gifts: a beautiful leather work tote and gorgeous wine glasses.

Such a cheerful, colorful home!

Happy New Year!

On the Right Foot: Custom Cocktail Napkins, Extend the Life of Your Sweaters, Martha Stewart’s Unfiltered Thoughts on Her Documentary & More!

November 4, 2024 by jessica Leave a Comment

Above: a snapshot from our recent trip to York, England. I’ll post a travel diary soon!

Election Day is tomorrow! If you have any questions about voting, visit Vote.org.

This updated Billy bookcase is my favorite IKEA hack to date.

I enjoyed this interview with John Oliver.

Madewell’s popular flat now comes in a beautiful forest green hue.

Last month’s notable purchases can only be described as an overindulgence in barn jackets.

East Fork’s new glaze, “In the Pines,” is perfect for the upcoming holiday season.

Martha Stewart has scathing comments about her new documentary. (I just love her sass!)

I’m planning to make these garlic bread biscuits for our upcoming Friendsgiving celebration.

How to extend the life of your sweaters.

Now through mid-December, I plan to include a weekly gift pick in this weekly roundup. This week’s gift pick: custom embroidered cocktail napkins. How fabulous would these be for your mixologist friend?!

On the Right Foot: United Expands Its International Routes, 12 Turkey Recipes, Wisconsin’s Favorite Cocktail & More

October 21, 2024 by jessica Leave a Comment

Above: I finally saw the Northern lights for the first time!

Declassified army photos from the ’70s and ’80s that look like they could be plucked from high fashion today. (Just scroll down to the section with the hats and ear coverings!)

There’s still time to order Halloween decorations.

Loving the tile work in this home.

An ode to Wisconsin’s favorite cocktail.

United is expanding its international routes to cities that are typically more difficult to travel to.

My most recent purchases. (I’ve been living in that grey sweater!)

Plus, a roundup of covetable finds.

I saw these tin star ornaments on the Schoolhouse site last week, and I’m pretty sure they’re sourced from this Canadian factory. They’re cheaper on the Pietersma Tinworks site, even after shipping fees. You can also find the tin icicle ornaments that Schoolhouse also carries. They’re wonderful for filling in gaps on the Christmas tree and reflecting light.

Thanksgiving will be here before we know it. If you’re cooking a turkey, here are 12 recipes to consider.

Investigating Italian Renaissance paintings to rediscover long-forgotten fruit.

A list of perennials you should cut back in the fall.

Enjoy your week!

Life Lately & On the Right Foot

September 2, 2024 by jessica Leave a Comment

While I’m a little sad that summer is coming to its unofficial end, I’m looking forward to fewer social obligations on my agenda. For months, we’ve had plans nearly every week night and weekend making it difficult to make time for hobbies like pottery, gardening, and the blog. But it really was a lovely summer as evidenced by the snapshots above: from summer nights playing bocce to participating in my first wood kiln to evenings on the Capitol lawn for the orchestra’s annual summer concert series to making zucchini bars. For now, though, I’m looking forward to getting back in a routine — starting with the weekly roundup of notable links:

Here’s the recipe I used to make zucchini bars. I put more cream cheese in the frosting and adjusted to taste.

The definitive guide to Chicago restaurants featured on The Bear.

A home tour with a slide installed next to the stairs — it’s a child’s dream!

The latest social media trend? “Underconsumption Core.”

…and if you want to try giving the underconsumption trend a whirl, here are tips for shopping less from people who love to shop.

If you need a clear purse for this fall’s sporting events, this is one of the better-looking options. I bought it in white.

The best coffee shops in London.

Sharing my favorite purchases of last month.

This product allows you to turn your candle holders into bud vases.

Seriously considering these Mary Jane flats in the “spiced camel” velvet.

Some travel inspiration if you’re looking to book an autumn trip abroad.

I’m tempted to order this retro-inspired lamp with the birch base, especially since it’s on sale with an extra 20% off.

Rumor has it that there might be a Ted Lasso season four.

Happy Labor Day!

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
