D.C. Day 1

Floral-Dress-and-Sneakers-1v2

We’re back from our mini getaway to Washington, D.C.! As always, the trip felt too short, but we still managed to pack in a lot of sightseeing: the National Building Museum, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Gallery of Art, shopping in Georgetown, a Nationals baseball game, the Supreme Court, the National Zoo, Embassy Row (our hotel was in the thick of it), and the Library of Congress. Whew! The Metro was undergoing maintenance, which led to long delays on many of the lines. We ended up walking most places (or taking an Uber when the heat and humidity were making us delirious), so let’s just say I’m looking forward to a day at the office to let my feet recover!

Road Trippin’

Lilly-Pulitzer-Elsa-Tunic---4

I talk about this Lilly Pulitzer “Elsa” tunic every summer, but that’s because it really is the best thing to wear for a summer road trip. The silk is lightweight and breathable, and sleeves offer enough sun protection to keep you from getting fried. I’ve had this top for almost three years now and I go back to it time and time again. In fact, I think it’s been with me for every vacation since I bought it! I purchased another Elsa tunic when we visited Palm Beach earlier this year. It’s an obnoxious bright pink that I don’t wear nearly as often as this one. I still love it, but I think another blue tunic is in order. It’s a tossup between the peacock-esque scallops on this one and this bamboo-inspired print.

In completely unrelated news, Tory Burch’s private sale started today and runs through Aug. 14. Shop it here.

Sunflowers-4

Dave hates this dress. So do the ladies at GOMI. Whatever. We all know it’s the perfect thing to wear to a sunflower field. It’s a little bit country in the very best way. It’s also a knockoff of an AG x Alexa Chung dress from earlier this year (see the latest from that collection here). A version of the dress is still available at Chicwish, but purchase at your own risk. I collaborated with them once and the item was such bad quality that I wouldn’t post it on the blog. Maybe they’ve gotten better?

If you’re in the Madison area, head out to the Pope Farm Conservancy to see nine acres of sunflowers in bloom for the next few days. There’s a daily sunflower update on their website to consult before making the trip.

ASTR-Floral-Dress-5

When sneakers were popular last year, I didn’t think I would be able to pull off wearing them with dresses. Well, thank goodness for a broken foot to push me out of my sartorial comfort zone because I kind of adore the dressy-meets-casual combination. It’s an effortless weekend look that can go from the farmers’ market to an afternoon walk through the botanical garden and then out for evening drinks. That said, I’m still counting down the days (14!) until I can kick off my sneakers and slip back into sandals!

Blue Tips

July 27, 2015 by jessica 11 Comments

Dee-Elle-Smocked-Swing-Dress-2

Over the weekend, we headed south to Louisville. We had visited the city twice before and checked off the major sights, so a quick weekend trip was just enough time to visit our favorite haunts, explore local boutiques (I bought an opalescent and brass vase from Scout), try out new bars (Meta had the best craft cocktails), and new-to-us restaurants. It was also my first full weekend without the boot since May! I felt pretty sassy in my Jack Purcell sneakers after a 21c hotel employee told me I had “nice blue tips.”

This dress was a $29 sale find at Nordstrom and it was perfect for the steamy weather in Kentucky. It’s lightweight, fairly breathable, and didn’t wrinkle in my travel bag. The lining is a bit smaller than the overlay, so you’re not at risk of revealing too much in a light breeze. I heeded the advice to size up.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
