Behind the Baubles: Rue Gembon

March 18, 2014 by jessica Leave a Comment

Chain-store jewelry can be lackluster (especially when everyone owns the same thing) and great costume jewelry can come with a high price tag, which is why Joyce Lam (left) and Niki Allworth sought to create an online destination with affordable, eye-catching statement gems: Rue Gembon. Before launching the site, Joyce had plenty of experience in the fashion arena (3.1 Phillip Lim, Women’s Wear Daily, Elle), then ventured into styling under Kate Lanphear’s wing. Niki left behind the accounting industry to pursue her passion for fashion graphic design and began freelancing.

In the Details

March 10, 2014 by jessica Leave a Comment

I knew Jennifer of Frippery Vintage would find incredible pieces when she went globetrotting to Italy in search of treasures for her shop, but I didn’t expect her to find the most jaw dropping vintage cocktail ring I’ve ever seen. Two Instagram photos later (here and here), I knew I had to add the gobstopper-size bauble to my collection. It’s everything I love about vintage costume jewelry: brightly colored, oversize, and I won’t see it on someone else. (But if I do spot a lookalike, I’ll know the owner has excellent taste.)

Featured: Ann Taylor jacket (also love this striped blazer) // J.Crew sweater // Banana Republic pants // DVF purse (same style in snakeprint) // vintage ring // Essie’s “Muchi, Muchi” polish

Bauble of the Week

March 9, 2014 by jessica Leave a Comment

I included these Tory Burch earrings in a recent “Currently Coveting” post and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the bold ’60s vibe since. They’re a carefree way to add a bit of glamour to even your most casual looks next season.

Behind the Baubles: Meghna Designs

March 5, 2014 by jessica Leave a Comment

Stunning doesn’t even begin to describe Meghna Patel’s East-meets-West jewelry collection. Drawing inspiration from her native India, the vibrant, intricate designs have been featured in the pages of top publications like Vogue and earned a starring role on the small screen on Gossip Girl. Each piece is handcrafted by Indian artisans who bring Meghna’s designs to life. The ornate pieces in the Taj Mahal collection are my personal favorite with the Mawi earrings topping my list.

Bauble of the Week

March 2, 2014 by jessica Leave a Comment

Here’s hoping that March is in like a lion and out like a lamb this year because on March 31, I’m packing away the tights for the season and accessorizing with bright, tropical colors. This pair of earrings by Melanie Auld would be perfect for the transition. They’re nearly three inches long, have a hint of sparkle and come in turquoise, coral or mother of pearl.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
