Love It

As much as I appreciate the boost of confidence from a pair of heels, I’m a flats girl through and through. I love the versatility of flats, the mobility of flats, and the Audrey Hepburn je ne sais quoi of flats. I think we can all agree that this pair from Sam Edelman has that ladylike-meets-irreverent vibe down.

I purchased them after my love affair with the Tory Burch wedges fizzled and, like all tales starring a pair of shoes, there was a happy ending. The Sam Edelman flats are true to size and the nude-colored ankle strap doesn’t visually cut me off like the black strap did on the Tory pair. Now I just “need” these bow-topped mint flats and a palm-printed pair to make my spring shoe wardrobe complete.

The Verdict is In

I had fantasized about these shoes since I first saw them on the Tory Burch website and had a laundry list of items I could wear them with: that elusive white summer dress, white shorts and a blouse, black cigarette pants and a cozy cashmere sweater…

So, you can imagine how disappointed I am to send them back to Shopbop. I purchased my normal size 7 after reading numerous “true to size” fit recommendations only to find that they’re huge. (I kept checking the box to make sure that they sent the right pair.) I wrestled with ordering them again in a 6 and a 6.5 to see if either of those would work, but if I’m being honest, they’re not worth $300. I’ll give it another shot if they go on sale for 40% off (maybe I’ll even go for the striped pair). Until then, I ordered these. Apparently I’m just itching for a pointed toe and an ankle strap.

Onecklace Review

I’m a pretty firm believer that if you wore a trend the first time it was popular, you should probably stay away from it the second time around. It’s why I’ve been hesitant to wear a nameplate necklace again. No, I didn’t wear one when Carrie Bradshaw made it popular. I wore one when I was seven years old. I found the little 14” necklace when I was packing up my childhood bedroom and, with all sentimental pieces, I tucked it away for safekeeping.

When oNecklace asked if I’d be interested in featuring one of their name necklaces, I couldn’t bring myself to wear my first name on my collarbone again. Instead, I opted for a cheeky “Bonjour” necklace in the Alegro script.

Review: LeeMo Designs

Confession time: one of my biggest fears is that the aging process will punish me for wearing doorknocker-size earrings. I really, really do not want to be an old lady with saggy earlobes.* Neither does Leela Morimoto of LeeMo Designs. Her collection of lightweight earrings is fashioned from origami and lasercut acrylic to create beautiful statement pieces without the heft.

I fell in love with the clear acrylic Oridama earrings. Doesn’t it look like the crystallized pattern of frost on a windowpane?

Check back later this week to go “Behind the Baubles” with Leela and a chance to win a pair of diamond-shaped origami Ayano earrings. (I’m fond of the blue and white pair.)

*Instead, I really, really want to grow up to be like Iris Apfel. Have you seen her HSN line?

A huge thank you to Leela for sending over the earrings!

All in the Details

Let’s just preface this by saying that I don’t really encourage shopping at Forever21 and I know d’orsay flats aren’t for everyone,* but I had to see these shoes in person after spotting them online.

Utterly and completely smitten.

I’ve actually admired Jenni Kayne’s version for awhile, but thought the style was too trendy to spend a lot of cash on. Sorry, Jenni, $26 is more my speed. The bedazzling is just icing on the sartorial cake.

I wore them on Saturday and, as with any cheap shoe, I was bracing myself for the worst: painful blisters and unsightly dye transfer. Neither of which happened. They stretched out just a tad throughout the day, so I’d recommend sizing down if you’re a half size. Otherwise, your regular size is best. There’s a little piece of elastic sewn into the inside of the heel to prevent it from slipping.

*The misplaced hatred of d’orsay flats, by the way, is ridiculous. Those clunky high top sneakers are much worse.

Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
