On the Right Foot: Making a Case Against Open Concept, a Fresh Side Dish, the Lightweight Jacket to Buy for Fall, & More!

August 2, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

We’re back from a few days away in Richmond, Virginia! It was such a fun trip and I’m glad our hotel had a pool to cool off in after the 90-degree, humid days of exploring! (Wearing my new bathing suit above!)

The case for rooms in home design.

Loving the clasps on this lightweight jacket.

Will neckties survive the pandemic?

Where does J.Crew fit in now that prep is coming back?

How to rebuild your wardrobe after pandemic weight gain. (This one really hits home. I’m going to go through my wardrobe and pack away everything that doesn’t fit me right now. It’s too depressing to face off with a closet of too-small clothes every day.)

A history of gymnastics from ancient Greece to today.

I’m incredibly intrigued by this broom that promises to collect pet hair.

A cucumber and avocado salad sounds like the perfect side for grilled meals.

I loved this house tour.

In case you missed it:

  • My favorite summer dress only cost $30. I bought it in two colors and I’ve been wearing them constantly.
  • What I bought and loved the last two months.

Things I Bought & Loved: June & July 2021

July 23, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

It was a pricey couple of months here as I rounded out my summer wardrobe with a few new dresses (one necessitated by an upcoming event) and a bathing suit I was Instagram-influenced to buy. After 15 months in lockdown, though, it was well worth the splurge to get myself out of Old Navy jersey swing dresses and back into pieces that feel more like my old self.

IN THE WARDROBE
See all of this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • Tory Burch smocked mini dress (available here and here) – I don’t know what it is about this vintage-inspired print, but I am absolutely in love with it. The dress is such a cute shape and unlike other things in my closet with those puffed sleeves. The fabric is incredibly lightweight and comfortable to wear when it’s humid outside. I went with a medium.
  • Kate Spade gingham ‘al fresco’ dress – I needed something for a couple of upcoming events and this fit the bill with its sweet fit-and-flare shape. I love the gingham print that can be dressed up with black heels or flats, or take on a casual look with sneakers. I went with an 8, which is the size the True Fit calculator suggested. The smocked back makes it so that it’s forgiving, too. As a bonus, it has deep pockets!
  • Old Navy linen-blend swing dress – This dress runs large, so definitely go down a size if your bust allows for it. It’s cute for those work-from-home days or for running errands, but it’s not my favorite purchase of the month.
  • Andie ‘The Mykonos’ bathing suit in black – I was influenced by an Instagram ad to purchase this bathing suit and I couldn’t be happier with it. It has a good amount of compression to smooth out bumps and imperfections, the wide waistband accentuates your torso, and the deep v-neckline is both flattering and sexy – and it stays in place! I have never felt this confident in a bathing suit before. The online fit calculator suggested a large and it seems to have been spot on.
  • Target maxi dress in yellow and in blue – I’ve been wearing these dresses on repeat since I purchased them. They’re just so easy to throw on with strappy sandals and a big piece of jewelry to feel effortlessly pulled together. It’s true to size.
  • Target macramé belt – And for the times when I don’t want the dress above to be too shapeless, this belt fits the bill! So far it hasn’t stretched out, which was my biggest concern about macramé.
  • Paravel ‘Cabana’ striped strap in shandy – I use the brand’s crossbody capsule bag a lot during the summer and picked up this strap for a sportier alternative to the leather strap it comes with. It’s wider than I expected it to be so I haven’t used it often with the purse, but I did clip it to my Away ‘Everywhere’ bag and it’s pretty perfect.
  • Madewell ‘Harlow’ square-neck top – After including this in two roundups over the past month, I figured maybe I should try the gauzy shirt for myself. It’s kind of like a fancier take on a t-shirt.

AROUND THE HOUSE

  • West Elm flameless tealights – I see that West Elm has increased the price for these and the other two items below back to regular price. I paid substantially less when they had a Fourth of July sale. I don’t think these are worth $20, but keep an eye out for a future sale. I like that the subtly flicker and the wax dip makes them look a bit more convincing than other faux candles. Really, I purchased these to put in these holders for candlelit dinners at home and for hosting later this year.
  • West Elm mini stripe runner – I paid $15 for this, which is precisely what I think it’s worth. The pattern is versatile, but I don’t think it’s special enough to warrant the full price tag.
  • West Elm mini check napkins – I liked the neutral pattern of these that will mix and match with other table linens we have.
  • Vintage brass duck bookends – I mean, why wouldn’t I snag a pair of duck head bookends?!

My Favorite $30 Summer Dress

July 21, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

If there’s one item you add to your next Target order, make it this dress. It’s cute, comfortable, lightweight for the hottest summer days, has pockets (!), and — best of all — it’s only $30. I’m wearing it in a medium here (which is my usual size in Target tops and dresses) and just placed an order for the blue one.

OUTFIT DETAILS

  • Dress – Target
  • Sandals – Ancient Greek Sandals
  • Bag – Kate Spade (similar; I do like the dress more with this bag, but I needed to carry more things with me while we were touring Minneapolis!)
  • Belt – Target
  • Earrings – Chan Luu
  • Sunglasses – Chimi

On the Right Foot: An Ode to Birthday Dresses, 30-Minute Meals, Summer’s Must-Have Sweater, & More!

July 19, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

Give me a mirror in a historic mansion, estate, palace, or castle and I will take a selfie! This one was from the Turnblad Mansion in Minneapolis, which is part of the American Swedish Institute. We stopped in during last weekend’s trip to the Twin Cities. (Earrings are Chan Luu, dress is Target, and lip color is this one in “Gossip Girl.”)

Speaking of Gossip Girl, this critique of the reboot sums up my feelings after watching the first episode.

This looks like the perfect lightweight sweater for cool summer evenings, especially later in the year when we’re closer to fall. I love it in light walnut.

  • Eight things I like from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.
  • You have no idea how much I love this tote bag for road trips. It can also double as a beach bag thanks to its stain-resistant exterior made from recycled water bottles. Get it here! (I’m also all about the limited edition colorway.)

I wasn’t going to shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, but…

July 13, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

The novelty of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale has worn off. I was planning to sit this one out entirely, but curiosity got the better of me when I decided to check out the home section … which then turned into browsing every single page of the sale. And I’ll be frank, there’s not much worth buying, especially those Barefoot Dreams cardigans and throws. You’ve spent an entire year in quarantine wearing loungewear. It’s time to stop doing that to yourself.

The sale opens to the public on July 28 and there’s a decent chance my favorites will sell out by then. Which is completely fine, since I don’t actually need any of these things, but it’s still fun to window shop. Here’s what I have my eye on:

  1. My favorite face lotion. It’s a good time to buy any of your skincare or makeup staples since you know you’ll use it anyway.
  2. A set of silicone utensils.
  3. Statement earrings. The black pair is the best.
  4. A bathmat that comes in three colors. (The grey one would work best with our upcoming bathroom remodel.)
  5. Reusable storage bags.
  6. This cult-favorite bra in charcoal.
  7. A striped Turkish towel.
  8. A black dress with a flattering, classic shape.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
