A Few of My Favorite Things | 2023

December 29, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

Truly my favorite purchases of the year were adopting Lily, my membership to the pottery studio, and the money we spent on traveling — but I’m not above liking objects, too! 😉 Each year, I like to reflect back on our annual purchases and identify the items that brought the most joy. Here are nine standouts from 2023.

East Fork “The Mug” – A pair of East Fork mugs was actually my very first purchase of the year and I still look forward to having my morning latte in them. It has such a nice weight and I love the satin-finish of the glaze against the clay. I bought a second pair in Henri’s Red, their seasonal color, this holiday season. You can get $20 off your first purchase with this link. (I don’t receive a benefit from sharing this link; it’s just a fun way to introduce you to the brand.) The mug really kicked off a love for East Fork and I bought the popcorn bowl to use as a serving piece and the cake plates for appetizers. They’re just as lovely as the mug, but I’m paying homage to the piece that started the collection.

Margaux “The Demi” ballet flats – I’m a diehard fan of ballet flats and I adore that the classic is back “in” right now. I had read so many good things about Margaux flats and finally splurged on a black pair. Oh my goodness, I had been missing out! These mold so perfectly to your foot and the cord bow is actually adjustable so you can cinch the top to customize the fit and keep your heel from sliding out. They’re just so beautiful and I’m planning on getting another color next year.

Schoolhouse Electric “Bond” lamp – After six years of tiny Target bedside lamps, we upgraded to quality lamps and it immediately made me feel like more of an adult. They’re a great size next to a king bed and, like everything at Schoolhouse, impeccably made. I really like the mix of glass, metal, and wood.

Scrub Daddy sponge – This is the newest addition to my “love list.” Dave’s parents gave us one in our Christmas stocking and it really is kind of amazing. It’s rigid in cold water, but softens in warm water so that it’s gentle on surfaces. Plus, the dopey smile just makes me happy. Big fan.

West Elm classic linen pillow covers in natural/slate – I’m becoming less and less enamored with West Elm. I think that many of their products are cheaply made and aren’t worth the elevated price — and after my “machine washable” curtains shrunk about 12″, I’m no longer going to be a customer. However, I bought these linen pillow covers before the “incident.” They hold up well and I like the contrast stitching on the edges. I use these pillow inserts (22″ square) in them.

Tissue Box Covers (this and this) – I feel like everyone on my Instagram feed got fed up with ugly tissue boxes this year — myself included. The two linked here fit around a Costco-sized box of Kleenex. I like the one with the wood top more, but I use the white woven ones upstairs in the bedroom.

Schoolhouse Electric “Stillwater Floral” quilt in auburn – I fell for this pattern when it was released a year ago and added it to our home in the spring. It’s perfect for summer and doesn’t leave you overheated like a down comforter would. It’s also generously sized so there’s no fighting over the covers! It’s such a timeless piece.

Ruby Coffee Roasters coffee beans – We bought an espresso machine at the beginning of the pandemic and it continues to be one of my favorite items in the house. This year, we started ordering Ruby coffee beans and use them pretty much exclusively. We keep them fresh in this canister.

Thuma bed – Refreshing our bedroom was one of our top priorities for 2023 and it started with a new bedframe. We wanted a platform bed that was made of solid wood and, ideally, under $2,500. After months of research and browsing furniture stores, we opted for Thuma. It’s always a gamble with an online-only retailers, but they had a generous trial period making it feel less risky. The bed is beautiful in person and was easy to put together.

On the Right Foot: A Classic Ring, What American Girl Dolls Say About Your Decorating Style, Green Subway Tile & More!

December 18, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

I’ve struggled to get into the holiday spirit this year and it wasn’t until our annual holiday trip to Chicago last week that I started to feel some of the excitement of the season. Above are a few snapshots from our two-night visit to the Windy City: the historic pool at the InterContinental, a tinsel-covered tree at Rainbo Club, and the city’s Christmas tree.

For those lucky enough to have unique architectural features in their homes, here’s a useful guide on painting them.

A lighthearted read: What your American Girl doll says about your decorating style.

Stocking stuffers under $25.

I made these Italian holiday cookies last week. They’re cake-like and easy to make. Plus, they keep well. The recipe makes six dozen, so freeze half to enjoy later if you don’t have an upcoming cookie party to attend.

This rendition of each type of person at a dinner party made me laugh.

Tips for making better New Year’s resolutions.

What I bought and loved last month.

I tried on this ring last week and fell in love with it. I’m waiting to buy it until we know we’re done with holiday travel. Nothing is worse than packages arriving as soon as you hit the road!

Making a strong case for green subway tile.

Enjoy the week!

On the Right Foot: East Fork Pottery On Sale, Eye-Whitening Drops that Work, a Damage-Free Way to Hang Garland & More!

November 27, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

Recent Moments: the most perfect ballet flats (they’re cushioned!); Thanksgiving prep; and finally getting back to the pottery studio after a bit of a hiatus.

I’m team #RealTree for Christmas. Here’s the best time to buy one.

East Fork’s holiday sale is live with 20% off and free shipping. It’s the best sale they do all year, so stock up on mugs for gifts or treat yourself to some new dishes. I bought a pair of red mugs and eight cake plates in the eggshell glaze. (After hosting Thanksgiving, I realized a needed more small appetizer plates.)

Now that the air is dry, I’ve been waking up with red eyes. These eye drops brighten within minutes.

I’m planning to make this cranberry rum punch this holiday season.

Shall we all make breaking up with fast fashion our collective resolution for the new year?

Did you see this brilliant way to hang a doorway garland? We have arched doorways on our first floor, so it won’t work for us, but those with standard door frames should try it!

I make this cookie recipe every year and it’s a hit! (Along with my family’s sugar cookie recipe, of course.)

Looking for an easy appetizer? I made this spinach artichoke dip that goes right into a slow cooker.

I just ordered this sweater to try. The deep v-neck looks like it’ll be feminine and flattering.

If you’re also starting to plan your travel schedule for 2024, here’s a list of places to keep on your radar.

There are a lot of Loloi rugs on sale right now. Read my honest review of them here.

Enjoy the week!

On the Right Foot: A New Approach to Setting the Table, 34 Thanksgiving Sides, the 2024 Met Gala Theme & More!

November 13, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

Clockwise from upper left: Walking to a nearby bakery for mid-week treats; checking out Lola’s, a new cocktail bar in Madison; loving these new Boden loafers; sent my passport off for renewal.

The 2024 Met Gala theme was recently announced.

My tips for hosting Thanksgiving in the most stress-free way possible.

We have a Friendsgiving celebration on Sunday. Instead of doing a main dish, everyone is bringing sides and I’m very excited about it. Here’s a list of 34 side dishes if you’re doing something similar this year!

I love the trend of mismatched, loosely designed table arrangements.

Madisonians, you have to check out Lola’s. We went on opening night and loved everything about it from the 1960s-inspired decor to the cocktails to the playlist.

A recent roundup of things I have my eye on.

Predicting 2024’s home decor trends.

Going behind the scenes of The Morning Show with the show’s costume designers.

I just bought these ballet flats and they’re perfect! The bow is functional, too, so you can cinch the top if your heel slips out.

Tips for curing toxic workplace relationships — or at least making them more manageable.

Enjoy the week!

On the Right Foot: Autumn’s Best Cookbooks, Visiting Foreign Flea Markets, the Original “It” Shoe & More!

October 30, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

Hello! I’m back from our recent trip to Switzerland and it was incredible. If you’re like me, you’re captivated by the beautiful imagery of Swiss travel photos, but trust me when I say that photos don’t do it justice. I’ll try, of course, when I post travel diaries over the next few weeks. Until then, find a taste of what’s to come here. (Yes, the water really is that blue!)

23 of this autumn’s best cookbooks.

I’m loving the colors in the most recent roundup of covetable finds.

This recap of the Save the Last Dance is hilarious, and inspired me to rewatch the film on our flight back from Switzerland. It has all the nostalgia you’d expect.

Baking season is right around the corner! I’m loving this rolling pin that has silicone rings you can slide on to make sure you roll out the right size and height for your dough for consistent bakes. Then, click here for my family’s tried-and-true sugar cookie recipe.

Why you should visit a flea market during your next international vacation.

I adore pink and green together, especially on this striped satin bathrobe.

How the Gucci horsebit loafer became the original “It” shoe.

I’m eager to try this recipe for apple cider donut bread.

My favorite holiday candle is back! Stock up because it’s the perfect scent all winterlong.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
