Review: Ditto Endless Eyewear + Free Month Trial

September 4, 2015 by jessica 5 Comments

Ditto-Endless-Eyewear-Review-3

Have you ever yearned to have an endless wardrobe of sunglasses? Well, now you can, thanks to DITTO’s Endless Eyewear subscription service. For $19 a month, you can swap out your sunnies as often as you’d like with free shipping each way. (Or, you can keep prescription eyeglasses in constant rotation for $29 per month.) It’s a great way to try out designer sunglasses that you may curious about, like Karen Walker’s signature shades, a bejeweled Miu Miu pair, or a completely unexpected pair for Valentine’s Day.

HOW IT WORKS

After you sign up, pick out your favorite pair and the DITTO team will let you know if they’re ready to ship. In some cases, popular styles maybe temporarily unavailable and DITTO will notify you when they’re back in stock. You’ll receive your sunglasses in a few days. Wear them as often as you’d like before swapping them for another pair. Simply pick out the next pair online and ship the old pair back within five days of receiving the new style.

RECEIVE A FREE MONTH

You can try your first month free with code BEDKNOBS. I’m normally on the fence about subscription boxes (we all know how I felt about Try the World), but I think this one is worth trying out for at least the first month. Wearing a new pair of sunglasses for a couple of weeks will give you a better idea of whether or not they’re a good investment for you. It’s also just a fun way to freshen up your September outfit photos! I’ve been wearing this Paul Smith style for a couple of weeks and now I’m anxious to try something quirkier!

BB-Dakota-Bronwen-Dress-3

Even though stores are saturated with fall clothing, the #PSL is only a week away, and Labor Day is fast approaching, I just can’t bear to turn away from my summer favorites just yet. My summer was cut a bit short, thanks to my broken foot which made leaving the house in June and July a huge hassle. (Crutches are the worst thing, aren’t they?) Now that I’m footloose and fancy free (er, cast-free), I’ve been milking the last bit of summer in gauzy dresses and non-doctor-approved sandals. (If she had her way, I’d still be wearing sneakers.) We haven’t nailed down our Labor Day weekend plans just yet, but I suspect it will involved plenty of time outdoors taking in the last precious moments of the season. What are you up to?

5 Ways to Wear a Cape

August 25, 2015 by jessica 12 Comments

How-To-Wear-A-Fall-Cape

A fall cape can be an intimidating piece to pull off. There’s only a finite amount of time you can wear it before it becomes too cold and you’re going to stand out. It’s a wonderfully impractical statement piece that requires a confidence and thoughtful styling. It’s also a surprisingly versatile item. I put together five looks below, including a casual weekend look, a work-ready ensemble, and a cocktail-ready outfit to prove that a cape can be an autumn essential. But first, a few tips to keep in mind:

  • A camel-colored version goes from day to night with ease and will show less lint than a black alternative.
  • Long sleeves are a must. Bare arms looks silly with a wool topper.
  • Keep proportions in mind. By definition, a cape is wide and you’ll look even wider with oversize pieces.
  • Balance the heaviness of the cape with luxe fall fabrics and leather accessories. Think menswear loafers, structured satchels, and cashmere sweaters.
  • Generally speaking, a cape requires a hand-held bag, like a satchel or clutch. Ditch the crossbody, unless you’re planning to wear it underneath with the cape open.
  • Choose statement earrings, cuffs, cocktail rings, and pretty brooches. No one is going to see your necklace.

JCrew-Swing-Pullover-Sweater-2

Thanks to yesterday’s unseasonably chilly — and windy — weather, I had to abandon the idea of wearing my new dress and opt for a cozier Sunday Funday outfit. Even it wasn’t what I wanted to wear, it still gives me the excuse to talk about two recent additions to my wardrobe that I’m crazy about: J.Crew’s merino wool swing pullover and an astrology cuff by artist Julie Nolan.

First, the sweater. In grey, it’s basically a chicer take on your favorite sweatshirt. The heathering of the wool and the style of knit almost make it look striped up close. It’s thicker than a Tippi sweater and seems like it will hold up well. I’m wearing a small, which is my usual J.Crew size in sweaters. I also ordered an XS to try. The sleeves fit better in the XS, but I preferred the looser silhouette of the small. Given that I’ve already worn it twice the first week I’ve owned it, I can easily see it becoming a weekend go-to and a favorite for travel.

The astrology bracelet by artist Julie Nolan is another item I’ve had on repeat. It was gifted to me by UncommonGoods, a Brooklyn-based retailer that features unique designs and ethically made, handcrafted gifts. Bookmark ’em for the holidays, ladies, because there are hundreds of great gift-giving ideas. Start with the personalized gift section here to find unique items like etched glasses to celebrate a nuptial, throw pillows to commemorate a first home, and the understated Gemini cuff I’ve been wearing. There’s also a selection of gifts for women here and for men here. Each order also allows you to do something, well, uncommonly good. As part of its “Better to Give” program, the company will donate $1 to your choice of their not-for-profit partner organizations with every purchase. UncommonGood started the program 15 years ago and has since donated over one million dollars to charities around the world, including RAINN, American Forests, Women for Women International, and Reach Out and Read.

Loft-Boho-Halter

It’s the last day of the LOFT friends and family sale (40% off everything — including Lou & Grey — with code SHAREIT). This swing top is a great choice if you’re looking to round out your end-of-summer wardrobe. The loose silhouette is ideal for humid days, but the detailing is what really won me over. There are flirty peeks of skin that show through the delicate trim and a line of little tassels near the waist. I’ve linked to this and my other LOFT favorites below. (Is anyone else as obsessed with this dress as I am? It would be perfect with my new loafers.)

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
