Four NYE Outfits for Any Situation

December 31, 2014 by jessica 7 Comments

It’s New Year’s Eve and do you know where your outfit is? If you’re like me, it’s probably at the mall. I barely knew what I was going to wear on Christmas Day. Planning something for a week later was laughable. No matter how you’re celebrating, I hope you have a wonderful evening and a happy and healthy new year. Thanks for following along and here’s to a stylish 2015!

Whether you’re tired of the holiday hoopla or just want to use real crystal stemware, staying at home is a heck of a way to ring in 2015…even if it’s when your alarm finally wakes you up the next morning. Cozy up in an oversize menswear night shirt (with a lacy little bralette and matching thong underneath–you’re lazy, not dead) and channel surf right over to Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New  Year’s Eve with Ryan Seacrest. Nodding off? Treat yourself to a sparkly mani. The fear of smudging freshly applied polish should be enough to keep you up well past your bedtime.

What better place to go overboard on champagne and eat an embarrassingly large portion of the cheese plate than with the comfort of friends? This is where you can let loose, play Cards Against Humanity, and admit to which card makes you giggle uncontrollably. These people accept those character flaws. Put a little effort in with a full satin skirt, bright lipstick, and a sweater that describes just how good you feel after all that Sofia. The sweater is a must. You’ll probably be crashing here later and will appreciate the comfort.

Leave those intricate spangly ensembles (and astronomical dry cleaning bills) to the amateurs. After years of elbowing your way to the front of the line, you know just one thing will get you through this New Year’s Eve battleground, wardrobe unscathed: black, machine-washable clothing. A wayward vodka cranberry came tumbling toward you? No worries. Just dab it off with a bar rag and keep dancing! Better yet, when you’re shoulder-to-shoulder by the bar, no one will notice that you’re just wearing a black sweater, your favorite black pants, and a pair of sensible flats. Just be sure to don an incredible piece of statement jewelry so you look a little less like a burglar (and perhaps more like an experienced jewel thief…).

If you’re headed to one of these shindigs, I understand your trepidation. Will others be friendly? Will your boyfriend act differently? What weird things will you learn about him? All of these unknowns come with one major upside: you can make a memorable first impression. Opt for a jewel-tone dress (quite possibly as red as the Solo cup you’ll be drinking out of), sparkly shoes, and a Happy New Year hat–the night’s must-have accessory.

Shopbop Sale! Wear Now | Wear Later

December 30, 2014 by jessica 6 Comments

Shopbop just threw its hat into the ring of fantastic post-holiday sales with an extra 25% off all discounted items. Of course, you could spring for a cozy sweater you’ll wear the rest of the season (it is the most practical choice with plenty of winter ahead of us), but I’m thinking something more versatile like a handbag. There are hundreds of handbags on sale, including Rebecca Minkoff’s Perry satchel and the darling bag above from Karen Walker.

A good handbag isn’t cheap, even with the extra discount, but I do think it’s where your money is best spent if you’re looking for just one beautiful piece to take you into spring. You’ll use a light, neutral bag long after the last snowflake melts with a lacy white dress and a pair of simple sandals from Splendid. Throw in carefree, glittery accents with a tassel necklace from Shay Accessories and retro sunglasses from Kate Spade. Until then, bundle up in an oversize coat with sensible black pants and Tory Burch’s snakeskin flats. (I have the blue pair and love them. Go with your regular size.) Add a bit of warmth with edgy rose gold accessories to complement the bag’s feminine hue.

I know nothing about Smith & Cult’s nail polish other than the bottle is really pretty. Has anyone tried it?

RESOLVE
I suspect many of us will be posting about our 2015 resolutions next week. Take a peek at this guide before setting your new year’s goals.

LISTEN
We just finished binge-listening to Serial. SNL’s holiday parody is a hilarious take on the phenomenon.

SHOP
You can take 25% off sale items at Anthropologie. I’m considering a few things to tuck away for next year’s gifting season, like this fluffy owl and a set of perfumed soaps. (Speaking of sales, Nordstrom started its clearance sale, Tory Burch also has an extra 25% off sale items with code NEWYEAR, as does Rebecca Minkoff with code BYE2014.)

DAYDREAM
Thirty-six hours in Casablanca would be heaven. I don’t think I’d ever leave the markets.

Budget Update

December 26, 2014 by jessica 12 Comments

BudgetUpdateDec2014

I may have gone a little overboard in a month that’s supposed to be about other people, but there were too many great deals to pass up. (Isn’t that always a convenient excuse?)

[spacer]

ERIN FETHERSTON DRESS

First up, the most stressful purchase of the month: a cocktail dress to wear to Dave’s office party. I’ve gained a bit of weight over the last few months and I didn’t feel confident in any of the dresses already in my closet. Sure, I could have squeezed into something with the help of Spanx, but I wanted something I was excited to wear. I first tried this dress. I thought I could get over the goofiness of the ruffled flaps in person, but they’re in such an awkward spot and kind of looked like limp fins. Eventually I came across this Erin Fetherston dress on Amazon. All of my favorite cocktail dresses are by the designer. You’d think I’d learn to stop wasting time trying on other dresses when I know one of her looks will win my heart.

LULU FROST RING

I’ve wanted the Lulu Frost #2 code ring for a well over a year and the perfect excuse fell into my lap a few weeks ago. At the end of November, I received a 40% off coupon from the company as a thank you for supporting the brand through my blog (such an unexpected surprise!). Naturally, I placed an order immediately. I’m fond of the number for a few reasons: my numerology number is a two, I’m a Gemini (the twins), and, most meaningful, I met Dave on February 2nd (2/2). I love having an everyday piece that commemorates our first date.

[spacer]

MONICA VINADER BRACELET

This Monica Vinader bracelet also made its way home to my jewelry box after Black Friday. It’s incredibly gorgeous and well made. I’ll admit that two silver pieces seems a little uncharacteristic this month, given that I usually go for oversize gold pieces. However, I do favor silver tones for fine jewelry. I think it’s a little more versatile and mixes well with yellow gold.

[spacer]

TORY BURCH SANDALS

Last, but not least, sandals. Sandals are kind of a stupid purchase for December. I get that. But these Tory Burch slides are so pretty and a heck of a deal at $132. I also tried the petal toe ring sandals from Loeffler Randall, which were a little uncomfortable at the toe strap. I suspect it would get softer after some wear and I did like that the scallop strap had elastic on the sides to accommodate different foot widths.

UP NEXT

So, where do we go from here? You’ll see below that I was lucky enough to add quite a bit of money to my budget this month. It almost covered my purchases for December, leaving me with just over $100 to last through February. I do have a $200 Visa gift card to spend on something indulgent. I’m also going to add a couple hundred from this year’s work bonus to my budget, since that was unexpected money anyway. I’d still like to snag a summery purse (perhaps this one) and a new sundress if we do book a trip to Florida. Wouldn’t a Clover Canyon dress be fun for a tropical escape? I love the Dancing Silk Slip Dress. (With my Shopbop collaboration, I receive a shopping credit each month and am seriously considering that dress, even if the bra situation for the frock baffles me.)

[spacer]

THE BUDGET

I started with a six-month budget of $1,500. I consider blog revenue and eBay sales to be “fun money” and will add a portion of that additional income to my overall seasonal budget (if it doesn’t end up in my travel fund first). I’ll record any budget increases or expenditures here each month. Anything that has been ordered and has not yet arrived will appear on the next budget update. (There will also be an annual “Tax Refund Splurge” that goes above my budget, but I’ll devote a post to that in January.)

  • $1,500 starting budget
  • + $655 added to the budget this season ($455 this month)
  • – $2052.59 spent this season ($473.54 this month)
  • = $102.41 remaining

Blogging is getting less and less transparent and I want to be clear with what I’ve purchased and what items I’ve received as part of a collaboration. I’m awfully picky about the brands I work with–and won’t post items I don’t love–so rest assured these are solid.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
