9 Holiday Gift Ideas for Men

December 13, 2018 by jessica Leave a Comment

Gift Guide: Men 2018

My biggest pet peeve with holiday gift guides for men is that they’re so predictable. Not every guy wants a J.Crew sweater, whiskey stones, and a French press. There’s nothing wrong with those gifts, of course, but this year I thought back to some of the most well-received gifts I’ve given Dave and my dad to create this list — with a few extra ideas peppered in for good measure.

Pocket Axe – I honestly don’t understand the appeal of this mini axe, but my dad wanted it last year. My parents moved to a rural area a few years ago and my dad hunts, so I assume it’s handy for that lifestyle. If the guy on your list would rather hang out in the kitchen instead of the woods, this chef’s knife is a nice gift.

Bluetooth Speaker – I actually gave this to Dave last year for Christmas. It has great sound for being such a small speaker! It’s also waterproof, making it great for the pool or boat. (Dave’s brother in law tossed it in the lake last summer to test its claim of being able to float. It does, indeed, rise to the top. Phew.)

Bourbon (or Vice of Choice) – Not all guys love bourbon, but I’m willing to bet that most have a guilty pleasure to indulge this holiday season. My dad asked for cigars this year, and I’ll admit I feel a little sheepish giving him something that’s bad for his health.

Cashmere Sweater – Lands’ End and Garnet Hill are two fantastic places to snag quality cashmere at a reasonable price. Dave has this sweater in charcoal and I just gave him the camel-colored one for his birthday. It’s a classic sweater that can be worn to work and looks handsome with a pair of jeans.

Leather Duffle – One of the very first Christmas gifts I gave to Dave was a Floto leather duffle bag. It gets better and better with age, and now brings back so many memories of our travels.

Multi-Bit Driver – Honestly, I love this gift idea for any homeowner — male or female. Nothing is more obnoxious than misplacing the screwdriver you need.

Leather Gloves and jacket – If he doesn’t already have a nice pair of leather gloves, this is something to add to his winter wardrobe. If he’s more of an outdoorsman, opt for these wool gloves with a deerskin palm. (Dave uses the latter when he shovels. They’ve held up for years.)

Smart Switches – I initially thought that smart switches and lights were kind of stupid … until Dave insisted we install them. Scheduling your lights to come on before you get home or when you’re on vacation is amazing.

Bobbleheads– Bobbleheads are fun and quirky dolls that make a lovely gift for every occasion. Whether your daughter is graduating or you’re getting married, a custom bobblehead is a great way to mark the momentous occasion. Lucky Bobbleheads specializes in sculpting custom bobbleheads. We make bobbleheads for various themes, including weddings, graduation, birthdays, promotions, sports, anniversaries, and so on.

Valentine’s Day Gifts for Him

February 7, 2014 by jessica Leave a Comment

Dave and I decided to forgo Valentine’s Day gifts this year, since that cash is better off in a savings account for our trip to Europe. (And, to be honest, I’m really looking forward to our low-key evening of beer, video games, and a heart-shaped pizza.) If you’re still looking for the perfect gift for your sweetie, here are a few ideas that Dave would approve of:

  1. A handsome wool-blend sweater
  2. A versatile everyday watch with a selection of nato straps (I like this all-American version)
  3. Bourbon
  4. A rugged laptop bag that doubles as his day bag on trips (This might be selfish. I hate nothing more than having to carry everything when we’re sightseeing!)
  5. The Complete Beer Course
  6. An apothecary shaving mug (which would look chic on your vanity filled with lipsticks)
  7. Luxe shaving supplies from Mercer + James (I just discovered this great online shop. Take 30% off your purchase through the end of February with the code BAUBLES30.)
  8. City map glasses with one of your favorite destinations
  9. A denim dopp kit
  10. Sphere ice cube molds (I gave a set to Dave for Christmas. Love ‘em.)
  11. A new pair of sunglasses
  12. The best bottle opener on the go
  13. A pair of heart and arrow boxer shorts

Holiday Gift Guide: Men

November 28, 2013 by jessica Leave a Comment

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you’re celebrating the holiday with your nearest and dearest with Black Friday deals on the back burner. However, when the men slip into their post-football, post-turkey tryptophan haze, it’s the perfect time to check off your shopping list. I rounded up a few products that Dave endorses, but a bottle of bourbon is always appreciated if none of these strikes your man’s fancy.

1. Z Gallerie, $20 each // 2. Kaufmann Mercantile, $219 // 3. Gant, $147 // 4. Nike, $70 // 5. Nike, $149 // 6. Kent Wang, $45 // 7. Kiehl’s, $42 // 8. Jack Spade, $10 // 9. Hook + Albert, $25 // 10. 3sixteen, $220 // 11. Smathers & Branson, $65 // 12. Daneson, $5 // 13. Crown & Buckle, $12 // 14. Makr, $11 // 15. Stanley, $75

Valentine Gift Guide

February 6, 2013 by jessica Leave a Comment

I’ve been struggling with finding the perfect gift for Dave this year. (Between Christmas and his December birthday, I’ve exhausted all of my ideas!) Here are a few options to get you started if you’re still on the hunt for the perfect present (or just looking to treat yourself).

For Her

  • Dainty underpinnings in the prettiest shade of pink
  • A ring that’s lovely on its own or stacked with others
  • Dessert plates
  • A playful frock
  • Ladylike earrings
  • A quirky trinket box (preferably with gems inside)
  • Pastel flats
  • A bright card case

For Him

  • Rugged weekender (and overnight plans)
  • Sunglasses in a classic shape, but with an unexpected detail (the arms of these are tipped in orange)
  • An unexpected tie bar, like an anchor or the Chrysler Building
  • A belt perfect for weekends
  • An elegant slim wallet
  • Cologne in his favorite scent (or just one with great packaging)
  • Playful pocket squares

I purchased a pair immediately … and then gave them to Dave right after wrapping them in Christmas paper. I’m terrible with surprises.

Three people will win a pair of Knotz cuff links from Wurkin Stiffs. There are three styles up for grabs: the traditional round pair, barber pole and square peg. One winner will be selected for each style, but you can pick the color.

I am just the happiest! I keep looking at this bat I am just the happiest! I keep looking at this bathroom and thinking how lucky we are that we were able to do this! It wasn’t always easy to navigate the stressful moments, but the end result is worth it. I feel like I’m at a luxury hotel every time I shower! (And it sure beats showering with the spiders in our [basically unfinished] basement bathroom. It was like camping in our own home for the past six weeks — and I very much hate camping!)

More photos to come!

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye ... to So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye ... to this bathroom. Demolition on our upstairs main bathroom starts today! I love old houses and #OldHouseThings, but this bathroom's prior renovation clearly isn't part of the original home -- nor was it done well. A leak from the bathtub into our kitchen on Easter 2020 kicked off our plans for the renovation and it's finally coming to fruition two years later. The prior damage wasn't caused by leaking pipes (although we just replaced all of the old galvanized pipes with PVC plumbing to futureproof the house); it was from water pooling on the edge of the tub after a shower and then spilling over the side onto the floor. As we discovered, the tub isn't level (nor is the toilet) which caused water to flow over. I'm sure we'll discover plenty of other water damage as our contractor's team starts pulling everything out and I'm so excited for the peace of mind that will come from getting everything in tip top shape.

Today is also the day that fixtures will be installed in the half bath! There's a short punch list of small things yet to do in that space, but the finished product is right around the corner!
