Lovely Linen

Garnet Hill Essential Linen Shirt

It’s no surprise that summer is my favorite season, and every spring day that has even a hint of something warmer in the forecast has me reaching for summer staples to debut, like this breezy linen tunic from Garnet Hill. I’ve had the opportunity to work with Garnet Hill on a couple of posts over the past few months (here and here) and I’m always delighted with the brand’s classic cuts and high quality pieces. This particular piece is crafted from flax grown and handpicked in France, and promises to get softer with every wash. It’s such a classic piece that pairs well with other closet mainstays, like denim shorts, but will look just as chic over a swimsuit when the weather really heats up!

Also, can we take a moment to admire just how fantastic and on-trend this little bag is?! I picked it up at Target after seeing it on Cathy’s Instagram Story. It’s really soft for being faux leather, and I can’t get enough of the oversize ring handle. (The cross-body strap is removable.)

Time for Spring

Welly Merck Watch Review

This week has just been slipping away from me! I’ve barely had enough time to take care of my priority list at work, let alone blog in the evening! So, it’s especially fitting that today’s post is all about the watch brand that I’m currently obsessed with: Welly Merck. Welly Merck was founded by a couple that met on a trip to Italy: Merck, an American man who was born into a steel artisan family, and Welly, a Swiss woman who came from a traditional watch-making family. After a transcontinental romance, Merck eventually moved to Switzerland to be with Welly and the two merged their artisan skills to launch a watch brand commemorating their love story.

The timepiece these two lovebirds created is absolutely stunning! If you saw my Instagram story last week, you know I was already over-the-moon with the company based on the packaging alone. I mean, a turquoise gift box with a magenta ribbon?! Be still my beating heart! Of course, the piece nestled inside that box was even more beautiful. I chose the “Classic Chicago” design with a gold-plated mesh band and a white face. The watch has a nice weight to it that feels luxurious rather than heavy, and the flexible mesh band and clasp allows you to size the watch without going to a jeweler. (I have tiny wrists and I always have to get links taken out of watch bands. I love that this one can be easily adjusted for my pint-sized wrists.) My favorite aspect of the watch is that the substantial mesh band looks like a luxe piece of jewelry that you can stack with your other beloved pieces. It also comes in rose gold and silver, allowing you to pick the piece that will coordinate with your collection. You know I’m all about my gold costume jewels, so I felt I’d get the most mileage out of the gold version. Although, that rose gold watch was awfully tempting! (There are also leather straps available if metal isn’t your thing.)

The watch is an investment for many budgets, coming in at $265. While I received a complimentary sample, I do feel like the quality is in line with that price point. It feels — and looks — more expensive than it is. Plus, after a week of wear, it seems like it’ll be scratch-resistant, keeping it picture-perfect for years to come.

Staying at four Graduate Hotel properties last yea Staying at four Graduate Hotel properties last year solidified my love of the brand. Each is located in a college town and the brand does a wonderful job bringing in each city’s personality by way of thoughtful design finishes and kitschy details. In recent years, the brand has done a summer promotion to attract travelers to university towns during a typically quiet time of the year. This year was no different. For 30 hours in May, Graduate sold $30 rooms for the month of July. (Each person was limited to one booking.) We thought about going somewhere outside of the Midwest, but with a trip to Europe scheduled for this fall, we opted to stay closer to home and choose a location that we could drive to. And with that, a trip to Evanston, IL was on the books.

I didn’t know much about Evanston attractions, but I figured we’d find enough things to fill 48 hours. If not, Chicago was only a short train ride away. I’m happy to report that my low expectations were unfounded and I was won over by the city’s charming gardens, quaint neighborhoods, and access to Lake Michigan. It’s not to say that there’s a lot to do in the city. There isn’t, at least in the summer. But it has cute pockets all over that make a stay in the suburbs worthwhile.

Find a list of what we did in Evanston on the blog. (Use the search bar and type in "Evanston" to find it.)

A few moments from the weekend. A few moments from the weekend.
A small moment of peace from the past weekend. I A small moment of peace from the past weekend.

I feel like I’ve been doomscrolling since the news broke of SCOTUS’ decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. My emotions run the gamut from sadness to frustration to unadulterated rage. I’m deeply disgusted by conservatives and evangelicals, but especially by liberals who supported Bernie Sanders and refused to vote for Hillary Clinton at such a crucial moment in our history. Did you know that 12% of Sanders’ primary election supporters voted for Trump in the general election? In Wisconsin alone, 51,000 of them voted for Trump — a state Trump would win by just 22,000 votes.

Your vote matters. It matters in national elections, statewide elections, and local elections. It’s crucial that Democrats organize as strategically as conservatives did and restore reproductive rights.

In the meantime, donate your time, talent, or treasure to help those facing an unwanted pregnancy. @thecut has a great list on their site with organizations to support in states likely to prohibit abortion. I’ve donated to @plannedparenthoodwi.
Reveal day is finally here! It’s been a long pro Reveal day is finally here! It’s been a long process that started back in April 2020 with a kitchen ceiling leak that was attributed to water leaking from our tub faucet and working its way through the floor and into the kitchen. Our bathroom was never anything to look at (before photos on the feed), but the leak really accelerated our plans for a full bathroom renovation when timelines — and budgets — allowed. It feels a bit surreal to have it done and I don’t think I’ll ever stop admiring it whenever I walk past!
