WIN IT

August 21, 2014 by jessica Leave a Comment

This giveaway is way to good to be hidden at the end of yesterday’s post. It’s your chance to win $150 to spend on beautiful travel-inspired jewelry from KiraKira. Take a look around and let me know what you would choose. Would you pick multiple items to refresh your jewelry box or put it toward one incredible statement piece?

Personally, I’d go for the latter. I’m smitten with this chrysoprase and pink sapphire cocktail ring.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Good luck!

THE THINGS WE DO FOR BLOGGING

August 15, 2014 by jessica Leave a Comment

Last night, I was trying to get the perfect photo for Instagram to show that my new Ferragamos match the painting I created for our bedroom when I heard a laugh behind me. Dave was poised with his phone taking photos of me taking photos of my shoes. I scoffed, “ain’t no shame” and when about my business. Until he threatened to share it via Shapchat with one of our friends. I pleaded with him to keep it private and send it only to me. I promptly made it public on Instagram. I look ridiculous, but this is what blogging is, folks, and I suspect we’ve all had an awkward photo moment once or twice.

Here’s to a weekend filled with awkward poses and situations to get the perfect shot for your blogs next week! Around here, the week will bring some of our trip photos (finally), an interview with the woman behind Kira Kira and a giveaway, my thoughts on Birkenstocks and a French Wardrobe update.

P.S. You should check out Margaret Elizabeth’s weekend sample sale for incredible deals on gemstone jewelry. I bought these in black onyx and moonstone. Sign up for the mailing list for another 15% off. Shipping is just $5.

INTRODUCING | VRAI & ORO

July 8, 2014 by jessica Leave a Comment

You may have spotted this gorgeous ring in yesterday’s post. It’s by a relatively new brand called Vrai & Oro, a fine jewelry retailer that offers simple, delicate staples you’ll want to wear everyday. Vrai & Oro cuts out the middleman—and the normal retail markup of eight to ten times the original value—for fine jewelry sales, allowing the brand to offer ethically produced, high quality jewelry at prices you can actually afford (something that’s not always possible with fine jewelry). Think of them as Everlane’s shinier cousin. The piece above was created for Vrai & Oro’s insiders and can be purchased at this secret page on their site. The sterling silver version is just $65. It’s also available in solid gold for $415. (It’s a weighty piece. You’re definitely getting your money’s worth.) I’m planning to feature the ladies behind the brand tomorrow, but I urge you to browse the site in the meantime. I’m smitten with the gold line stud earrings and the dainty diamond baguette necklace in rose gold.

The ring was gifted to me for purposes of this post. Rest assured that the brand’s generosity does not influence my opinion of the product or its quality. Some images within this post are borrowed from Vrai & Oro’s Instagram feed.

Loving Lately

Lately, I’m loving:

  • This breathtaking necklace that Patile from KALAN by Suzanne Kalan sent to me. It’s one of the prettiest pieces in my jewelry box. (Patile is planning to add e-commerce capabilities to her site in the coming months, which is going to be dangerous for jewelry lovers everywhere. Until then, you can get your fix at Nordstrom.)
  • The official start of Birthday Month, which was the only excuse I needed to buy the Tory Burch scarf that’s been featured in my sidebar for weeks. (Now I need a scarf tutorial more than ever…)
  • Mint juleps and microbrews. The Kentucky Derby is the only sporting event I can fully get behind. You’ll find me cheering for the Run for the Roses on Saturday with a mint julep in hand. (Served in the silver-plated julep cups we purchased in Louisville, naturally.) It’s also the start of Madison’s Craft Beer Week, so don’t be put off by any hops-related Instagrams over the next few days. Cheers!

Loving Lately

April 2, 2014 by jessica Leave a Comment

Lately, I’m loving:

  • The promise of warm weather, so I can break out my favorite spring shoes. I’m itching to wear these Kate Spade pumps again.
  • Iris Apfel’s upcoming sale on One Kings Lane. You know how much I adore this woman (even more so after she referred to herself as a “geriatric starlet”) and I’d love to own a piece that belonged to her. Though, something tells me that the April 5 sale will be priced above my budget.
  • Finally sending off my passport for renewal. I’m not sure if you’re allowed to smile in your photo, but I’m risking it. (The government site isn’t very clear—they require a “neutral expression,” yet some allowable photo examples show people smiling.) Hopefully it gets approved. My non-smiling expression looks pretty angry.
  • An interesting article that reinforces the principles behind The French Wardrobe Challenge.

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
