Weekend Links on Bedknobs & Baubles

Happy weekend! We’re in for another dreary weekend here in Madison, but that just makes it feel fall-like as we cozy up at home with comfort food. (I made this last night. It’s one of our fall and winter favorites.) We are going to the Badger football game tonight and then meeting up with friends on Sunday to watch the Brewers game. All of this makes me seem like a bigger sports fan than I am. I like the social aspect of sporting events, but I couldn’t care less about the sport itself! I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing weekend!

Weekend Links:

  • Banksy art self-destructs at auction.
  • If you love these loafers, now is the time to snag them with a rare discount offer. (I ordered my size and a half size up to try. Most reviews say they stretch out, but I didn’t think that would be the case and preferred the half size larger. They’ve been incredibly comfortable and you can wear discreet loafer socks with them, too.)
  • Pumpkin and pecan scones with maple and caramel drizzle.
  • Spooky cocktails for your Halloween soiree.
  • Why we say “O.K.”
  • Did you know Dr. Dre’s “Next Episode” samples this song? (We heard the original at a cocktail lounge in Seattle, and I got a bit too excited about hearing one of my hip hop favorites … and then Dave whispered “settle down; it’s not the song you think it is.” Haha.)
  • I’m so excited for Blair’s collection with Nordstrom!
  • Um, Bacon needs this, right? (Pet costumes crack me up.)
  • Is “cost per like” the new “cost per wear?”
  • Creepy ghost stories from Reddit.
  • This coppery color is the perfect manicure option for fall.

Finds Under $50:

  • I just love this preppy plaid skirt, which is 40% off with code FALLFEST.
  • A pastel plaid scarf brightens up chilly days.
  • Bold colorful stripes make this turtleneck surprisingly versatile.
  • Modern, eye-catching earrings.
  • If you need a clear bag for stadiums this fall, here’s one that’s cheap and looks better than most.

Earlier This Week:

  • An easy outfit for exploring a new city.
  • This week’s most coveted finds. (And I may have ordered the coat…)
  • What’s on my radar this October.

On My Radar

WEARING

If you saw my post yesterday, you may have noticed these Vince sneakers. I purchased them during the recent Shopbop sale and I have no idea how I went this long without owning a pair. We’ve all seen them on countless bloggers, but personally, I didn’t see the hype for something that looked like a pair of Vans slip-ons. Well, I get it now. They are ridiculously comfortable and are undoubtedly the most chic pair of sneakers I own. I ordered them in my regular size and a half size smaller as recommended; my regular size fit the best.

READING

I used to be such a bookworm (heck, one of my two majors is in English) and fell out of that habit in recent years. I’m trying to get back into the groove by making it more of a priority, starting with Calypso by David Sedaris. The book garnered criticism for being darker than his other collections of essays. I disagree. Sure, there are mentions of getting older and failing health, but it’s done with that type of poignant humor Sedaris is so skilled at. (I’m roughly two-thirds of the way through, so I’ll let you know if it ends up being awful at the end.) I’d love to hear your book recommendations. I like collections of humorous essays for their easily digestible nature when I don’t have a lot of time. I’m also into psychologically uncomfortable works. (Ian McEwan is my favorite author and I’m behind on a few of his recent works, so I’ll be turning to those next.)

USING

I recently added this Kiehl’s vitamin C serum to my nighttime routine. I’ve been using it for roughly three weeks and it has done wonders for my complexion. My skin feels softer in the morning and my overall complexion has improved. (I layer my regular night moisturizer on top of it.) I don’t think it’s doing much for my forehead wrinkles (apparently I was too expressive when I was younger), but I’m going to take a photo sometime this weekend as an “almost-before” image to compare to an “after” picture in a couple of months. For me, it’s impossible to notice those gradual changes.

PLANNING

Dave was close to reaching silver status with United, so we added another trip to this year’s itinerary to make it to that milestone; we’re going to New York City for a few days at the end of November into early December. I’ve never been to the city, so I welcome any and all must-dos for a first-time trip! I’m also very excited to see the city decked out in holiday cheer. A couple that we’re friends with is going to be in the city at the same time, so we’ll meet up with them at night for drinks but will largely be on our own during the day to sightsee.

HYGGE-ING

Cold weather is fast approaching and we’re making the most of these fall days to get our home in order before the chill really sets in. As you may have noticed on Instagram stories, our dining room table arrived (so gorgeous!) as did the chairs we picked out (which are passable quality, but a lot cheaper than buying the real Danish version — which I want eventually). I can’t tell you how excited I am to have meals at our new table! To add to a cozy, hygge vibe, I’ve been all about candles. I bought a couple of brass candlesticks at Totokaelo in Seattle and I purchased this candle at another store, which has the most perfect fall and winter fragrance that isn’t overwhelmingly rustic.

HALLOWEEN-ING

First of all, two faux verbs shouldn’t be allowed in a post. Forgive me. October is my busiest month at work with our annual expo and Halloween always seems to sneak up on me. It seems that once the event is over, I turn around and the holiday is right there — and completely unplanned for. Not this year. I bought some of these adorable (and insanely affordable) LED-lit pumpkins last year that I’ll be bringing out this weekend, and I added a few of these posable skeletons to have climbing up our banister. Last year, we put out a faux spider web on our porch … which was soon covered with real insects caught in the web, so we’ll pass on that this year. As for a costume, I need ideas! I went as Little Red Riding Hood last year — a costume pulled together with the help of Amazon Prime. The gingham dress and basket could be repurposed into a Dorothy ensemble, but I’m not really feeling that this year. Do you dress up?

Weekend Links on Bedknobs & Baubles

Happy Friday! I can’t exactly be relieved that it’s the weekend, considering we just got back from our Seattle trip late Wednesday night, but we’re off again for an overnight trip to Milwaukee. We both applied for Global Entry and our interviews are scheduled for Friday afternoon in the city, so we figured we’d make the most of it and make it into a mini trip. (We definitely don’t travel often enough internationally to warrant Global Entry, but it comes with TSA PreCheck and we each have a credit card that reimburses the fees.) After that, I’m looking forward to spending the rest of the weekend at home after we get back on Saturday. There’s a noticeable autumnal chill in the air, and I have a laundry list of house projects I want to get done before the real cold arrives! I hope you have a lovely weekend!

Weekend Links:

  • Key moments from Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford’s senate hearing. (I’m writing this on Thursday night, and I can’t adequately explain how worried I am that tomorrow’s confirmation hearing will go Kavanaugh’s way. Ford has absolutely nothing to gain by coming forward and sharing her recount of that harrowing moment. I genuinely believe her. And to the Republicans who don’t, there’s got to be someone — anyone — to confirm who won’t find himself or herself in the midst of a controversy. Why dig your heels in to prove a partisan point?)
  • Transform an empty wall near your door into an entryway.
  • Are online waitlists a scam?
  • A menswear-inspired shrunken cardigan that looks cute enough to wear as a shirt.
  • Nextdoor is the most ridiculous perk that has come from having a house. If you’re not familiar with the Twitter account @bestofnextdoor, you are missing out. It’s also strangely reassuring to know that neighbors in all cities are crazy.
  • Chicago is getting the world’s largest permanent digital art installation.
  • Tips on how to mix patterns the right way from textile designer Rebecca Atwood.
  • It’s time to look for a new fall jacket. I love this cropped buffalo plaid motorcycle jacket for an urban take on a northern classic.
  • Six ways to raise your confidence at work.
  • Would you pay for an $80 crystal water bottle? (That piece links to a small study exploring the placebo effect of crystals, which I found interesting.)
  • Autumn calls for apple cider cocktails.

Finds Under $50:

  • I have never had the desire to wear something from Abercrombie & Fitch, but this sweater is awfully tempting.
  • Almond-toe loafers that are less expensive alternative to this pair.
  • A goldenrod blouse is such a pretty option for fall.
  • Prefer pattern? How about this floral print option?
  • Charming isn’t the first word that would come to mind when describing dish rags … and then these happened.

Earlier This Week:

  • What I bought in September.
  • Snapshots from Seattle.

Seattle Bound + Early Weekend Links

Weekend Links on Bedknobs & Baubles

We’re off to Washington today for my brother’s wedding on Saturday. I’ve never been to the state before so when news of my brother’s upcoming nuptials came, we jumped at the chance to extend the trip by a few days on either side of the “I dos” to explore Seattle. As always, if you have any travel recommendations, I’d love to hear ’em! I’ll be sharing snapshots from our adventure on Instagram and will be back here on the blog on Wednesday.

Weekend Links:

  • Things to keep in mind when renovating a historic house.
  • Don’t flush your contact lenses.
  • These farro bowls with lamb meatballs sound amazing.
  • Can we take a moment to admire the amazing heels on these shoes?
  • Join Apartment Therapy’s “September Sweep” to banish clutter in your home.
  • Saying goodbye to Racked with a roundup of their best stories and essays.
  • An interview with Stan Smith himself.
  • I’m naturally a morning person, and I know plenty of night owls who aren’t appreciative of my exuberance in the a.m. If you’d like to become more of an early bird, here are some tips.
  • Seven trends for fall.
  • I’m awfully familiar with the stress-induced cry. Here are tips on how to cope with that teary onslaught and — hopefully — keep the tears at bay.

Finds Under $50:

  • This stoneware vase is such a beautiful shape. (I’m sure I’ll be adding it to my next Target order.)
  • A pretty sleeveless top that you could definitely wear to work.
  • Pair cheeky gingham socks with loafers and cuffed jeans this fall.
  • A knit sweater to spend all weekend in.
  • A long, cozy cardigan is a must to transition some of your favorite summer dresses to fall weather.
  • These resin earrings are stunning, especially in green.

Earlier This Week:

  • I’m crazy about the pink and burgundy color combination in this week’s roundup.
  • Heading to Portland? I finally shared snapshots and travel recommendations from our trip.

Weekend Links on Bedknobs & Baubles

My goodness! This week — today especially — has been brutal. Anyone else? Even with the shortened week, I’m thankful that it’s finally Friday and I can give myself permission to neglect my responsibilities for a few days. I need it. I also need the happy hour with friends that we’re skipping off to shortly!

Weekend Links:

  • Eight things you might be spending too much money on, and tips to trim those costs.
  • Save 20% on framed art at Minted this weekend with code FRAMES18. I have this one in the living room and I’ve been thinking about this one for our dining room. I also love this, this, and this.
  • Tips on how to become an efficient packer.
  • The rules of white bedding. (Now that I’ve invested in luxe linen sheets, I need to keep them pristine!)
  • I haven’t been this excited about a Kate Spade collection in a long time. I will be purchasing this sweater vest.
  • How to choose a paint color.
  • I know this isn’t the most exciting fall/winter purchase, but now is a good time to snag a versatile black merino turtleneck. This machine-washable version sold out fairly quickly last year, and I was bummed that I wasn’t able to buy a replacement for my old one before the season was over. I find that my regular size is a bit too snug, so you’ll want to order a couple sizes to try.
  • Stylish pet accessories? I’m in.
  • Thirty-one new shows to watch this fall.
  • An emerging science can help you make a big decision.

Finds Under $50:

  • I’m loving the newest colors of this classic striped tee. I recently purchased it in the multi-stripe and I already own the navy one.
  • A lightweight quilted jacket.
  • If you liked the dress I wore here, you can now snag it on sale.
  • Loving the look of vinyl totes, but not the elevated price tag of the best-looking ones? Try this.
  • A pretty, work-appropriate blouse.
  • A versatile cardigan that comes in 10 colors.
  • A tortoiseshell handle makes this tote feel more expensive than it is.

Earlier This Week:

  • What’s on my radar this month.
  • The week’s most coveted items.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
