Julie Vos’ Pegasus Collection

December 21, 2015 by jessica 6 Comments

Julie-Vos-Pegasus-5

I don’t know how you warm-weather gals get in the holiday spirit. It’s above freezing here with spring-like weather and not a snowflake in sight — which makes it seem unbelievable that Christmas is in just a few short days. We’ve already attended a couple of family gatherings and I’ve already enjoyed too many cookies and “holiday spirits.” Thank goodness for loose dresses and major statement gems to distract the eye! My go-to pieces have been from Julie Vos’ Pegasus collection. As you’ll read in the Q&A below, Julie created the unique pieces to be reminiscent of Greek archaeological finds — but that’s not the best part. Three pieces in the Pegasus collection have spinning components to create two unique looks from one piece of jewelry.

What inspired you to create the Pegasus collection?
“I was inspired to create jewelry that could be found in a museum, as if the pieces were unearthed from an archaeological dig. I wanted the collection to reflect ancient Greek culture and myth.  The key figure is the winged horse, Pegasus, who is associated with poetry and has the star constellation named for him.”

How does your inspiration translate to the pieces?
“I intentionally made the pieces look a little bit rough and hammered, as if they were made a long time ago. To keep the collection soft and feminine, I added some pretty detail and luminous cabochon stones.”

What are the unique features of the collection?
“Hammered links and spinning centers. A pendant spins, so Pegasus is on one side and a reclining goddess is on the other. There’s a ring and cuff which also spin — one side is a semiprecious stone and the other is the Pegasus. We call these two-in-one pieces.”

The Weekend Guide 12.18.2015

BAKE
If you’ve already had your fill of peppermint bark this season, here’s another take on the dessert made with dark chocolate and freeze-dried fruit.

DETOX
Here’s what to eat after you’ve overindulged on dairy, salt, sugar, and alcohol.

RESOLVE
I’m guilty of making ridiculous resolutions that include shopping goals and wish list items. I’d like to turn over a new leaf in 2016 with thoughtful resolutions to embrace in the new year.

MEET
Let’s make “Fashion Santa” a thing here in the States.

DIY
Is your local tree farm out of pine wreaths? Don’t fret. This cookie cutter wreath is equally festive and won’t turn brown.

KNOW
There’s a recent study that suggests Millennial women prefer to receive gift cards or cash. See what else is on their wish lists.

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Gift ideas for the hardest people on your shopping list: Men.

Holiday Gift Guide: Men

*See all of the available colleges here. (I gave the University of Wisconsin one to Dave with his birthday gifts last weekend.)

**I know, this looks like an assault weapon. It’s actually a tiny knife for his keychain. Scroll through the photos to find it in the palm of a man’s hand. There’s an even smaller one, too.

***If he already has an Apple Watch, opt for a watch strap. If the strap isn’t specifically made for an Apple Watch, it will need an adapter like this one, which I purchased for Dave and gave to him early. (I’m terrible with surprises.) I read a lot of reviews for adapters, so don’t waste your time researching other options.

Behind the Baubles: Ben-Amun

When it comes to America’s most iconic jewelry designers, it’s impossible to overlook Isaac Manevitz’s illustrious career creating the Ben-Amun collection in New York for over 30 years. In the early ’80s, Isaac pioneered the statement jewelry movement, kicking off a robust career that would land his work in top fashion publications, on runways, and on prominent A-listers, including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. These crowning achievements are perhaps no surprise given the Cairo native’s family history in jewelry design. He’s the son of the jeweler to the Egyptian royal court. Isaac draws on his heritage for inspiration, along with his passion for travel and history to create stunning works of wearable art.

Through the Fog

Ben-Amun-Necklace-1

To say it’s been unseasonably warm in southern Wisconsin would be a bit of an understatement. It feels like spring with 60-degree temperatures, almost-constant rain, and foggy evenings. I know I’ll regret wishing for snow the moment flakes start to fall, but I really want a white Christmas this year … just a half inch that melts on Dec. 26. On the bright side, it has given me the chance to bring lightweight jackets out for another spin and wear shoes without worrying about snow and salt damage!

This grey wool shift has been a perennial favorite ever since I purchased it back in 2009 or 2010. I can’t think of another piece in my closet that has had such longevity. It’s a classic shape, has pretty brass buttons on the back, a flirty little ruffled hem, and makes for the perfect backdrop to new jewelry, like these gorgeous pieces from Ben-Amun. They’re from designer Isaac Manevitz’s “Roman Coin” collection. The collection is marked by pewter coins set in brass, reminiscent of treasured archaeological finds. You’ll learn more about the designer in this week’s “Behind the Baubles.”

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
