Behind the Baubles: Cynthia Jones

A myriad of gemstones is an easy recipe for a knockout statement piece, but it can be more interesting to strip away the glitz and really focus on thoughtful design. I admire the honesty of Cynthia Jones’ organic, rough-hewn jewelry. They’re really pieces of art. In fact, her collection reminds me of the gifts I purchase at art fairs, but ultimately keep for myself. With metalwork this beautiful, who could blame me for being selfish?

Outfitted

As I mentioned here, the dress I wanted to wear to last weekend’s wedding didn’t allow the luxury of breathing room. Upon this discovery, I may have flung myself on the bed in a fit of dramatized despair before I took it to the Internet and weighed my options: a girdle or a new dress.

A new dress.

I looked at hundreds of dresses and each time the selection left me underwhelmed, I increased my budget and began again. (At one point, I decided $500 would be absolutely reasonable to spend on a panic purchase.) Obviously it was a long night, but I finally found this Erin Fetherston dress on Amazon. It’s everything a cocktail dress should be: feminine, whimsical and irresistibly sweet.

Bauble of the Week

October 13, 2013 by jessica Leave a Comment

I can’t help but smile when I look at these gobstopper-size earrings from Kenneth Jay Lane. You can find them on Net-A-Porter for $180, but keep an eye on Gilt. They were available late last week for $75.

Loving Lately

October 11, 2013 by jessica Leave a Comment

Lately, I’m loving:

  • The unbelievably gorgeous Anton Heunis earrings I won (squee!) from my-wardrobe.com. The day I professed my love for them, I came across a contest the retailer was hosting to win piece by the designer. Fate? Dumb luck? I don’t care because these babies are mine and they are so much better in person. They’re also huge. I like that.

  • Knowing that my busiest time of the year will be over on October 24. I’m running ragged putting together our annual business expo for the 23rd. There’s a lot to do in an awfully short amount of time. I’m surviving on little sleep, lots of coffee and an unhealthy amount of junk food. Buffalo wings? Pizza? Those too-good-to-be-good-for-you Snyder’s of Hanover buttermilk ranch pretzel pieces? Yes, yes, yes! (Fun Fact: Dave calls me “Stressica” at this time of year.)

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.

While it claims to be the most haunted place in Europe and is dubbed the city of a thousand ghosts, we only encountered the wire-mesh sculptures of Ghosts in the Gardens (@the_york_bid) and the family of souvenir ghosts I brought home from @yorkghostmerchants.
