Behind the Baubles: Jenny Bird

Behind the Baubles: Jenny Bird :: Bedknobs & Baubles

Canada-based designer Jenny Bird is one of my favorite jewelers right now. Her sleek, modern aesthetic seamlessly mixes gold and silver to create eye-catching statement pieces. And if you’re not already familiar with the brand, you’ll be shocked by how affordable her pieces are. Take this necklace for example. That kind of attention to detail and quality in such a large piece is unheard of at $145 at most retailers. Jenny sums it up best:

I founded my line as an extension of myself; rooted in an innate desire to build something. I am a self-taught designer, and, as it turns out, it’s the most intuitive, effortless process that I have ever known. I am committed to a personal philosophy: the market does not need more soulless, short-lived fashion jewelry, nor does it need over-priced plated pieces. Each piece I design is deeply inspired and well thought-out;  produced in the highest quality, and sold at a fair price.

Not only does her approach to creating beautiful, accessible pieces earn my respect, it earns my total fangirl approach to her brand. My collection includes these major statement earrings, this pair that has incredible movement, and this minimal choker. Up next? I’ve got my eye on this pair of oversize studs in oxidized brass. Don’t they just look like the perfect accent piece for summer’s bohemian-inspired dresses?

Behind the Baubles: Lisi Lerch

Lisi-Lerch-Interview

Anyone with a penchant for tassels, vintage jewelry, and Palm Beach should have Lisi Lerch’s site bookmarked! Her jewelry collection is brimming with beaded and silky tassels in just about every color you can imagine, along with other pieces that exude vintage chic.

While Lisi created her namesake brand in 2001, the entrepreneur didn’t always have jewelry in her sights. She actually began by selling Kentucky Derby hats to women after noticing a lack of affordable options in the marketplace. Jewelry became part of the brand a few years later when Lisi tried her hand at jewelry design and was hooked. As her business continued to grow, so did her family and Lisi ultimately realized that traveling to trunk shows with baubles was much easier than storing and maneuvering hats. Lisi made the decision to shift her focus to growing the jewelry side of her business.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to dub Lisi the queen of tassel jewelry. She just does it so well, as you probably noticed in Monday’s post! Learn more about Lisi below.

Behind the Baubles: Alexa Leigh

Behind the Baubles: Alexa Leigh

It all started when Alexa Leigh Meyer designed double pendant necklaces to be worn with one pendant in front and another at the nape of your neck. Since then, Alexa expanded her line to include additional pieces that can only be defined as modern classics. Her collection is crafted from precious metals — many are studded with diamond pavé — that mix and match with other items from the collection and your own jewelry box to create a look that’s both unique and timeless.

Behind the Baubles: Tarin Thomas

TarinThomas-1

The next time you’re in search of dainty stacking rings, look no further than Tarin Thomas. Designer Kylie Nakao worked as a buyer for a New York boutique after graduating from Parsons School of Art & Design. Kylie reviewed jewelry from hundreds of vendors each season and noticed a lack of what she calls “cool, sophisticated, real jewelry,” the everyday pieces that mix seamlessly with the rest of one’s jewelry wardrobe. And with that, the Tarin Thomas collection was born. The pieces are a modern take on fine jewelry, created with precious and semi-precious gemstones and produced in sterling silver and gold.

Behind the Baubles: Majdan Rocks

MajdanRocks-BehindTheBaubles-10

As a trained artist and performer, Iwona Majdan is no stranger to challenging conventions. In fact, for one of her early situational art pieces, “The Dinner Project,” Iwona invited herself to a stranger’s home every Sunday for dinner. The yearlong piece explored issues of trust and a desire for human connection. It also pushed social boundaries. This subversive attitude is evident in her jewelry line, Majdan Rocks, that launched in 2012. There are two collections available to shop: Rebellion, marked by chunky silhouettes and edgy angles, and Love Bites, statement-making pieces with bite-mark impressions. The unexpected design of the Love Bites collection skyrocketed the chunky bite necklace and the subtle pendant version to the top of my wishlist.

For You…

I bought this dress recently and it’s a good one! The nipped-in waist is flattering and it looks just as cute with sneakers as it does with ballet flats.

For Home…

Outdoor cocktailing is right around the corner, making it the perfect time to stock up on acrylic drinkware.

Buying tickets to the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit l Buying tickets to the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit last November seemed both reckless and naively hopeful. I’m so glad I went for it though, as our first fully vaccinated adventure has been the breath of fresh air we needed. (I’m also happy to report that most people are masked up walking outside, and there are plenty of social-distanced dining options in Chicago.)

I’d also like to point out that I’m embracing the middle part as not to let my Millennial show. 😉

If you're unfamiliar with Winc, the California-based winery was founded in 2012 with the belief that wine should be more accessible. So, they've introduced an online membership experience that suggests wines based on your taste preferences making it a really fun way to try wine if you’re at all intimidated by an expansive wine aisle!

I know everyone loves wick trimmers for their cand I know everyone loves wick trimmers for their candles, but you're missing out if you don't have a taper shaver, too! It's an inexpensive gadget that can save you from forcing a candle into a holder and risking breakage — of either the holder or the candle itself. I linked to some options in today's blog post! (URL in bio.)
When we moved into our home three-and-a-half years When we moved into our home three-and-a-half years ago, Dave added an indoor security camera to our living room. I’ll be the first to admit that the option for 24/7 surveillance (which can, thankfully, be shut off automatically when you arrive home) was a little strange, but it’s absolutely worth the peace of mind that comes with a smart camera. When we’ve been away, we’ve checked in on the cat to see what he’s been up to and we’ve been able to verify that the person detected in our house was someone we lent a key to! We’ve since decided to relocate that one outdoors and were delighted to have the opportunity to partner with @ecobeehome to try out their SmartCamera as an indoor replacement. It was a natural fit as we already have – and love – an ecobee thermostat and this camera integrates seamlessly into the brand’s app. The camera has a 180-degree field of view that lets you track activity in your home, giving us a much wider view of the main floor than the other camera allowed. Privacy is still paramount as the camera uses WiFi and GPS to detect when family members are home, which shuts off the recording option. It’s also equipped with voice controls and Alexa, allowing you to connect with the technology you need for your household. And, while it’s not the most important aspect of a smart camera, the design of this one is *really* good.
