Postcards | Ghent

September 18, 2014 by jessica 6 Comments

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]T[/dropcap]he day after we visited Bruges, we went to Ghent, another medieval city in the Flanders area of Belgium. It still has the same gothic charm as Bruges, but with the hustle and bustle of a real city with people who aren’t tourists. It’s also much bigger and we didn’t anticipate the walk from the train station to be as long as it was. (Definitely take a bus or tram to the city center if you visit.)

We spent most of the afternoon poking around the canal and side streets, but did manage to check off two cultural must-sees:

  • Belfort en Lakenhalle: This is the building in the last photo of this post. We went up to balcony under the clock for fantastic views of the city. Inside you’ll see the historic dragon weather vane and, if you’re a beer drinker, you’ll recognize it from the Gulden Draak label. Learn more about the building’s cultural importance here.
  • Sint-Baafskathedraal: Inside this elaborate cathedral is perhaps one of the world’s most influential paintings: The Ghent Altarpiece. Commonly known as Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, the work by van Eyck also has the misfortune of being one of the world’s most stolen pieces of art. (A panel is still missing from a 1934 heist.) I urge you to read about its storied–and fascinating–history here.

Review | Lo & Sons

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]F[/dropcap]inding the perfect personal bag for in-flight essentials is a daunting task that leaves me feeling a bit like Goldilocks. There are plenty of bags that are too big, too small, too heavy, or too cumbersome, but not many that are just right–which I quickly learned after opting to use an L.L. Bean tote for our trip to Belgium. I spent half the flight checking and double checking to make sure nothing spilled over the open top and it was surprisingly heavy to carry through the airport. My next flight is going to much less stressful, thanks to the O.M.G. bag from Lo & Sons.

The O.M.G., an acronym for “Overnight Medium Gym” bag, is incredibly lightweight, water resistant, and has plenty of pockets for travel must-haves, including a padded laptop sleeve and a side pocket for your flats so the rest of your items don’t get dirty. I tend to be a light packer, but all of the items below fit inside with plenty of room for my camera, lenses, and a cribbage board (can’t leave home without it!).

Review | Leatherology

September 15, 2014 by jessica 12 Comments

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]I[/dropcap]f you’re following along on Instagram, you’ve already had a sneak peek of the surprise Leatherology sent over. As you may remember, I featured the brand in this post and admitted that I didn’t know much about the new-to-me leather goods company. As it turns out, the company was founded in 2008 with one goal in mind: to create the perfect men’s wallet. After mastering the billfold, the company expanded its leather offerings to a wide range of high quality personal and travel accessories, without an exorbitant price tag.

I received the deluxe luggage tag and an adorable key cover. Each item is crafted with supple leather that feels like it will hold up over the years and monogrammed with debossed letters (much better than initials that are just painted on). The brand’s attention to detail is also reflected in its thoughtful packaging, as you’ll see below.

Bauble of the Week

September 14, 2014 by jessica 1 Comment

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]I[/dropcap]still have photos to share from Brussels, Ghent, and Amsterdam and reviews of three great getaway products, so I’m devoting this week to travel posts. And, what better way to get in the wanderlust spirit than with a pair of tropical earrings from Tory Burch’s spring 2015 runway show? The sculptural design captures the monkey’s playful spirit without sacrificing elegance. They’re now available for pre-order with an estimated ship date of Feb. 2015.

Currently Coveting

ONE | TWO | THREE | FOUR | FIVE

Now that the iPhone 6 has been released–and retailers will soon switch to manufacturing phone cases for the new version–I’m on the lookout for a new case to hold me over until I make a phone upgrade (which probably won’t happen next year). The Tory Burch case I featured last week is a top contender. Cusp sent over a coupon for $25 off a purchase of $50 or more after purchasing the Ted Baker skirt. At least that would bring the price down to something more reasonable.

I may have found a new wallet already (it’s on my fall must-have list). This Coach wallet is small, sleek and ultra practical. It comes in a couple of bright colors, but I like the neutral option best. However, I really would have preferred it in black.

I’m also crushing on this sultry nail color for autumn.

It’s so nice to be home after a whirlwind week. It’s so nice to be home after a whirlwind week. We flew out to Philadelphia last Friday for a few days of exploring. It was our first time in the City of Brotherly Love and we loved every minute of it from the architecture to the restaurants, and most of all: the welcoming and friendly people. After that, we had one night at home before a flight to Denver to celebrate my cousin’s wedding. We got back to Madison late last night and have spent the day puttering around the house, getting caught up on laundry, grocery shopping, harvesting the season’s first tomatoes from the garden, and admiring just how much the hydrangeas have grown in the course of a week.
I always get a kick out of comparing views of our I always get a kick out of comparing views of our home today to the photos I took during our home inspection. (Swipe to see our main bedroom then!) While I knew the house had potential, it was hard to look past some of the owner’s “design” choices. Though, it looks like the room was destined to have a warm-toned quilt. 😂

P.S. @schoolhouse just released new colors of their popular Stillwater Floral Quilt!

And, for those interested, I’ve linked my bedroom items here: https://liketk.it/5iC8R

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
