[dropcap custom_class=”normal”] A [/dropcap]SOS is offering an additional 15% off its sale items (code: SUMMERDONTGO). I scored this little black and white mod dress. The shape looks similar to my other beloved ASOS dress and the simplicity of the design will be a great canvas for jewelry this fall.

Have you seen DVF’s new metallic 440 envelope clutch? It comes in champagne and “Neptune blue” (a.k.a. a gorgeous navy).

Leatherology is a new-to-me company with leather goods at incredibly reasonable price points. I don’t know much about the company, but I’m curious to know if the personal and travel accessories are as lovely in person.

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]I[/dropcap]’m not sure if my love of neutral colors and classic silhouettes was a result of the limitations of The French Wardrobe Challenge or if the challenge simply helped me identify those pieces as my favorites, but either way, I’m finding that my personal style is becoming easier to pinpoint with each season: classic cuts in well-made textiles, punctuated with interesting accessories and unexpected details.

At least that’s what I want it to be.

Thankfully a new season is the time to hone this newfound style M.O. and judging by the recent pins on my style inspiration board, I’m eager to reinvent my wardrobe and bring some of my summer staples into fall. I’m on the lookout for a cozy sweater, thick tights, ankle boots, and an incredible piece of jewelry to make this dress appropriate for weekend outings on upcoming cool, crisp days.

(If you’re curious, this photo was taken in Brussels on the path leading up to Halle Gate.)

Wearing: Piperlime dress (similar) | Rivet & Sway sunglasses c/o | Coach bag | Lulu Frost necklace | Hermes bracelet | Vrai & Oro ring c/o | Cynthia Jones ring c/o | Lacee Alexandra ring c/o | Sam Edelman sandals

Congrats to Jillian of Cornflake Dreams on winning the $150 gift card to spend on jewelry at KiraKira! I can’t wait to see what you pick out!

Lately

I bought this DVF purse on Gilt last year and it’s still one of my favorites. (I don’t feature it often here, though. I usually opt for a purse I can put my camera in after taking photos.) It’s now available online at Saks Off Fifth and I strongly recommend it if you’re in the market for a small bag. It fits a card case, an iPhone, beauty essentials, and a bulky set of keys with room to spare. Besides, the bright red is pretty fun. (My dress is no longer available, but this one is similar.)

image

I spent Labor Day weekend visiting my parents in Northern Wisconsin and took a detour past my childhood home. No one has purchased the house yet. My hometown is pretty economically depressed and buyers are more interested in an open concept home—not exactly a strength of a Victorian.

image

Finally purchased NARS’ “orgasm” blush after hearing great things about it for years. With sheer, buildable coverage, it’s just as good as everyone says. I also bought a charcoal mask that I’m thrilled with. It didn’t do much the first couple of times, but I woke up with noticeably softer skin and clearer pores after night three.

image

I’ve been layering dainty gems in lieu of a larger piece of jewelry. The hammered bar is by Gorjana and the gemstone piece is Kalan by Suzanne Kalan.

image

During our Labor Day visit, we headed up to Bayfield and took the ferry over to Lake Superior’s Madeline Island.

image

I bought my first fall item: this gorgeous floral skirt by Ted Baker. The quality is impeccable and it even has a small crinoline to keep the bottom full. It’s still a little too warm to wear it, but it makes the approaching cool weather easier to tolerate.

Postcards | Bruges

Finally some trip photos! We’re heading up to Northern Wisconsin to visit my parents over Labor Day weekend and even though I’m their favorite only daughter, there’s no way they’re going to sit through 2,000 vacation photos. Dave and I weeded through the images last night (beer in hand) to create a thoughtful album to share with family and friends (four hours later…). First up, our day trip to Bruges:

Midway through our trip to Belgium, we visited the medieval city of Bruges, a quaint little town that looked like it was plucked straight from a storybook—and it would have been much more serene if it weren’t for the rowdy futbol fans littering the city square. We didn’t set out with much of an agenda in Bruges. We snaked up and down the cobblestone streets, stopping at bars and shops along the way.

It’s also where I spent entirely too much money in a Christmas shop. I’m powerless when it comes to Christmas ornaments and even more so after a couple of beers, but how could I possibly resist a little wooden Santa that was hand carved in Germany?! The kicker? There’s room to tuck an incense cone inside his body to create a tiny wisp of smoke that comes out of a small hole next to the pipe perched in his mouth. It’s great. Forty euros great? Yes! Dave was a killjoy and reminded me that euros do not equal dollars and I was spending 35% more than I thought I was. Pssh. Memories are priceless (or so I thought when I added more precious memories to my shopping basket). He should just be thankful I talked myself out of a 90 euro nutcracker.

Most of our day was spent gawking at architecture and canals, but we also visited:

  • De Garre: This little bar is tucked away down an alley, as all great Belgian watering holes are. It’s the only place in the world to enjoy their house beer, which is served with a small side of cheese to snack on.
  • Bierbrasserie Cambrinus: Bruges was a little on the pricey side and this certainly wasn’t a budget meal (one of our most expensive on the entire trip), but it was delicious and well worth the stop.
  • Käthe Wohlfahrt: The most magical little Christmas shop.
  • Dille & Kamille: Think of this store as a slightly cheaper Crate & Barrel. It seemed silly to buy kitchen items overseas when I could buy it all Stateside, but I brought home adorable pot holders and a cheese grater. I’m disappointed  to see that they don’t ship to the U.S.
  • ‘t Brugs Beertje: With a notable beer list and plenty of praise on Beer Advocate, there was no doubt we were stopping here before our train back to Brussels. I was also sold on the teddy bear logo.

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”] I [/dropcap]haven’t been paying too much attention to new releases and recent sales since I’ve already put a dent in my fall shopping with this, this, and this, but there are a few things worth noting:

Yolonda alerted me to the Rebecca Taylor sale that has plenty of great items with an additional 40% off. I love the pleated black skirt that comes in at just $78 after the additional discount. Cheaper than J.Crew!

Photo darling Gray Malin’s prints all come with free framing this weekend.

There’s plenty of time left to enter to win $150 to spend on jewelry at KiraKira. Enter here.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
