On the Right Foot: the Most Colorful Hotels in the World, a Clever Way to Display a Seashell Collection, an Amazon Beach Tote to Buy & More!

April 22, 2024 by jessica Leave a Comment

Recent Madison dining experiences: Mint Mark’s current location before they close for relocation and Mermaid Kitchen bagels (available for pre-order with a Saturday morning pickup).

Rhubarb season is a couple of weeks away, which means it’s time to make Claire Saffitz’s rhubarb cake again. (The recipe is in her Dessert Person book.)

I can’t get over how brilliant this idea is for displaying a collection of shells.

How to tell the difference between antique, vintage, and retro.

I bought a lot of clothes recently.

NYT’s 36 Hours in Munich is making me eager to return.

The science behind feeling overwhelmed.

I just ordered this inexpensive tote from Amazon that gets rave reviews on social media as a beach bag. It’d double nicely as a farmers’ market tote, too.

Debuting our new bedroom lamps.

The most colorful hotels in the world.

This looks like the perfect simple cotton dress for summer than can be dressed up or down. How good would it be with this woven clutch?!

Enjoy your week!

So, I’ve Bought A Lot of Clothes Lately…

April 19, 2024 by jessica Leave a Comment

With my new job came a realization that I kind of hated most of my professional wardrobe. Or, if we’re being honest, I hated it on me as it no longer fit as well as it did pre-pandemic when I was going to an office regularly. So, I had to buy a few things and as we know, shopping for something specific opens up a Pandora’s box of other “must-haves.” Let’s just say that it’s been a spendy few months since my last “Things I Bought” roundup, but I’ve collected some lovely pieces I hope will become wardrobe staples this year.

WARDROBE
See this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • Madewell sling crossbody bag in straw – This little bag holds more than you’d expect, making it perfect for weekend errands and outings. I liked using it last week for a bike ride when I wanted something more elevated than a Lululemon belt bag.
  • Warby Parker “Gabriela” sunglasses in denim blue – I can’t step foot into Warby Parker without buying a new pair of sunglasses and these were my latest acquisition. I love the oversize frames in a pretty periwinkle blue.
  • H&M linen-blend t-shirt in light green – I bought this t-shirt last year in a different color and wore it a ton, so I was ecstatic to see that it was reissued in new neutrals. The low v-neck is wonderful.
  • H&M caftan – I’m in love with this piece and it’s very much what I want my summer style to be every day. As with most H&M items, it runs large.
  • H&M balloon-sleeved blouse – This also runs large. However, it’s on the shorter side, so I stuck with my regular size for the length. There’s a generous amount of fabric and it looks best half-tucked in.
  • Old Navy oversized French-terry tunic hoodie – This is such a great “throw on and go” sweatshirt for spring and summer. I bought it in white and blue.
  • J.Crew bungalow popover dress in dot linen – This will be an effortless summer dress that I can wear to work. The neckline didn’t seem that low on me, but I have a small chest so your mileage may vary.
  • J.Crew bungalow popover linen top in green – Given how much I liked the dress, I thought I’d try the top. I liked it when I first tried it on, so I clipped the tags and wore it for the day. It wrinkled so much and I’m not terribly keen on it now. So, maybe skip this one.
  • Boden gingham sweater set (shell and cardigan) – How cute is this sweater set?! I’ve been watching Palm Royale and it reminds me of something the cast would wear. The shell runs a bit large, but not enough where I think it’s worth trying a smaller size. The quality is excellent.
  • Sezane “Selita” dress – I bought this for our last cocktail event at my former job. It was fun to wear, but it does run awfully large.
  • Boden long-sleeve wrap top in navy stripe – This is such a flattering top! I went up a size in this since it’s so fitted.
  • Madewell kick out crop jeans in “Oneida Wash” – These run a size smaller than the darker wash of Madewell’s kick out crop jeans.
  • Old Navy linen-blend button-down boyfriend shirt in blue stripe – I’ve been wearing this regularly on work-from-home days when I want to look nice on camera, but be comfortable. It’ll be wonderful this summer since the linen is lightweight and breezy.
  • Jenny Bird “Doune” chunky hoop earrings – I had been looking for a pair of chunky hoops and Jenny Bird doesn’t disappoint. These are beautiful and high quality.
  • Boden jersey midi tea dress in “floret stripe” – Like the aforementioned wrap top, this is incredibly flattering and it has pockets! I’ll be wearing this quite a bit now that it’s getting warmer out.
  • Margaux ballet flats in saddle brown – I bought my first pair of Margaux flats last fall and they’re by far the most comfortable pair of ballet flats I’ve ever owned. Since my brown J.Crew flats were looking worse for wear (and wearing a hole in the leather), I upgraded to these.
  • J.Crew gauze popover shirt in red and the matching shorts – By far one of my favorite purchases of the past three months. I’m always on the lookout for cute summer outfits that I can wear on a bike. (I’m not graceful enough to wear a dress while biking and I hate wearing bike shorts underneath.) I’ll be buying this set in black soon enough.

We Finally Upgraded Our Bedroom Lamps

April 17, 2024 by jessica Leave a Comment

Purchasing new lamps for our bedroom was long overdue. As I get older, I’m pickier about the home items I buy. I want to invest in heirloom-quality pieces that I’ll love for decades to come — not just a quick replacement or cheap thrill. That takes a lot of time. It takes time to weed through hundreds of items online, read reviews, put together mood boards, and — perhaps most crucially — have a “cooling off” period to ensure that it’s really the right item.

I originally added these lamps to my Pinterest board at the beginning of my shopping journey, but continued to browse in case I fell in love with something else. And, yet, I came back to these. I’m a sucker for Schoolhouse’s designs and commitment to quality (cloth-covered cords seem to be rare these days), and I adore that the base is hand-blown glass crafted from vintage molds. It’s a perfect marriage of craftsmanship and design versatility. The hardest part was selecting the lampshade color, but I eventually selected the warmer hue of the natural burlap.

Schoolhouse Electric, Bond Lamp

To make sure I liked the lamps with the pieces I already owned, I put together a quick mockup (above). Fortunately, the IRL version turned out as great as I hoped based on my collage.

West Elm now offers made-to-measure linen sheers. (I’m making this recommendation with a warning that, in my experience, laundering West Elm curtains will likely cause them to shrink — even if you adhere to the care tag’s recommendations.)

Sex and the City is coming to Netflix, along with a new round of criticism of Carrie — but does it matter if she’s the worst?

I just purchased the bag included in last week’s roundup. It’s the perfect size for weekend outings: generous enough for all of your essentials without being too large.

If you prefer woven totes, try this one.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
