CURRENTLY COVETING

August 14, 2014 by jessica Leave a Comment

ONE | TWO | THREE | FOUR | FIVE | SIX | SEVEN

For me, this summer was all about loose, comfortable pieces. I’m anxious for a return to ladylike silhouettes this fall, starting with this dark floral skirt. It’s at the top of my fall shopping list. What’s topping your must-have list?

I actually own the DVF clutch above and it’s one of my closet staples. It’s sophisticated and versatile, but there are other colors available if you’re not on the market for a black clutch.

Have you had a chance to shop the Tory Burch private sale? There’s not a lot left, but there are still great pieces in the regular sale section on the site. I love this pretty blue dress and this ’60s-inspired swingy top.

SALE AWAY

One of the biggest perks to living in Madison is visiting Bop, Shopbop’s original—and only—brick and mortar store, during Maxwell Street Days. The sales include online returns that have been worn, are in need of repair or items the retailer decided not to stock. This year, I bought a pair of turquoise Ferragamo Varina flats for $200 (see them here). The bottoms were scuffed and there’s a small smudge on the bow, but everything else is in great condition. (And if we’re being honest, the small imperfections make me less nervous to wear them.) I also found this dress for $20, which I suspect is because of the tiniest, almost imperceptible black pen spot on one of the white stripes. It was an easy piece to wear on one of the warmest days in Brussels.

I do prefer the dress with a pair of black heels (not happening on cobblestones) or pointed flats, but my feet were so swollen on this trip that I could only wear these sandals. Every. Single. Day. (It’s really a shame the other shoes I brought didn’t make an appearance. It was a lot of wasted suitcase space that could have been used to bring back more Delftware…)

BEHIND THE BAUBLES: KAROLINE BOLT

August 12, 2014 by jessica Leave a Comment

Heavily influenced by the shapes in Art Deco architecture, Karoline Bolt launched her namesake brand of covetable gems just this year. As a child, Karoline and her sisters would play dress up with their grandmother’s heirlooms and you’ll see that sentiment reflected in her jewelry: each piece is named after a family member and each piece repurposes items from the past with recycled metals. She uses locally sourced opals, turquoise and onyx set in either sterling silver, gold-plated brass or 14k gold, giving you an array of options—and price points—to find the perfect piece.

NEUTRAL ZONE

August 11, 2014 by jessica Leave a Comment

After countless hours of travel, a 90-minute nap and one quick shower, I slipped this on for our first evening exploring Belgium. I was absolutely exhausted and elastic-waist shorts with a slouchy sweater is about as close to pajamas as you can get.

Ladies have been waxing poetic about these shorts since they were released and I promise that they’re as good as everyone says they are. Plus, you can go down a size. (Keep in mind that they’re pretty delicate. Wash them on the gentle cycle in a lingerie bag and line dry.)

HOME, SWEET HOME

We’re back from our Belgian getaway! We did so much in such a short amount of time that I need a few days to take it all in and flip through 2,000 trip photos with Dave privately before publishing any online! Let me know if you’re wondering about anything in particular. I’m penning an email to a reader with some of my must-sees and advice. I’ll relay the info in a post along with any other things you’re curious about.

I also want to thank all of the ladies who submitted guest posts while I was gone. I’m grateful—and humbled—by your willingness to help out!

I’m going to be MIA from the Internet for the rest of the week enjoying time at home with the cat and imbibing at the Great Taste of the Midwest (as if we needed more beer…). I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and I’ll see you Monday! xoxo

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
