Season of Giving With Garnet Hill

Season of Giving with Garnet Hill

I’ve been a long time partner and fan of Garnet Hill, and I’m so excited to share the details of their latest promotion with you. Now through December 24, you can show your holiday spirit by sharing a photo of a beautifully wrapped gift and Garnet Hill will donate $10 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for a total donation of up to $15,000. Take part by uploading your photo to Garnet Hill’s website or posting on Instagram with the tag #StJudeShareAGift. And, as a special thank you for helping them reach their goal, you’ll be entered to win one of their luxurious cashmere wraps! (You may remember that I featured one of their cashmere wraps earlier this year. It would make the best last-minute Christmas gift for someone special on your shopping list! I especially love mine for traveling. If you order by the end of the day on Dec. 20, you’ll only need to pony up another $9.95 for two-day shipping to have it in time.)

Holiday Gift Guide for the Homebody

Holiday Gift Guide for the Homebody

If you’re anything like me, you’ve barely started your holiday shopping. I’ve picked up a few things here and there, but shipping deadlines are looming and I’m starting to feel the pressure to check off the last people on my list. In an effort to motivate myself, I’m dedicating this week to gift guides and hopefully it’ll help you wrap up your shopping list, too!

Wool Blanket – I know that inexpensive acrylic throw blankets are tempting, but the best blankets are the ones that withstand the test of time both in terms of quality and aesthetics. This buffalo plaid wool blanket is made by Faribault Woolen Mill Co. in Minnesota. The quality is exceptional, making it one of those items that the recipient will keep for decades, and the checked design works with everything from traditional decor to more contemporary designs. I bought one for myself earlier this year and I can’t tell you how much I love snuggling up with it on chilly nights.

Plant Mister – I was never one for houseplants until we bought our home and now I can’t get enough of them. I’m most successful at raising succulents because of their low-maintenance preferences! One of the items I’d love to own if I ever add any humidity-loving plants to my collection is a brass plant mister. Not only is it practical, it’s a sculptural piece that looks pretty perched on a bookshelf. (You’ll notice that whenever I spot a gift idea that’s both pretty and practical, it’s a win in my book.)

Candle Sticks – Candle sticks are one of those things people love to own, but rarely think to buy for themselves. That’s exactly why they’re a great holiday gift. I love this chic matte black set. Add in a set of white taper candles and you’ve got yourself an incredible gift for the hygge-loving friend on  your list. If your giftee is more on the glam side with her decor, consider this brass set. I have them and they look more expensive than the $40 price tag suggests.

Stoneware Mugs – These totally look like they were scooped up at a pottery shop in a small tourist town (and if you’re near one of those said boutiques, definitely opt for the local version).

Pajamas – These might be on the sexier side of what you’d normally gift someone during the holidays, but they look so good in my guide! Kidding aside, pajamas are a thoughtful gift for someone who looks forward to curling up at home on the weekends. Most people, myself included, neglect updating our pajama drawers and it’s a welcome surprise when someone else does it for us! Avoid flannel sets with seasonal designs and opt for something classic and sophisticated to ensure it gets yearlong use.

Candle – Candles are perfect for someone you don’t know very well, which is likely why they get such a bad rap for being impersonal. However, this small-batch soy candle won’t disappoint thanks to its beautiful packaging.

Silk Eyemask – Indulge your giftee with a silk eyemask. I have an inexpensive one from Amazon, which is fine, but I’d love to own this luxurious cult favorite. It comes in eight colors, including black and charcoal which are great for men, too!

Turntable – I know people are into those Crosley record players; they’re Instagram worthy and wallet friendly. However, they’re not the best for actual music quality and taking care of your vinyl. If there’s an audiophile on your list, it’s worth investing in a turntable from U-Turn. The price for the turntable starts at $289 and the price goes up based on your selections. There’s also a basic model that starts at $179. Dave actually picked it out for us, so it has the male stamp of approval for gift giving this season!

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
