Gift Guide: Cats & Dogs

Gift Guide: Cats & Dogs 2018

This gift guide is a perennial favorite of mine, even if it’s also a guilty pleasure to scroll through some of the cutest and most unique items to gift our pets (or pet lovers) this year. It seems wildly indulgent at first blush, but a recent study cites that dog owners spend $1,285 a year on their pet, while cat owners spend $915 a year. Food and veterinary bills aside, I’m sure there’s some wiggle room in the budget for a present for your most loyal companion. (Maybe even a piece of chic cat furniture?)

Gingham Dog Toy – I can’t pass up an Instagram-friendly dog toy, especially when it comes in a selection of gingham colors to suit your decor.

Cat DNA Test – The ancestry trend has made its way to your furry friends! This cat-specific test offers insight into how closely your cat is related to select cat breeds and wildcats. The company will also offer insight into your pet’s health and habits. There’s also a version for dogs from another company.

Scratching Post – We have two of these scratching posts for Bacon. They’re fairly aesthetically pleasing, as far as those things go, but the real benefit is the wide base that keeps it from tipping over.

Food Dish – Something that’s sitting out all of the time should probably be pretty to look at.

Dog Sweater – I’m jealous of all of you small dog owners who can slip one of these cute sweaters onto your four-legged friend. I grew up with large dogs (a Gordon Setter and a Golden Retriever), and they would have looked ridiculous in a fairisle sweater.

Dog Camera – I can’t be the only person who wants to creep on her pet when she’s not home, right? (Please tell me I’m not alone…) This one will bribe your dog into a camera-ready pose with treats. It also has a two-way chat option that detects barking, allowing you to check in on an anxiety-ridden pooch.

Cat Toy – Sure, your cat will probably prefer the ribbons and boxes that the gifts come in, but this little mouse is too cute to pass up.

Pet custom Portraits Cherish you pets with custom pet portrait, add some personal touch to your home decoration. It’s easy! All you need is to pick your favorite photo(s) and send to us, and we’ll hand in the best piece of art to make you smile.

The Coveted

The Coveted | Bedknobs & Baubles

ONE | TWO | THREE | FOUR | FIVE | SIX | SEVEN | EIGHT | NINE | TEN | ELEVEN

Hello! We got back from our trip to New York last Tuesday and while I hoped to get back into blogging shortly after, there were too many to-dos keeping me occupied between Christmas decorating, shopping, and early celebrations. It’s nice to be back in the swing of things, though, even if putting together these covetable finds leave me adding more things to my wish list — specifically the cocktail glasses and the purse. I also adore the sleep mask, which would make for a lovely gift this season.

[Early] Weekend Links

Weekend Links on Bedknobs & Baubles

We’re off to New York today, and I can’t even tell you how excited I am for my inaugural visit to the city — especially when it’s in the midst of the holiday season! I didn’t have time to prep blog posts for my absence, so I’ll be back next Wednesday bursting at the seams with holiday gift guides and a Christmas in NYC photo diary. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Weekend Links:

  • Why department store holiday windows still matter.
  • The double standard of success for Michelle Obama and Beyoncé.
  • Apparently it was possible for the White House decorations to be worse this year.
  • I love this glitzy dress on Liz!
  • Nine Christmassy European cities to visit without the crowds.
  • Cats in literature.
  • I had no idea Christmas rental companies existed.
  • These earrings are awfully pretty.
  • While I love gin, I don’t think I’d like that juniper flavor in a latte.
  • How to gracefully decline an invitation.

Finds Under $50:

  • A pair of beautiful sculptural earrings.
  • The perfect pouch to store essentials in your tote bag, which doubles as a clutch. (This is on my Christmas list!)
  • I can’t believe this wrap dress is only $50. It’s so pretty!
  • This book is perfect for the literature lover on your shopping list.
  • A cashmere scarf that comes in 22 colors.

Earlier This Week:

  • A cashmere sweater is a must for casual holiday outfits. (And this particular sweater is now my go-to travel top. It’s so soft and roomy!)
  • Sharing what I bought in November.
  • Gifts under $25.
  • Crazy about my new handbag.
  • An introduction to Art Crate. Snag my print here.

Gift Guide: Under $25

Gift Guide: Under $25

This is one of my favorite gift guides to work on because it can be such a challenge to find great gifts under $25. This guide has something for most of the giftees on your list, including two great ideas for the guys. I didn’t want to go too girly with anything because I think it’s hard to buy clothing or accessory gifts for another person unless you know them really well. That said, I think these earrings would be a hit with most women on your list since the resin trend looks like it’ll last into next year.

Insulated Mug – YETI mugs have such a good reputation, but it’s not something that people always think it purchase for themselves. This is also a great gift idea for the outdoorsy person on your list.

Corkscrew – This is my favorite item in this roundup. I don’t even drink wine that often, but I’d still love to have it as an object d’art. I’d also recommend this corkscrew and bottle opener, which would be a great stocking stuffer. I have one that I keep in my luggage, and I just love the mint color.

Watch Strap – Dave purchased a couple of watch straps from this company recently and they’re great quality.

Book – A new coffee table book is perfect for your design-loving friend.

Liquid Eyeshadow Set – This shimmery set is almost too good to give away!

Coasters – I could include coasters in just about every gift guide. They’re a great gift to have on hand to reciprocate any unexpected gifts this season.

Baking Dish – This oven-safe bone china dish is as practical as it is beautiful.

Sneaker Cleaning Kit – I gave this to Dave a few years ago. It works really well and makes sneakers look almost new.

What I Bought in November

November 27, 2018 by jessica Leave a Comment

Wardrobe Update November 2018

Earlier this year, I toyed with the idea of adding only one clothing item and one accessory to my closet each month. I don’t have that kind of self restraint just yet, but I’m getting there and I have to admit that I’m happier with this approach than I am when I reflect back on a hoard of new items. I’m beyond happy with the items I purchased this month and I think I’m going to get a lot of wear out of everything — even that ultra-trendy bag! I did purchase one more thing on Black Friday and I’ll add it to next month’s roundup if it makes the cut!

PURCHASED
See all of this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • Madewell ‘Lilyblossom’ button-front dress – I have a Madewell dress in a similar cut that I bought last year and absolutely adore, so it’s probably not a surprise that I added this to my wardrobe. The color and print are so pretty and I loved the nipped-in waist.
  • Staud ‘Shirley’ bag in white – I haven’t been able to get this bag out of my head since I ordered the small brown faux-croc version earlier this fall. While I didn’t like the color or texture of that one,  I realized that my heart was really aching for the white one I fell for last year. Do I think it’s best use of my money? No. But I am crazy about it and happily took money out of my “splurge” savings account to cover the cost, so it’s a wash for my budget. As far as practicality is concerned, the zipped pouch holds a decent amount, including a sunglasses case, so I think I’ll actually get a decent amount of mileage out of it. I just hope that transparent accessories aren’t totally passé next year!
  • Ugg waterproof insulated wedge booth – I had been looking for a cute pair of winter-ready wedge ankle boots for years and these are it! Plus, they’re easy to pull on and off, which is not always a given with boots that don’t have a side zip. I think these will be a great option for going to and from work this winter and for jaunts around the city. I went up a half size to allow room for a pair of thick socks.

DIDN’T WORK OUT
Things I tried and didn’t love.

  • Gap mid-rise skinny jeans in black – These are the absolute worst. I wanted a pair of black jeans earlier this year and ordered these, but they didn’t fit in my regular size. I found myself thinking about black denim again and ordered a variety of sizes in these to see if I could find one that worked. Nope. The most obnoxious part is that they’re a magnet for dust and pet dander.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
