Outfit | Fall Floral

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]T[/dropcap]his Ted Baker skirt was my first purchase for fall and it has already become one of my favorites. The dark floral print is stunning and the skirt is impeccably made with a crinoline lining to help keep it’s flouncy shape all day. Beyond that–and most importantly–I feel pretty and confident in it, which really should be the litmus test for any new wardrobe addition.

Outfit | Elie Tahari x DesigNation

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]A[/dropcap]long with the taxi print sweatshirt and graphic tees, this dress is one of the most literal representations of Elie Tahari’s New York City inspiration for his DesigNation line. It’s also one of the most charming pieces from the collection with a fit-and-flare silhouette and the NYC skyline printed along the hem. It reminded me so much of Kate Spade’s skirt from a few years back that I couldn’t help but play up the femininity with a pair of heels and a bow belt. I’m anxious to keep this dress in rotation when the temperatures finally fall and I can pair it with the collection’s neoprene and faux fur jacket (seen earlier this week) or a beautiful white wool coat like this one.

Outfit | Elie Tahari x DesigNation

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]W[/dropcap]ould you believe I’ve never been to New York? A trip to the city comes up each time we plan a vacation, but another destination always seems to capture my imagination by the time we’re ready to purchase plane tickets. (Truth be told, I’m a little nervous that once I visit, I’ll never want to head back to the Midwest again!)

Until we actually make plans to jet set to the city that never sleeps, I’m embracing the spirit of New York through Elie Tahari’s collaboration with DesigNation. If you’re not familiar with DesigNation, it’s a biannual collaboration from Kohl’s that brings a designer’s signature looks to an expanded audience with a fun twist: each collection is inspired by a different locale. (Next up: Milly in spring 2015 with a collection inspired by Capri, Italy.)

I teamed up with Kohl’s to share two looks incorporating pieces from the collection. I’m not one to run out and purchase a new head-to-toe ensemble, so I was pleased to discover Elie Tahari’s collection is filled with versatile items punctuated with subtle textures and luxe details. In short, the perfect way to update your wardrobe without sacrificing your signature look. The neoprene pieces are really the standouts of the collection and this jacket is by far my favorite item. The faux fur inset adds just the right amount of daytime glam. Check back on Wednesday to see this dress in action.

On an unrelated note, Julie Vos recently relaunched her website and I’m thrilled to style a few of my favorite pieces to celebrate the launch. I’ll talk about it more later this week, but if you’re antsy to expand your jewelry collection, use code bedknobsandbaubles for 20% off sitewide.

Review | Lo & Sons

September 16, 2014 by jessica 11 Comments

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]F[/dropcap]inding the perfect personal bag for in-flight essentials is a daunting task that leaves me feeling a bit like Goldilocks. There are plenty of bags that are too big, too small, too heavy, or too cumbersome, but not many that are just right–which I quickly learned after opting to use an L.L. Bean tote for our trip to Belgium. I spent half the flight checking and double checking to make sure nothing spilled over the open top and it was surprisingly heavy to carry through the airport. My next flight is going to much less stressful, thanks to the O.M.G. bag from Lo & Sons.

The O.M.G., an acronym for “Overnight Medium Gym” bag, is incredibly lightweight, water resistant, and has plenty of pockets for travel must-haves, including a padded laptop sleeve and a side pocket for your flats so the rest of your items don’t get dirty. I tend to be a light packer, but all of the items below fit inside with plenty of room for my camera, lenses, and a cribbage board (can’t leave home without it!).

Outfit | Slip Dress

September 3, 2014 by jessica Leave a Comment

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]I[/dropcap]’m not sure if my love of neutral colors and classic silhouettes was a result of the limitations of The French Wardrobe Challenge or if the challenge simply helped me identify those pieces as my favorites, but either way, I’m finding that my personal style is becoming easier to pinpoint with each season: classic cuts in well-made textiles, punctuated with interesting accessories and unexpected details.

At least that’s what I want it to be.

Thankfully a new season is the time to hone this newfound style M.O. and judging by the recent pins on my style inspiration board, I’m eager to reinvent my wardrobe and bring some of my summer staples into fall. I’m on the lookout for a cozy sweater, thick tights, ankle boots, and an incredible piece of jewelry to make this dress appropriate for weekend outings on upcoming cool, crisp days.

(If you’re curious, this photo was taken in Brussels on the path leading up to Halle Gate.)

Congrats to Jillian of Cornflake Dreams on winning the $150 gift card to spend on jewelry at KiraKira! I can’t wait to see what you pick out!

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
