15 Fun Finds for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is going to look a bit different this year with families opting to forgo large celebrations in favor of small gatherings with just those in their own households. While you may be sad about missing out on cherished traditions, it doesn’t mean you can’t make the day special. I rounded up 15 fun finds for Thanksgiving, below, to make this year’s holiday memorable. (And be sure to order early since shipping is expected to take longer this holiday season!)

  1. If you’ve wanted to try gold flatware, now’s the time! Especially when there’s an affordable set with service for four.
  2. Vintage-inspired glasses in a great autumnal hue.
  3. I just purchased this linen tablecloth for our Thanksgiving table. It comes in at under $30 no matter what size you need!
  4. This inexpensive gravy boat has a beautiful shape.
  5. I love the black rim on these classic appetizer plates.
  6. A set of small, versatile bowls. Use them to serve appetizer-sized portions of soup, set out dips, or to corral nuts and jams accompanying your cheese board.
  7. Save yourself the trouble of making your own turkey brine and pick up a jarred one.
  8. This sweater is a perennial favorite of mine. It’s incredibly soft with a flattering relaxed fit, making it perfect for Thanksgiving. There’s a striped version, too!
  9. A set of taper holders in various heights makes decorating the table a breeze.
  10. I have this platter and it’s great because its simple design coordinates with just about any decor.
  11. Clearly these earrings aren’t just for the holiday, but their chunky shape would look beautiful with sweaters all season long and they’re not too fussy to wear while you’re cooking.
  12. Cloth napkins in a striking, yet classic windowpane design.
  13. My favorite coasters continue to get better with age. I’m probably going to order a second set.
  14. An elegant, heirloom-quality carving set.
  15. Finish the meal with a slice of pie, presented with a vintage server.

On the Right Foot: Sunglasses to Buy Now, a Stain Removal Guide, How to Destress & More!

November 9, 2020 by jessica Leave a Comment

First off, ohmygod, Biden won! I couldn’t be happier about the results of the election, especially knowing that Kamala Harris will be an inspiration to girls and women everywhere.

I had this pair of sunglasses on my wish list for weeks now and finally pulled the trigger. They’re gorgeous! The solid warm brown is more interesting than a traditional tortoiseshell.

We started watching The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix. So. Good.

A multi-sensory Vincent van Gogh exhibit is coming to the U.S. I hope it becomes safer to travel soon because I’d love to see this one.

The prettiest coupes.

How to remove every type of stain.

This green-on-green kitchen is everything.

It’s just going to be the two of us on Thanksgiving and I’m already starting to plan the menu so the day feels special. I think these pull-apart sour cream and chive rolls will make the cut.

Ten simple things to do when you’re feeling stressed.

Great gift idea: a set of beautiful espresso mugs for your caffeine-fueled friend.

In case you missed it:

  • Everything I bought and loved in October.
  • Oliver is doing so well on kitty Prozac!

Things I Bought and Loved in October

IN THE WARDROBE
See all of this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • J.Crew perfect rain jacket in dark moss – This is a great basic to have on hand for fall and eventually spring. The cinched waist gives it shape and there’s enough room around the hips for curvier girls. I went with a medium and there’s plenty of room for a sweater underneath.
  • J.Crew camp socks – I love these cozy socks for chilly days at home. They now have striped ones, too!
  • Gap cozy scarf in black check – This is such a pretty, soft scarf and I love the classic print.
  • Old Navy flannel pajama shorts in buffalo check – These fit as you’d expect and run true to size. For actual pajamas, I prefer short and tank sets from Soma’s “Cool Nights” collection, but I’m all about cheap pajama shorts for lounging on the couch.
  • Old Navy loose sweater-knit crop hoodie in gray heather – This was a surprise hit! I added this sweater-sweatshirt hybrid to my order to reach the free shipping threshold with the other items in the order. I figured it’d be a decent enough loungewear piece, but didn’t think it’d be as great as it is. I love the cropped, boxy shape with “pandemic pants” and it’s so darn soft. I bought a medium, but you could easily go down a size for a more fitted look.
  • LOFT floral shirred yoke blouse – There’s a shocking amount of hate for this blouse in the review section! It’s a gauzy fabric, which wasn’t what I expected, but I do like it. I went with a medium. It’s oversized, but drapes well without being bulky. I think it’s the perfect Thanksgiving blouse that gives you plenty of room without being clingy.
  • The Drop x Grace Atwood loose-fit dress – In full disclosure, I’m on the fence about keeping this. It was a bit expensive for quality that’s akin to a Target dress and I don’t love it with fall accessories or sneakers. However, I do love it with my Birks (in cognac) and summery jewelry. I might keep it for those reasons alone and hope that COVID-19 eases up enough in 2021 where we can go on a warm-weather trip earlier in the year.

AROUND THE HOUSE

  • Norwell Lighting schoolhouse semi-flushmount in polished nickel with the stepped opal shade – We replaced the old fluorescent light in our bathroom with this schoolhouse-inspired option. The stepped shade makes it a bit more unique than the standard shades that come with schoolhouse fixtures. It’s a good quality at that price point.
  • Hearth & Hand bathroom hook in black – After we did our bathroom refresh and replaced the cabinet knobs on the linen closet near the shower, our towels no longer stayed put when draped on the new knobs. So, a hook was in order. I found this one at Target and it’s so good! It’s sturdy and has a nice weight to it.
  • House of Antique Hardware mushroom glass cabinet knob in black – House of Antique Hardware always comes through when I’m looking for a vintage-inspired or replica replacement. These knobs are adorable for our bathroom linen closet. I actually ordered a pair in white, too, but loved the black ones more in our bathroom.
  • Threshold soap dispenser – I don’t have much to say about this, but it’s pretty and classic, and I thought I’d draw your attention to it if you’re looking for a new soap dispenser.
  • Tramp Ceramics almond bowl – Sara Tramp, former member of the Emily Henderson blog team, launched her online ceramic shop recently. She has such pretty pieces at an affordable price point! Follow the shop’s Instagram for updates.

On the Right Foot: History of Mirrors, Dressing for Ourselves, the Jacket to Buy at 50% Off & More!

October 26, 2020 by jessica Leave a Comment

Link Roundup

This house tour is further proof that neutrals can be just as arresting as vibrant color, especially when there are layered textures and varying tones.

Sara Tramp, former member of the Emily Henderson blog team, launched her online ceramic shop over the weekend. Everything sold out almost immediately, but as fate would have, my favorite piece was somehow still available and I ordered it immediately. Follow the shop’s Instagram for updates.

This column gets to the heart of why I just can’t get on board with Get Organized with The Home Edit.

In isolation, we’re finally dressing for ourselves.

I’m thrilled that this faux potted pine is back at CB2. I bought it last year and it quickly became one of my favorite holiday decorations.

The refusal to wear facemasks isn’t the first time male ideology has affected public health.

I just purchased this lightweight jacket in dark moss and it’s a lot cuter than I expected it to be and it’s 50% off right now! The cinched waist gives it much-needed shape and there’s enough room around the hips for curvier girls. We have limited days left to wear it in Wisconsin this year, but it’ll be great for spring!

Our selfie-obsessed culture began centuries ago with the mirror.

I’m working at home through the end of the year, which necessitates cute swing dresses for Zoom meetings. I love this cheetah-print one.

Election Day is next week! Please vote early if you’re able to do so and preferably for Biden!

In case you missed it:

  • How to remove paint from antique hardware.
  • The bedroom that’s inspiring this month’s The Coveted.
  • Do you remember when our bedroom had a hole in the wall to the adjoining room? Here’s how we fixed it.

I’ve had my eye on these graphic earrings for awhile and now they’re even more tempting at $50.

This drink table is perfect for small spaces when you need a place to perch a cocktail. Plus, it doubles as a plant stand!

Phone nooks don’t get the attention they deserve Phone nooks don’t get the attention they deserve. They’re practically begging to be used as built-in displays for ceramics!

(I removed the phone jack, pulled the wires back through the hole, and patched it up, so it’s no longer functional for a landline. I assume a future owner won’t miss it either!)

I can’t believe we’re celebrating our fourth C I can’t believe we’re celebrating our fourth Christmas in the house! I’ve taken a version of this photo each Christmas to serve as a timeline of the small changes over the years. One thing never changes, though: I think our Christmas tree is the prettiest. 😊 I hope you have a wonderful holiday in however you’re able to celebrate this year. 2020 has been difficult, but we’re in the home stretch now! Sending lots of love your way!

As my holiday gift to you, enjoy my favorite famil As my holiday gift to you, enjoy my favorite family cookie recipe now on the blog! (Find it via the link-in-profile or search for "sugar cookie.”) It never feels like Christmas until I’ve had my mom’s sugar cookies. In a typical year (or even an atypical one like 2020!), I’ll spend a couple of days working on these — baking them the first and decorating them the second — and it immediately puts me in the holiday spirit. Not only are these nostalgic for me as she’s been making them my entire life (there’s even a photo of me, no older than 2 years old, sitting at the kitchen table “helping” with them), they’re hands-down the best sugar cookies I have ever had. And plenty of people agree with not-so-subtle hints to make them each year.

It never really feels like the holiday season unti It never really feels like the holiday season until I’ve made sugar cookies with my mom’s decades old recipe — and until I’ve risked a food-borne illness by snacking on raw dough. I shirked the holiday tradition last year after having been too busy with holiday travel (ten days in Belgium and a long weekend in Chicago left me too busy with other holiday to-dos), but there’s zero excuse to put off baking this year. #AlwaysHome #QuarantineForever
Buffalo plaid packages tied up with string ... the Buffalo plaid packages tied up with string ... these are a few of my favorite things. 🎶 (I don't think Julie Andrews would mind tweaking the lyrics a little bit, right? 😉)

Pro tip: Instead of looking at the gift-wrap section for things to decorate your presents, hit up your local craft store. I bought a package of 75 jingle bells, a dozen mini bottlebrush trees, and twine in seasonal colors for just a couple of dollars each. (The wrapping paper is from Target.)
