Weekend Reading

Weekend Reading 06.16.17

It’s our last weekend of R&R before we’re homeowners! I have packing tape in bulk and piles of boxes to pack, but we’ll likely spend as much time as possible this weekend lounging by the pool and going for walks. We’re not actually moving out of our apartment until the end of July, so we may as well relax before we need to spend every weeknight and weekend working on the house. In the meantime, I’ve spent hours looking at furniture and decor to figure out what direction our house will go in. We love a lot of Scandinavian and mid-century modern pieces, punctuated with unexpected, cheeky or glam details (think brass pineapples, a tufted bench, or this print that I want to put above a bar cabinet). I’ve jokingly dubbed my style “Glamdinavian,” but it totally fits.

WEEKEND READING:

  • Are you washing your hair often enough?
  • Kayu partnered with Net-a-Porter to create exclusive fringe totes. I love the turquoise one!
  • How perfect are these locations for Wes Anderson films?!
  • Reimagining iconic art subjects in the modern world.
  • To say that I’m obsessed with these earrings would be an understatement.
  • Tips to help yourself become more of a morning person.
  • Itching to book a trip abroad? Megan shared her guide to Rome and Fran shared travel tips for Ireland.
  • Shimmering fabric and tassel trim make this top a showstopper.
  • Zendaya dances through nine decades of fashion in 90 seconds.
  • This cactus-themed party is too cute.

FIVE UNDER $50:

  • Pink satin slides for $20.
  • I just placed an order for this dress in the dark floral print. I found reviews indicating that it runs large, which should make for a comfortable, breezy dress on hot days. Plus, the color scheme will transition to fall nicely. (I know, I know. Let’s not talk about autumn yet.)
  • A pair of statement-making gold drop earrings to wear with all of your summer dresses.
  • Tory Burch’s nautical rope-print scarf is being price matched right now.
  • This pinstriped peekaboo-shoulder top is preppy perfection.

ICYMI:

  • You have a few days left to enter to win a new phone case! Good luck!
  • Wearing a striped dress lakeside.
  • A jewelry designer who will help you achieve your dreams of wearing oversize gemstones without being the heir to a fortune.
  • The items I can’t stop thinking about this week.

Have a wonderful weekend!

A small moment of peace from the past weekend. I A small moment of peace from the past weekend.

I feel like I’ve been doomscrolling since the news broke of SCOTUS’ decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. My emotions run the gamut from sadness to frustration to unadulterated rage. I’m deeply disgusted by conservatives and evangelicals, but especially by liberals who supported Bernie Sanders and refused to vote for Hillary Clinton at such a crucial moment in our history. Did you know that 12% of Sanders’ primary election supporters voted for Trump in the general election? In Wisconsin alone, 51,000 of them voted for Trump — a state Trump would win by just 22,000 votes.

Your vote matters. It matters in national elections, statewide elections, and local elections. It’s crucial that Democrats organize as strategically as conservatives did and restore reproductive rights.

In the meantime, donate your time, talent, or treasure to help those facing an unwanted pregnancy. @thecut has a great list on their site with organizations to support in states likely to prohibit abortion. I’ve donated to @plannedparenthoodwi.
Reveal day is finally here! It’s been a long pro Reveal day is finally here! It’s been a long process that started back in April 2020 with a kitchen ceiling leak that was attributed to water leaking from our tub faucet and working its way through the floor and into the kitchen. Our bathroom was never anything to look at (before photos on the feed), but the leak really accelerated our plans for a full bathroom renovation when timelines — and budgets — allowed. It feels a bit surreal to have it done and I don’t think I’ll ever stop admiring it whenever I walk past!

Head to the blog today to read about two headaches that came at the tail end of our main bathroom remodel.

I am just the happiest! I keep looking at this bat I am just the happiest! I keep looking at this bathroom and thinking how lucky we are that we were able to do this! It wasn’t always easy to navigate the stressful moments, but the end result is worth it. I feel like I’m at a luxury hotel every time I shower! (And it sure beats showering with the spiders in our [basically unfinished] basement bathroom. It was like camping in our own home for the past six weeks — and I very much hate camping!)

More photos to come!

The rest of the shower tile will be installed on Monday and then they’ll starting laying the floor tile. I can’t wait!
