Does Your Wardrobe Spark Joy?

January 23, 2015 by jessica 12 Comments

ToryBurchSandals1

I’m due for another closet cleanout soon. It’s a daunting annual task and a humbling come-to-Jesus moment when I try on almost every item and ask myself three questions:

  1. Does it fit?
  2. Is it flattering?
  3. Is it right for my lifestyle?

I recently discovered that I was missing one crucial question: Does it spark joy?

Last week, I came across an article that described the organization secret of Marie Kondo, the author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. She suggests cleansing your home–in this case, wardrobe–by asking one simple question: Does it spark joy? If it doesn’t, simply thank the item for the role it has played in your life and move on.

Yes, it does seem pretty hokey at first blush. However, the more I thought about it over the past week, the more I found myself using it as a litmus test for purchases. And you know what? It has been freeing. Take the striped DVF dress, for instance. It had all the hallmarks of something I’d love. It’s striped. It’s by my favorite designer. It’s a dress. It’s well made. It fit well. However, something about it didn’t spark joy for me. I tried on another dress I ordered from Shopbop (which is sadly sold out, but you can find the maxi dress version here) and I was over the moon. I was giddy and I couldn’t wait to show Dave.

It sparked joy.

What I love most about this process is that it doesn’t suggest giving items the heave-ho if they haven’t been worn in a year (the usual closet cleaning mantra). If an item resonates with you, you’ll wear it again eventually. Maybe last year wasn’t the right time. Maybe the year prior wasn’t even the right time. Maybe this year will be.

It’s really about getting rid of the items that feel like an emotional burden, allowing your closet to be a joyful space. It brings emotion back to clothing. I don’t want to “curate” a closet (and God forbid I ever have a capsule wardrobe). I want my purchases to be joyful. If that means a hot pink dress one month and a boyish button down the next, so be it.

Oh goodness, are you gals as strapped for cash as I am after the holidays? I’m baffled by how quickly all of those gifts and our impromptu weekend in Chicago added up! I’m trying to be more mindful of my finances as we head into the new year and fortunately there are some incredible style steals to be found:

  • MICHAEL Michael Kors striped top, $60
  • Paloma Barceló espadrille flats, $80*
  • J.Crew metallic skirt, $48 with code SHOPNOW
  • J.Crew bracelet, $78
  • River Island cami, $38
  • Elizabeth Cole earrings, $51
  • Clare Vivier clutch, $98

*I don’t understand how these made it to the end of Net-a-Porter’s sale. They’re so darn cute!

Four NYE Outfits for Any Situation

December 31, 2014 by jessica 7 Comments

It’s New Year’s Eve and do you know where your outfit is? If you’re like me, it’s probably at the mall. I barely knew what I was going to wear on Christmas Day. Planning something for a week later was laughable. No matter how you’re celebrating, I hope you have a wonderful evening and a happy and healthy new year. Thanks for following along and here’s to a stylish 2015!

Whether you’re tired of the holiday hoopla or just want to use real crystal stemware, staying at home is a heck of a way to ring in 2015…even if it’s when your alarm finally wakes you up the next morning. Cozy up in an oversize menswear night shirt (with a lacy little bralette and matching thong underneath–you’re lazy, not dead) and channel surf right over to Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New  Year’s Eve with Ryan Seacrest. Nodding off? Treat yourself to a sparkly mani. The fear of smudging freshly applied polish should be enough to keep you up well past your bedtime.

What better place to go overboard on champagne and eat an embarrassingly large portion of the cheese plate than with the comfort of friends? This is where you can let loose, play Cards Against Humanity, and admit to which card makes you giggle uncontrollably. These people accept those character flaws. Put a little effort in with a full satin skirt, bright lipstick, and a sweater that describes just how good you feel after all that Sofia. The sweater is a must. You’ll probably be crashing here later and will appreciate the comfort.

Leave those intricate spangly ensembles (and astronomical dry cleaning bills) to the amateurs. After years of elbowing your way to the front of the line, you know just one thing will get you through this New Year’s Eve battleground, wardrobe unscathed: black, machine-washable clothing. A wayward vodka cranberry came tumbling toward you? No worries. Just dab it off with a bar rag and keep dancing! Better yet, when you’re shoulder-to-shoulder by the bar, no one will notice that you’re just wearing a black sweater, your favorite black pants, and a pair of sensible flats. Just be sure to don an incredible piece of statement jewelry so you look a little less like a burglar (and perhaps more like an experienced jewel thief…).

If you’re headed to one of these shindigs, I understand your trepidation. Will others be friendly? Will your boyfriend act differently? What weird things will you learn about him? All of these unknowns come with one major upside: you can make a memorable first impression. Opt for a jewel-tone dress (quite possibly as red as the Solo cup you’ll be drinking out of), sparkly shoes, and a Happy New Year hat–the night’s must-have accessory.

Shopbop Sale! Wear Now | Wear Later

December 30, 2014 by jessica 6 Comments

wearnowwearlater1

Shopbop just threw its hat into the ring of fantastic post-holiday sales with an extra 25% off all discounted items. Of course, you could spring for a cozy sweater you’ll wear the rest of the season (it is the most practical choice with plenty of winter ahead of us), but I’m thinking something more versatile like a handbag. There are hundreds of handbags on sale, including Rebecca Minkoff’s Perry satchel and the darling bag above from Karen Walker.

A good handbag isn’t cheap, even with the extra discount, but I do think it’s where your money is best spent if you’re looking for just one beautiful piece to take you into spring. You’ll use a light, neutral bag long after the last snowflake melts with a lacy white dress and a pair of simple sandals from Splendid. Throw in carefree, glittery accents with a tassel necklace from Shay Accessories and retro sunglasses from Kate Spade. Until then, bundle up in an oversize coat with sensible black pants and Tory Burch’s snakeskin flats. (I have the blue pair and love them. Go with your regular size.) Add a bit of warmth with edgy rose gold accessories to complement the bag’s feminine hue.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
