Behind the Baubles: Anna Davern

June 15, 2017 by jessica 1 Comment

Behind the Baubles interview with designer Anna Davern

Maybe it’s just me, but every now and then I daydream about being bedecked in gemstones the size of my palm. This fantasy usually crops up when we’re traveling and admiring the royal jewels of a country, but now it’s becoming closer to reality with Anna Davern’s jewelry. Sort of.

Australia-based Anna Davern is one of the most innovative jewelry designers I’ve come across recently. She creates trompe l’oeil earrings that resemble staggeringly expensive, oversize precious gemstones by using a sublimation printing technique on old biscuit tins and tin trays. The end results are unexpectedly gorgeous statement earrings that don’t need to be reserved for special occasions – or protected by armed guards!

Weekend Reading

June 9, 2017 by jessica 2 Comments

Cynthia Rowley Chestnut Hill Swing Dress

We’re in the final steps of the home-buy process. All that’s left ahead of us is the confirmation that the agreed-upon repairs are done, the final walk through, and then closing day. It’s hard to believe that after a year and change of looking, we have just 11 days to go until we’re homeowners! Though, I get the impression that that’s when the real work begins and the rest of our summer will be spent working on the house! We’re planning to spend most of this weekend packing things we don’t need right now (like winter clothes and books), taking breaks at the pool, and putting our grill to good use. I hope you have a wonderfully relaxing weekend!

Weekend Reading:

  • It’s Anthro Day, which means that AnthroPerks members get 20% off full-price purchases. Sign up free here and then get shopping. I’m in love with this tassel keychain and this jumpsuit.
  • Serve vegan Greek nachos at your next soiree. (Or just eat them yourself for dinner. No judgment.)
  • Add a touch of glam to your kitchen with the most chic measuring spoon and cup sets you’ll find anywhere.
  • The amazing amount of work that artists do to colorize vintage black and white photographs.
  • This vibrant fit-and-flare jersey dress is the perfect way to freshen up your summer work wardrobe. The print is also available in a pair of statement-making palazzo pants.
  • In-flight beauty tips from those who know it best.
  • DIY a color-blocked, pom-pom trim basket.
  • This necklace is everything. (It’s also expensive, but a girl can dream.)
  • With busy days and evening events, vegetables have been missing from my diet over the last week. That needs to change starting today. I’ve bookmarked this list of 18 summery salads for side dishes this season.
  • This article about the Apostle Islands made me so happy to read. Visiting Bayfield every summer is one of my favorite childhood memories. (I grew up in nearby Ashland, Wisc.) I take Lake Superior’s proximity for granted, but we should really plan a long weekend trip up north this summer.

ICYMI:

  • A budget-friendly floral dress that I’ve worn twice this week.
  • This week’s covetable collection takes a moody turn.
  • Enter to win a new phone case! (I recommend the pineapple print version that I snagged!)
  • Relaxing poolside.

Win a Phone Case from Caseable!

June 7, 2017 by jessica 16 Comments

Caseable Pineapple-Print iPhone Case

A vacation isn’t in the cards right now, so when Caseable reached out to see if I’d like to outfit my phone with a new accessory, I opted for the next best thing: an iPhone case bedecked in a tropical print to give me a bit of a mental escape from the home-buying process!

Caseable has roots in both Brooklyn and Berlin, and offers hand-crafted, custom covers for smartphones, laptops, e-readers, and tablets. You can either customize your case or browse hundreds of designs by various artists. While you can browse designs by category (i.e. animals or architecture), there isn’t a search option to find cases with a particular motif; you’ll need to set aside time to sift through the site. Once you spot your beloved design, you’ll click through to select what type of electronic you’re looking to dress up and you’ll be presented with shopping options. The smart phone hard cases are a great deal at just $24.90, especially when you’re looking at the $40 mark for just about any trendy phone case, with a $6.90 shipping fee within the United States. The case itself is sturdy and slim fitting. There’s a small lip over the edge of the phone to give your screen a much-needed buffer in case of a tumble, and the case is lightly textured for added grip.

I’m thrilled to share that one reader will receive a smartphone hard case in the print of his or her choice! Just head over to Caseable to peruse the designs (Cat Coquillette’s work is so fun!) and complete the giveaway prompts at the bottom of this post to enter. As always, there are extra entries for supporting this blog and our partner brand on social media. The giveaway is open to those with a mailing address in the US, CA, AU, and Europe. Good luck!

While I knew the house had potential, it was hard to look past some of the owner’s “design” choices. Though, it looks like the room was destined to have a warm-toned quilt. 😂

P.S. @schoolhouse just released new colors of their popular Stillwater Floral Quilt!

And, for those interested, I’ve linked my bedroom items here: https://liketk.it/5iC8R

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
