Loving Lately

January 20, 2014 by jessica Leave a Comment

Lately, I’m loving:

  • A fresh bouquet of tulips from the grocery store. They’re my favorite flower and it seems like ages since they’ve been available. Spring must be right around the corner!
  • The Tory Burch shoes I panic purchased. They were starting to sell out in a size 7 at other retailers and I couldn’t risk letting them go. They’re scheduled to arrive today.
  • Delving deeper into research for a Belgian getaway in July. I’m antsy to eat and drink my way through Brussels: mussels, frites, chocolate and beer! All of my favorites! Have you visited the country? Any must-sees that we should add to our itinerary?

Bauble of the Week

January 19, 2014 by jessica Leave a Comment

I’ve been a fan of House of Lavande’s costume jewelry for awhile now and I’m even more so after spotting this necklace from their fall/winter collection. The iciness of the opalescent glass would look as beautiful against cozy winter knits as it would with a breezy dress this summer.

The French Wardrobe: Update

January 15, 2014 by jessica Leave a Comment

THE RULES

  1. Quality over quantity.
  2. Basics don’t count.
  3. Accessories don’t count, unless you’re spending a lot more than usual.
  4. Socks and underwear don’t count.
  5. Shoes do count.*

*I’m not counting shoes. I don’t buy an excessive amount of them to begin with.

MY PROGRESS:

The bold items are the new additions since the previous post.

  • Part of my Five: Erin Fetherston lipstick-print dress, Anthropologie cat-print dress, J.Crew Factory tartan-print sweater, Express navy metallic cocktail dress

  • Basics: Banana Republic black pants, Forever 21 white dress, T by Alexander Wang black skirt (still available in grey and navy), J.Crew Factory polka dot popover shirt (similar), J.Crew sweatshirt, Banana Republic navy pants
  • Bags: Diane von Furstenberg clutch, Samudra clutch
  • Accessories: Jennifer Meyer for J.Crew bracelet, Kate Spade belt, opal ring at an antique store in Alexandria, Forever 21 ring, Lulu Frost bangle, J.Crew Factory necklace, Kate Spade bangle, Melanie Auld ring, Karen Hsiang ring, Tory Burch necklace
  • Shoes: Joie tartan flats, Forever 21 d’orsay flats

  • Purged: all of my pencil skirts, 1 dress, 4 pairs of shoes, 1 necklace, 1 bracelet, 2 pairs of earrings, 2 rings

THOUGHTS:

  • There’s only a month and a half left and I have one more fun purchase to make for “my five.” I didn’t really succeed at buying quality items for those (aside from the Erin Fetherston dress), but I’m pretty fond of what I did purchase. I’ve got my eye on a printed DVF or Clover Canyon piece for my last item.
  • I’d like to be more thoughtful about my spring/summer purchases. Some of the items I know I’d like are silky shorts and blouses, a new pair of wear-with-anything sandals and a white sundress (obsessed with this one from BR’s spring 2014 collection). It looks like our Europe trip is most doable in July, so I’d also like a few easy, mixable essentials for traveling.
  • I’m going to start a Pinterest board for the spring challenge to visually record what I purchase. A written list is great, but I think I need the visual reminder to keep tabs on my purchases.
  • As you may have noticed, I have added a few additional pieces (gifts and sponsored items) that aren’t reported here. I’m going to start listing those with my spring French Wardrobe roundups. That’ll kick off on March 1. Anyone want to join in?

Are you curating the French Wardrobe? Post your progress and let me know. I’ll share a link to your post here.

Behind the Brand: Megan Hess

Megan Hess’ illustrations celebrate femininity with a body of work that captures the allure of fashion, the elegance of women wearing the clothes and, at times, the striking interiors inspired by those designs. It’s no wonder that clients such as Chanel, Dior, Tiffany & Co. and Vogue have flocked to her! I’m most drawn to the illustrations rich with turquoise-blue hues: The Chic Hotelier, The Luxurious Spa and the supple Italian Riviera silk scarf.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.

While it claims to be the most haunted place in Europe and is dubbed the city of a thousand ghosts, we only encountered the wire-mesh sculptures of Ghosts in the Gardens (@the_york_bid) and the family of souvenir ghosts I brought home from @yorkghostmerchants.
