Review | Jordana Paige Handbags

December 23, 2014 by jessica 5 Comments

JordanaPaigePurse-8

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]A[/dropcap] few weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to try out one of Jordana Paige’s new handbags: the Cora satchel. I tend to reach for smaller bags that barely hold my essentials, even if it means storing my keys in one of Dave’s pockets. So, a large bag was a welcome addition to my wardrobe! I adore how practical this one is. The top of the bag has access to two areas: a dedicated compartment for a tablet (which I actually used for the items I wanted fast access to, like my phone and card case) and a larger compartment that has a zippered pocket inside. Unlike many satchels, this wasn’t divided right in the middle. It had a larger area which gave my camera plenty of space and a thinner pocket to the side. What makes this bag even more unique is how versatile it is. It comes with a crossbody strap and, as you’ll see in the stock photo, there’s an exterior pocket that detaches to moonlight as a clutch. (Perfect for travel, right?) The bag is made of vegan leather and comes in three colors: dark green, dove grey, and dusty rose.

Wardrobe Workhorses

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]A[/dropcap]fter looking for my outfit posts this season, it has become painfully obvious that I have a few piece in my wardrobe that get a lot of use–and if they’re this prominent on that blog, I’d hate to admit how often I wear them the rest of the time! I suspect we all have pieces like that, though. They’re our favorites that we reach for when we proclaim there’s nothing to wear, pieces that still fit when we’re bloated, and staples that look great no matter how they’re styled. The following four items are my wardrobe workhorses:

[spacer]

GREY SHIFT DRESS

I bought my grey shift dress from J.Crew around six years ago and it still makes the rounds, which you’ve probably noticed, given that I’ve worn it frequently on the blog this season. It’s a lightweight wool that doesn’t wrinkle and the loose shape fits no matter how much I’ve indulged.

[spacer]

OVERSIZE CATEYE SUNGLASSES

Nothing hides tired eyes better than a pair of oversize sunglasses. A cateye shape lends the right amount of vintage charm.

[spacer]

BLACK CROSSBODY SATCHEL

I’d bring a clutch everywhere if it were up to me, but there are plenty of times I need to carry more than what fits in the palm of my hand. That’s where my crossbody satchel comes in. It’s a manageable size, yet holds more than you’d expect (I carried our DSLR in it on our trip to Belgium). I’m fond of the water-resistant Saffiano leather.

[spacer]

BLACK POINTED TOE FLATS

A simple black flat, devoid of embellishments mixes and matches with just about everything in my closet. A pointed toe elongates the leg and elevates the standard-issue ballet flat into an elegant, work-appropriate shoe that’s just as pretty on the weekend.

SHOPPING TIPS

It’s almost impossible to predict which pieces will get the most love, but there are a few guidelines that increase the likelihood that your new purchases will become the items you reach for year after year:

  1. Use your past purchases and your current wardrobe habits to guide new purchases. If you’re like me and you wear black pointed flats almost exclusively, try a pair in an unexpected color or pattern. Chances are that you’re smitten with the shape of the item and just a small change will update your look.
  2. Plan your purchases. I say this all the time, but carefully considering your purchases ensures each piece has a place in your wardrobe and lifestyle. None of my wardrobe workhorses were impulse purchases.
  3. Pick an item that’s versatile, but not boring. How many simple white shirts or basic black sweaters do you truly love? Probably not many. You’ll be more likely to get jazzed about an item that’s interesting. Even the smallest of details can pull at your heartstrings and make you fall in love with it each time you pull it out.

Playful Print

PlayfulPrint-3

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]T[/dropcap]his shirt makes me ridiculously happy and it’s not just because it matches my favorite pin. Paired with a short shift dress, it has the carefree ’60s vibe I’m fond of. And, what better way to embrace its playful side than at a nearby playground? Thankfully no children were around because one trip down the slide made me realize how short my skirt was and how cold plastic playground equipment could be!

Beetle Mania

BeetlePin-1

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]I[/dropcap]f you’ve been a longtime reader of my blog, you’ll remember how giddy I was to acquire this piece from the Coach x Tony Duquette collection. The lapis and malachite stick pin still remains a favorite in my jewelry box. I don’t wear it often, but that might have to change now that I’ve scored this beetle-print shirt by Tory Burch. It was hanging by its lonesome at Nordstrom Rack today and I was all too willing to bring it home to its sartorial sole mate.

Outfit | Fall Floral

October 13, 2014 by jessica 34 Comments

TBSkirt-1

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]T[/dropcap]his Ted Baker skirt was my first purchase for fall and it has already become one of my favorites. The dark floral print is stunning and the skirt is impeccably made with a crinoline lining to help keep it’s flouncy shape all day. Beyond that–and most importantly–I feel pretty and confident in it, which really should be the litmus test for any new wardrobe addition.

Buying tickets to the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit l Buying tickets to the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit last November seemed both reckless and naively hopeful. I’m so glad I went for it though, as our first fully vaccinated adventure has been the breath of fresh air we needed. (I’m also happy to report that most people are masked up walking outside, and there are plenty of social-distanced dining options in Chicago.)

I’d also like to point out that I’m embracing the middle part as not to let my Millennial show. 😉

I'm so excited for longer days and warm evenings o I'm so excited for longer days and warm evenings on the patio -- and this subscription to @winc couldn't haven't come at a better time to usher in the new season with wine in hand!

If you're unfamiliar with Winc, the California-based winery was founded in 2012 with the belief that wine should be more accessible. So, they've introduced an online membership experience that suggests wines based on your taste preferences making it a really fun way to try wine if you’re at all intimidated by an expansive wine aisle!

I know everyone loves wick trimmers for their cand I know everyone loves wick trimmers for their candles, but you're missing out if you don't have a taper shaver, too! It's an inexpensive gadget that can save you from forcing a candle into a holder and risking breakage — of either the holder or the candle itself. I linked to some options in today's blog post! (URL in bio.)
When we moved into our home three-and-a-half years When we moved into our home three-and-a-half years ago, Dave added an indoor security camera to our living room. I’ll be the first to admit that the option for 24/7 surveillance (which can, thankfully, be shut off automatically when you arrive home) was a little strange, but it’s absolutely worth the peace of mind that comes with a smart camera. When we’ve been away, we’ve checked in on the cat to see what he’s been up to and we’ve been able to verify that the person detected in our house was someone we lent a key to! We’ve since decided to relocate that one outdoors and were delighted to have the opportunity to partner with @ecobeehome to try out their SmartCamera as an indoor replacement. It was a natural fit as we already have – and love – an ecobee thermostat and this camera integrates seamlessly into the brand’s app. The camera has a 180-degree field of view that lets you track activity in your home, giving us a much wider view of the main floor than the other camera allowed. Privacy is still paramount as the camera uses WiFi and GPS to detect when family members are home, which shuts off the recording option. It’s also equipped with voice controls and Alexa, allowing you to connect with the technology you need for your household. And, while it’s not the most important aspect of a smart camera, the design of this one is *really* good.
