In the Pink

MarchOutfit1v12

Even though I’m absolutely exhausted the week Daylight Savings Time begins, knowing that warm weather is on the horizon is worth every minute of sleepiness! The majority of this week is forecasted to be in the upper 50s and I can’t wait to wear more spring dresses (sans tights!) like this a-line shift from BB Dakota. It’s such an easy piece to throw on and feel pulled together. (It’s only $88, which makes the blue version awfully tempting.)

Classic Cool

Saturdays are for playing favorites and, for me, that usually means turning to the classics. Nothing feels more effortless than a striped sweater and a pair of cropped pants (with plenty of stretch!). I actually received the sweater from Garnet Hill last week and it’s already one of my favorite pieces. It’s unbelievably soft and didn’t lose its shape through the course of the day. (I would have worn it again on Sunday if we weren’t getting together with the same people!)

I’ll admit that I didn’t know much about Garnet Hill prior to receiving my sweater. The brand was established in 1976 and was known for introducing high-quality flannel sheets to the marketplace through its mail-order catalog. Even though its product offerings have expanded drastically (Lilly Pulitzer bedding, anyone?), Garnet Hill still prides itself on offering products with fine natural fibers. This cashmere sweater is no different and can I just point out that the stripes match up on the side seams? You know that’s basically the universal sign of good quality. 😉

Bows on Toes

FebOutfit1v1

Any day above freezing is a day for coat-free outfit photos! And what better way to show off my favorite new skirt?! I couldn’t be happier with the windowpane design and the short, flippy style.

Now, let’s talk shoes. These darling block-heel pumps are from DUO, a new-to-me British brand that specializes in classic designs with customizable fits. If I hadn’t been enamored with the “Karin” style (give me a ’60s inspiration any day), I would have opted for a pair of boots. I have a hard time finding boots to fit my calves and the made-to-measure shafts are awfully tempting. I wear a standard size 7 and went with the European 37, even if it technically translates into a size 6.5. They fit perfectly, they’re comfortable, and the quality is outstanding.

My Favorite Things

January 19, 2015 by jessica 14 Comments

JanuaryOutfit3-12

Little striped dresses and turquoise, mint accents. These are a few of my faaaa-vor-ite things.

Please go back and reread that in the tune of The Sound of Music song, if you didn’t already.

Seriously, though, this little dress really is one of my new favorites. I found it on sale for just $15. I didn’t have high hopes for it when I placed the order, but it was cheap and returnable, so why not? Little did I know that I’d fall in love with it. The jersey fabric has a nice weight to it and it didn’t even get stretched out during the five hour round trip drive we took to Decorah on Saturday to visit the Toppling Goliath brewery. (Yes, it was warm enough to go without tights this weekend–a rare treat in January!)

While we’re on the topic of striped dresses, I did order the DVF striped wrap dress last week (the one I was so excited about) and I’m actually on the fence about it. The lyocell blend feels silky and it’s cute, but I just don’t have “the feeling.” I’m going to try it on again this week, but I might exchange it for this BCBG “Chantal” dress. Isn’t it gorgeous?

Prep School

January 12, 2015 by jessica 20 Comments

January-Outfit-2v19

Last week’s wind chills brought Madison to -30 degrees. Schools were cancelled, my office was closed, and all I wanted to do was dive back under the covers and hibernate until spring. We ventured out on Sunday (a balmy 26 degrees) to take a few photos of what’s become my winter uniform. You might balk at my bare ankles (that Fran so affectionately calls “hussy ankles”), but I promise you that Wisconsin made my skin weirdly resistant to cold weather. If it’s not windy, not under zero degrees, and I’m not expected to be outside longer than it takes to scamper from the car, I’m showing a little skin. Scandalous.

In other news, I bought a new bag! I agonized between it and this mod canteen purse (ahem, first-world problems), but the more versatile option seemed like a better bet. I’m already daydreaming about bringing it on vacation. There’s plenty of room for my camera and for the little trinkets I collect throughout the day. (At risk of being dubbed a cat lady, Bacon was also pretty jazzed about the purchase.)

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
