Review: Cynthia Jones Jewelry

Remember that episode of Sex and the City where Aiden proposed with a pear-shaped diamond and—gasp!—a yellow gold band? Carrie threw up and I totally understood where she was coming from.

Even if you’ve just started perusing this blog, you’ll know I’m over that. Ninety-five percent of my gems are gold tone, but the rest—the most precious pieces in my collection—are still silver and white gold.

And, much to my own surprise, I’ve been introducing silver into my everyday bauble lineup by way of this ah-mazing Cynthia Jones ring. (You’ll remember the New Mexico artisan from yesterday’s post.) It’s crafted from a ribbon of sterling, twirled around itself to form a ring and the quality is as impeccable as the design.

Thank you so much for the ring, Cynthia!

Review: Plum Pretty Sugar Pajamas

I’ve been looking for a pair of menswear-inspired pajamas and while I like pinstripes and plaids, I didn’t want a menswear-inspired pattern. I remembered seeing mentions of Plum Pretty Sugar on various blogs and found a sleepwear set that seemed to fit the bill. There’s a surprising lack of reviews on Plum Pretty Sugar products, so here are my thoughts:

  • I adore the feminine, vintage design.
  • It’s made of soft, crisp cotton that feels like a set of well-worn sheets.
  • Great attention to detail with piping along the edges and mother of pearl buttons.(Two extras are included.)
  • Pay attention to the size chart as the shortie set runs smaller than other items. It’s too bad that you can’t order the top and bottom in different sizes. I’m a size smaller on top and, as expected, the pajama shirt is looser than it needs to be.
  • Shipping was $7.50. It seems high for an item that came in an oversize envelope and weighs next to nothing.
  • Even though I followed the laundering instructions, the shorts shrunk along the banded hem. They’re now tighter at the hem than the rear and thighs causing them to ride up awkwardly. I wore them to bed last night to see if they’d stretch out to their original shape, but no luck.

Bottom Line: I’d consider another pair (these), but would line dry them. I’m pretty disappointed that the shorts shrunk so much.

I’m amazed by what Bacon will put up with.

Under the Sea

Even though we got returned from vacation two weeks ago, it’s still hard to get back into the swing of things. Going to work just isn’t as much fun as morning walks along the ocean and wearing my swimsuit under everything! To compensate, I’ve been reaching for these seaworthy accessories: gold boat shoes, coral-shaped earrings, and a scarf that reminds me of the sun reflecting off rippling waves.

FRAAS actually sent the scarf to me before we left for Charleston. The welcome travel companion is gauzy and lightweight (easy to pack!) and incredibly soft. As with most scarves, I used it as a makeshift blanket on the plane – an easy thing to do with its generous dimensions of 40 x 72 inches.

In the Know

April 24, 2013 by jessica Leave a Comment

I know there have been a lot of product posts this week, but I want to share one more that I’m raving about: Kushyfoot.

Kushyfoot carries an array of specialty socks that slip discreetly into a variety of shoe styles. I wore a pair of their ultra low-cut socks with my boat shoes last weekend, but my favorites are the padded styles with a little cushion under the ball of the foot. They’re are a godsend for event days when even the most comfortable pair of flats leave my feet achy and sore.

Disclaimer: Kushyfoot sent over a selection of products free of charge. I wasn’t obligated to post about them, but I wanted to share my positive experience with you.

Review: DITTO

April 23, 2013 by jessica Leave a Comment

Now that summer is right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to invest in a new pair of sunglasses. I always thought that an in-store visit was the only fool-proof way to find a flattering pair. And, really, that was the case until DITTO came along. DITTO is revolutionizing the way we shop for sunglasses by allowing customers to virtually try them on.

Before we get into what makes DITTO so unique, let’s just take a moment to admire the wide array of designer sunglasses available. There are classic standbys like Ray-Ban and Persol and adventurous designs from 3.1 Phillip Lim and Jason Wu. (If you’re looking for prescription frames, they have those too.)

Now that you’ve found a few favorites, it’s time to create your “DITTO.” With your webcam, take a video of yourself slowly moving your head from side to side. This allows you to virtually try on sunglasses from all angles. You can also try on styles side-by-side and send your DITTO to friends.

Fair warning: this is addictive. I spent nearly an hour trying on sunglasses. I tried classic aviators, retro bug-eyed pairs and this pair with Mickey Mouse ears, but I fell for the ’60s-inspired Chloe sunglasses.

You won’t have to wait long to enjoy your purchase. Shipping was incredibly fast. I ordered them on a Monday morning and received them Wednesday. Before I even peeked at my new sunglasses, I was struck by the high quality packaging. (Seriously, great packaging gets me every time.) The materials are heavy and well-made, there’s red edging on the white card stock, and they include an additional lens cloth.

If all went well, the sunglasses should be as flattering as they were online. But if you’re unhappy for any reason, they have a generous return policy. DITTO will accept returns for 90 days and they offer a two-year warranty.

Exclusive Discount! DITTO is extending a 30% discount off of anything with coupon code BEDKNOBS&BAUBLES30. (It’s a good excuse to buy a pair of rose-colored aviators.)

Disclosure: I received a pair of sunglasses courtesy of DITTO for purposes of this review. This doesn’t influence my opinion of the company.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
