I know we still have awhile to go before spring is officially here. (Thirty-four days, in fact, It’s not like I’m counting down or anything.) However, I just couldn’t resist breaking out my latest wardrobe addition this past weekend when the temperatures flirted with the above-freezing mark. This dress is, without a doubt, my favorite piece for spring. I love the long sleeves and shirt detailing at the top that make it appropriate for work. I love the swingy, gathered skirt that hits right above the hips. And I especially love the wallet-friendly price tag of just $58. It’s not often that one of my go-to pieces comes in at such a low price, but it’s serendipitous when it does!

Last Friday, Dave and I decided to book a last-minute hotel for Saturday night in Milwaukee. We didn’t have much planned other than joining in the Mitten Fest hoopla at Burnhearts, a small bar in neighboring Bay View with an excellent beer lineup. They host the annual outdoor festival to raise money and collect donations for a local nonprofit, and lure people there with beer, food, and live music. And while I wore a more practical coat than the one featured here (and one I didn’t mind having beer splashed on), this outfit is a pretty good representation of what I typically wear in the winter for daytime drinks at cozy beer bars, running errands, and sightseeing strolls around the city. Plus, it’s a great example of why having a fun coat collection is vital for beating the winter doldrums. It’s hard to be unhappy about winter’s chill when there’s a pretty coat in your arsenal!

Happy almost-Valentine’s Day, ladies! Dave and I aren’t big on celebrating on Feb. 14 with anything more than a heart-shaped pizza and the heart-shaped balloon that accompanies it. In fact, today is actually the special occasion for us as we celebrate six years together! Back in 2011, we met online and chatted for a couple of days before we decided to say hello in person on Feb. 2. The Madison area had a blizzard the night before and the city was all but shut down, but there was one restaurant open nearby and we figured that a little snow (ahem, almost two feet of snow) couldn’t get in the way of a budding romance. Madison’s unseasonably warm temperatures seem well-deserved after the ice storms we had early last week that turned the city into a skating rink. My car is parked outside at the top of a slight incline, and I’d have enough momentum to shuffle halfway to my Jetta before sliding back to my starting point. Over and over and over again. It took a dozen attempts before I could grab the door handle and pull myself forward! I’m thrilled I won’t have to contend with that this Monday morning, but I’m even more excited to finally break out my first purchase of 2017: a polka dot Diane von Furstenberg dress. (Any year that starts with a pretty designer frock is destined to be a fantastic one, right?) It’s longer than what I usually wear, so I prefer to go sans tights with heels to give it a little oomph (which may be code for “sex appeal,” but that’s an adjective I don’t actually use for myself). It also looks adorable with sandals, but we’ll have to wait a few months for that!
