Now that the iPhone 6 has been released–and retailers will soon switch to manufacturing phone cases for the new version–I’m on the lookout for a new case to hold me over until I make a phone upgrade (which probably won’t happen next year). The Tory Burch case I featured last week is a top contender. Cusp sent over a coupon for $25 off a purchase of $50 or more after purchasing the Ted Baker skirt. At least that would bring the price down to something more reasonable.

I may have found a new wallet already (it’s on my fall must-have list). This Coach wallet is small, sleek and ultra practical. It comes in a couple of bright colors, but I like the neutral option best. However, I really would have preferred it in black.

I’m also crushing on this sultry nail color for autumn.

Wardrobe Planning | Fall and Winter

September 10, 2014 by jessica 10 Comments

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]S[/dropcap]ix months have passed since I did my last wardrobe planning post. Even though I put a lot of thought into the basics my wardrobe needed, the pieces that caught my attention, and the color scheme I was gaga for, I strayed from my plan almost immediately. I’m not sure why, but I suspect it was because a rigid checklist took a lot of the fun out of shopping, especially when I was trying it in conjunction with The French Wardrobe Challenge.

I’m taking a different approach this season with a seasonal budget of $1,500 and plenty of flexibility to buy more statement pieces than basics, if that’s what my heart desires. However, I’m still incorporating two important principles of The French Wardrobe Challenge: purchase quality over quantity and make sure my wardrobe has a solid foundation of well-made basics. In an effort to keep my purchases somewhat reasonable, I did put together some thoughts on the colors, silhouettes and individual items I’d love to add this season.

[spacer]

THE BUDGET

I’ve started with a seasonal budget of $1,500. I consider blog revenue and eBay sales to be “fun money” and may add a portion of that additional income to my overall seasonal budget. I’ll record any budget increases or expenditures each month. (There will also be my annual “Tax Refund Splurge,” but I’ll devote a post to that in January.)

[spacer]

THE COLORS

I’m looking forward to a fall color palette of saturated colors like burgundy, navy, and emerald, with a jolt of fuchsia. I hadn’t really considered bright pink to be a fall favorite until I came across this pair of shoes. It’s such a classic pump that the shocking color doesn’t look garish on them. I’d also like a pink coat to combat the dreariest winter days.

THE SILHOUETTES

I  spent some time looking through my Pinterest boards for fall style inspiration and these four picks sum up the silhouettes I’m looking for rather nicely. They’re all classic shapes and styles, but attention to detail and crisp, refined styling keep them interesting.

THE WISH LIST

I know I’ve mentioned this before, but I keep a secret Pinterest board of all of my potential purchases. Once I add an item to this board, it sits for a few weeks while I consider whether or not it’s worth it–and many times I fall out of love with the item before I’ve actually taken the plunge. It’s basically a cooling off period. I’ve found that I’m much happier with my new items after I’ve given them plenty of thought. (If you’re curious about any of the items, click away: shoes, top, sunglasses, earrings, skirt, bag, clutch.)

THE MUST HAVES

And now we’re on to the fun part: the items I’m anxious to check off my must-have list! You can view all of the items I add to my wardrobe over the next six months here.

  • black ankle boots (Perhaps this pair from Cole Haan? I like the slightly pointed toe and a heel that’s substantial enough for slippery sidewalks.)
  • black opaque tights
  • navy opaque tights
  • statement coat or cape
  • dark floral skirt (Check!)
  • chunky knit sweater
  • ladylike quilted purse
  • gold stud earrings
  • navy a-line skirt (Check!)
  • oversize cat eye sunglasses
  • wallet (mine is on its last legs)

YOUR TURN

Have you started thinking about your fall wardrobe? What are your must-have items?

Welcome

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”] W [/dropcap]elcome to the new blog! I had no intention of ever leaving Tumblr for WordPress until my previous platform had a falling out with Bloglovin’, preventing my new posts from showing up. Even thought I hoped for a resolution between the two companies, moving over to WordPress was probably the best outcome I could have asked for. Dave and I spent most of Saturday and Sunday making tweaks to create a site I’m really excited about.

A few things to note:

  • Disqus comments didn’t import seamlessly. Please know that I appreciate your comments and I didn’t hastily decide to forgo the old ones. We’re back in business for incoming thoughts, though. (The comment link is now at the top of the post under the title.)
  • Tumblr and WordPress have different conventions for creating links. Dave was able to work his magic to make sure old links to individual posts redirect to the correct one on WordPress. However, if you linked to a category page at any point (like The French Wardrobe Challenge posts), those links are broken. Let me know if you want to update them and I’ll send over the new link.
  • Bloglovin’ should start importing the new posts soon, if they haven’t done so already. Bear with me while I figure out that last piece of the puzzle.
  • If you find anything that’s broken, please let me know. I’m sure I missed something along the way!

Thanks again for reading! You gals are the best!

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”] A [/dropcap]SOS is offering an additional 15% off its sale items (code: SUMMERDONTGO). I scored this little black and white mod dress. The shape looks similar to my other beloved ASOS dress and the simplicity of the design will be a great canvas for jewelry this fall.

Have you seen DVF’s new metallic 440 envelope clutch? It comes in champagne and “Neptune blue” (a.k.a. a gorgeous navy).

Leatherology is a new-to-me company with leather goods at incredibly reasonable price points. I don’t know much about the company, but I’m curious to know if the personal and travel accessories are as lovely in person.

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]I[/dropcap]’m not sure if my love of neutral colors and classic silhouettes was a result of the limitations of The French Wardrobe Challenge or if the challenge simply helped me identify those pieces as my favorites, but either way, I’m finding that my personal style is becoming easier to pinpoint with each season: classic cuts in well-made textiles, punctuated with interesting accessories and unexpected details.

At least that’s what I want it to be.

Thankfully a new season is the time to hone this newfound style M.O. and judging by the recent pins on my style inspiration board, I’m eager to reinvent my wardrobe and bring some of my summer staples into fall. I’m on the lookout for a cozy sweater, thick tights, ankle boots, and an incredible piece of jewelry to make this dress appropriate for weekend outings on upcoming cool, crisp days.

(If you’re curious, this photo was taken in Brussels on the path leading up to Halle Gate.)

Congrats to Jillian of Cornflake Dreams on winning the $150 gift card to spend on jewelry at KiraKira! I can’t wait to see what you pick out!

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
