Windy City

Chicago-6

We’re back from our weekend jaunt to Chicago! Between the festive decorations throughout the city and shopping at the Christkindlmarket, our visit to the city was the perfect way to kick off the holiday season before returning to Wisconsin’s winter wonderland last night. One of my favorite stops was at Three Dots and a Dash, an oasis topping countless lists of best American tiki bars. While tiki drinks get a bad rap for being overly sweet, the concoctions at Three Dots and a Dash are well-balanced with fresh fruit flavors and meticulously garnished. (My daiquiri came with a banana fashioned into a dolphin.) I was so enamored with the place that I had to buy the glasses our first two drinks came in. The rest of our trip was spent wandering the city, visiting the zoo and contemporary art museum, standing 1,353 feet above Chicago at the Willis Tower, cozying up in bars, and watching the holiday parade. We didn’t do much shopping, other than a stop at Uniqlo where I purchased a couple of merino v-neck sweaters (they’re inexpensive and hold their shape) and the most ridiculous furry earmuffs.

London Calling

Tory-Buch-Coat-7

When I purchase a new item, I know it’s a keeper when I start daydreaming about the places I want to wear it. I’m not talking about everyday locations, like work, or even special occasions, like a wedding. Instead, I find myself itching to book a plane ticket to debut the piece in a different city or country. This coat is destined for London, which isn’t a surprise given that Tory Burch’s inspiration for her 2015 pre-fall collection was the English city circa 1960. Nestled next to the coat in my suitcase would be the ultra comfortable Naturalizer “Jarrett” ankle boots. You already know how much I love flats, but sometimes a standard-issue ballet flat seems a little dull. These ankle boots have just enough attitude to make an outfit more interesting without sacrificing comfort. They run a hair large, which I didn’t mind. I’ll appreciate the extra room for tights and cozy socks once the mercury dips.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.

While it claims to be the most haunted place in Europe and is dubbed the city of a thousand ghosts, we only encountered the wire-mesh sculptures of Ghosts in the Gardens (@the_york_bid) and the family of souvenir ghosts I brought home from @yorkghostmerchants.
