Behind the Baubles: Anna Beck

Becky Hosmer’s love of jewelry started back in college when she had the opportunity to explore the globe, but it was her time in Bali that led to the Anna Beck collection. She was struck by the intricate metalwork techniques that appeared both ancient and modern. Working alongside a Balinese artisan, she began designing her own pieces and eventually launched her collection in 2003. All of her pieces are still handmade in Bali and leave me yearning to jetset to a far-flung, tropical destination.

Becky is offering B&B readers a 20% discount through Jan. 1 with code ABHoliday. Let me know if you treat yourself!

Bauble of the Week

December 15, 2013 by jessica Leave a Comment

It’s not often that I’m completely gobsmacked by a piece of jewelry, but just look at these earrings! The moonstone cabochons and diamond pave circles look just like fizzy champagne bubbles. Cheers!

Style Staple: Menswear Watches

December 13, 2013 by jessica Leave a Comment

Just a few years ago, a menswear watch was one of the most sought-after trends. (I’m looking at you, Michael Kors.) Now, I think it’s safe to say that the oversize design is officially a classic style staple—and an incredibly practical one at that!

There are plenty of versions made specifically for ladies, but don’t dismiss the men’s options like the Victorinox watches found at Watch Warehouse. Simply swapping or resizing the band gives you even more variety on your search for the perfect menswear-inspired watch.

1. Michael Kors, $120 // 2. Victorinox, £415 // 3. Movado, $595 // 4. Kate Spade, $169 // 5. Nixon, $200

We’re pretty serious about traveling to Europe next year—so much so that we decided against an affordable getaway to Puerto Rico at the end of January to save money. Unfortunately, that only works if I’m not tempted by the beauties above. (The loafers! Sigh!) One thing I do need, however, is a structured tote similar to the Armani bags at Diffusion Online. I haven’t decided on a color, but I like the shape of the bag above. Let me know if you come across any nice leather totes in the coming months. Bonus points if it has an option for a cross-body strap.

1. Armani, £179.00 // 2. Tory Burch, $285 // 3. Lulu & Georgia, $95// 4. J.Crew, $126 // 5. Tibi, $250 // 6. Cin Cin, $10 // 7. Kate Spade, $58 // 8. Tinley Road, $38 // 9. Target, $6

Deck the Halls

After two years of bringing home trees that dwarfed our living room, Dave and I finally chose one that’s the right size. It seems tiny. With fewer branches encroaching upon our living space, there are fewer places to display our large ornament collection. We finally narrowed down the selection to only the most special: memories from our travels, handcrafted blown glass, and delicate vintage baubles.

Like vintage ornaments, vintage jewelry is one of my very favorite things. Frippery Vintage sent over this ring just in time for the holiday party season—and I don’t intend to raise a glass without it! If you haven’t already, I encourage you to enter the giveaway for a $50 gift certificate to the vintage boutique. We could all use a special piece of jewelry at this time of year.

Congrats to Jenny who won the Hattie Sparks giveaway!

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
