My Favorite Dress in Austin

June 4, 2018 by jessica Leave a Comment

What to Wear in Austin, TX

This dress was undoubtedly my favorite thing to wear in Austin, so much so that I wore it our first full day in the city and then again another afternoon. I bought it last year from Urban Outfitters and the cotton dress is so breezy and, better yet, doesn’t need a bra. It’s amazing how much cooler you feel once you ditch a thick layer of foam! Now, I realize that not everyone is able to pull that off (it’s one of the perks of having a small chest), so I put together a roundup of some of my favorite pro-bra and anti-bra dresses from the retailer below. (I don’t know about you, but I never think to shop at Urban Outfitters until I need an inexpensive summer dress, and they’re a gold mine of hot-weather frocks. This one is my favorite of those linked in the widget below because of the pretty green and white pattern. I’m also a fan of this one.)

Happy Labor Day!

Labor Day Weekend 2017

I hope you’re having a wonderful Labor Day weekend with a few things planned for the unofficial last day of summer! Dave and I went to Lion’s Den Gorge Nature Preserve (see a pic here) yesterday for a hike with gorgeous views of Lake Michigan then headed to Port Washington to see the breakwater light (where this photo was snapped) and have a late lunch before heading back to Madison. It was the perfect way to spend Saturday. Today is all about taking it easy in town. I’ve been spray painting our vent grates white and I have a few more to do, we still have  outlets to switch out from almond/black to white, and shelves to paint for the closets. But chances are that we’ll just go for a bike ride around the lake and call it a day!

Loft Floral Tiered Dress & Ann Taylor Gretel Suede Slides

I rarely buy anything online without a discount — even if that means putting a beloved piece on the back burner until a promotional code lands in my inbox. And, while I’m usually on top of checking for discounts, sometimes those emails do go overlooked.  (It’s easy to miss the good stuff when we’re all getting hundreds of emails a day!) Fortunately, there’s a company called Wikibuy that’s making the process of saving money on your purchases even easier. Wikibuy offers a three-prong approach to saving individuals money. There’s a Chrome extension that finds lower prices from other sellers while you shop on Amazon and will also check to see where else the product is being sold and shows the price (including tax, shipping and minus any coupons that apply) for each of those locations. You can also search the site for products, which will show you all the places the item is being sold and what your cost would be on that site. Lastly, the extension will also test coupon codes automatically at checkout and will find online rebates from participating retailers.

When Wikibuy reached out to me a couple of weeks ago asking if I’d like to collaborate, I jumped at the chance to try their site. I challenged myself to find a discount for the LOFT dress I had been crushing on for a few weeks. Not only did Wikibuy alert me when the dress had a $25 discount, it also found a code for free shipping off of a $50 order. (Much better than LOFT’s standard $125 minimum for free shipping, which just means I buy extra sizes and “ride-along items” to return later.) It’s definitely worth giving it a shot if you’re an avid online shopper like myself! And if you’re in the market for an easy, summer-to-fall dress that you can wear on weekends and to the office: this is it. It’s such a fun little dress to wear!

Loft Garland Mixed Media Cami and Loft Garland Fluid Drawstring Shorts

It’s moving week! And, as I’m sure you’ve guessed it, there won’t be a lot of content on the blog — again — as we finish up packing and move into our house on Thursday! It’s been a whirlwind lately and I can’t wait to finally be living in just one spot. We carved out some time for fun this weekend and headed down to Chicago to explore the city for a couple of days. We really didn’t do a whole lot other than wander around and pop into some of our beloved bars and restaurants. We added Homeslice to our growing list of favorites. The place looks like a log cabin and they serve your beer in a koozie! (Our server let us take a couple of them home!) On the sartorial front, I’ve been living in pajama-esque clothing lately. It’s been far too hot for anything form-fitting and clingy! This impulse-buy from LOFT is one of my favorite ensembles lately. The cami and shorts look cute with other items, but they’re better together as a more practical take on a romper. (The cami runs true to size for your bust, but the midsection is flowy, and the shorts run large.)

A small moment of peace from the past weekend. I A small moment of peace from the past weekend.

I feel like I’ve been doomscrolling since the news broke of SCOTUS’ decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. My emotions run the gamut from sadness to frustration to unadulterated rage. I’m deeply disgusted by conservatives and evangelicals, but especially by liberals who supported Bernie Sanders and refused to vote for Hillary Clinton at such a crucial moment in our history. Did you know that 12% of Sanders’ primary election supporters voted for Trump in the general election? In Wisconsin alone, 51,000 of them voted for Trump — a state Trump would win by just 22,000 votes.

Your vote matters. It matters in national elections, statewide elections, and local elections. It’s crucial that Democrats organize as strategically as conservatives did and restore reproductive rights.

In the meantime, donate your time, talent, or treasure to help those facing an unwanted pregnancy. @thecut has a great list on their site with organizations to support in states likely to prohibit abortion. I’ve donated to @plannedparenthoodwi.
Reveal day is finally here! It’s been a long pro Reveal day is finally here! It’s been a long process that started back in April 2020 with a kitchen ceiling leak that was attributed to water leaking from our tub faucet and working its way through the floor and into the kitchen. Our bathroom was never anything to look at (before photos on the feed), but the leak really accelerated our plans for a full bathroom renovation when timelines — and budgets — allowed. It feels a bit surreal to have it done and I don’t think I’ll ever stop admiring it whenever I walk past!

Head to the blog today to read about two headaches that came at the tail end of our main bathroom remodel.

I am just the happiest! I keep looking at this bat I am just the happiest! I keep looking at this bathroom and thinking how lucky we are that we were able to do this! It wasn’t always easy to navigate the stressful moments, but the end result is worth it. I feel like I’m at a luxury hotel every time I shower! (And it sure beats showering with the spiders in our [basically unfinished] basement bathroom. It was like camping in our own home for the past six weeks — and I very much hate camping!)

The rest of the shower tile will be installed on Monday and then they’ll starting laying the floor tile. I can’t wait!
