Casual Elegance for the Holidays

November 26, 2018 by jessica Leave a Comment

Garnet Hill Cashmere Sweater Review

My family isn’t one for glitz and glam, and while I love dressing up for the holidays, I’ve spent many years being the overdressed one at those occasions. I’ve begun to embrace a more casual approach to holiday dressing that still feels special, which is why I’m in love with this Garnet Hill cashmere sweater that the brand sent over in preparation for the holidays.

Cashmere is an inherently luxe fiber, so you’ll feel festive even when pairing it with jeans and ballet flats like I did here, especially if you add an oversize accessory. (My Lele Sadoughi earrings are my absolute favorite pair when I want something eye-catching.) This particular sweater is even better for the holidays because of its generous, swingy shape that allows you to indulge in all of the holiday sweets! Just half-tuck it into your waistband to give it some shape. It can easily be dressed up with a pair of lace pants and heels or given an edge with faux leather leggings. There’s also a very good chance that it’ll become your favorite lounge piece with a pair of sweats. One word of warning, though, it runs large due to the a-line shape. I’m typically a size 8 and I’m wearing a small here, but I probably should have sized down to an XS.

This is actually my third cashmere piece from Garnet Hill and just like the others, the fabric is supple, incredibly soft, and densely woven. I think their cashmere pieces are some of the best you can get for the price point, especially today during the brand’s cashmere flash sale where you’ll save 40% on select items. I love this beautiful turtleneck sweater, and I use this cashmere wrap on all of our international plane rides. If you need a gift for the guy on your list, I’ve purchased these cashmere socks for Dave for the last two years and he loves them. (They won’t be as durable as your run-of-the-mill pairs, but they’re an affordable luxury gift. We line dry Dave’s pairs to extend their wear.)

On My Radar

On My Radar :: Bedknobs & Baubles

TRAVELING

As I mentioned last month, we’re heading to New York for a five-night stay in the city after Thanksgiving. It’ll be my first time in New York and I can’t wait to be there with all of the Christmas lights and decor. Gray Malin just released a beautiful photograph of the Rockefeller Center Tree, which I’ve already made my phone background to put me in the holiday spirit in advance of the trip! Shortly after we return, we’ll head to Chicago for the Christkindlmarket. Spending a holiday-filled weekend in the Windy City has become one of our favorite annual traditions — even if we have to limit ourselves to just one new ornament! A tree can only handle so much glitz!

WATCHING

I’m not a huge fan of movies. For whatever reason, the idea of sitting still for two hours for a feature film sounds like too much of a time commitment, yet I can binge-watch TV shows all afternoon long. It took no time at all for me to get through two new shows: The Haunting of Hill House and Bodyguard. I really liked Hill House up until the ending, but I’ll stay mum if you haven’t watched it yet. Bodyguard, on the other hand, was great through the last episode. We just started Homecoming, which gets rave reviews from critics and mediocre ones from viewers, so I’m curious to see how that unfolds.

DECORATING

If you saw my Instagram story last week, you’ll know that we finally installed a dining room light fixture! We had been living with an old ceiling fan that we removed the blades from last summer when we painted the ceiling. It was certainly a conversation piece, but not in the way we would have liked! I’m smitten with the new fixture and it has given us so much motivation to continue working on that room. We ordered this rug to try. The 7′ x 10′ size was just $140 when we bought it, so it’s cheap enough to keep for now even if it’s not “the one.” Adding curtains is the last thing I’d like to do in that room before the holidays. We have dingy roller shades right now and I think I’m going to add a curtain rod and light-filtering sheers or sheer linen drapes. I want the light in the room, while offering privacy from our neighbor’s house. Yet, I’m not sure I want to cover the architectural detail the window provides in that room. Anyway, just another thing to obsess over (and Photoshop ideas) before pulling the trigger!

WEARING

I can’t wait until the month-end recap or an outfit post to talk about the dress I bought, especially because there aren’t many sizes left. Madewell’s fit-and-flare dresses fit my body like a glove, and I love that the low v-neck and short hemline keep the dress flirty. The colors of the pattern are a lot more vibrant than they appear on screen. I’m smitten. I’m also eyeing up this bag in white (I do have a trip to Florida on the books in January), this coat, this sweater in green for casual holiday gatherings (just add sparkly jewels!), this sparkly sweater, and this swimsuit.

SHOPPING

I’m trying not to bombard you with all of the holiday spirit just yet, but that’s probably going to change next week. Ideally, I’d like to get the majority of my shopping done before the end of November. (I’d like to kick back and enjoy the holiday season instead of worrying about last-minute gifts.) I end up bookmarking all sorts of gift ideas to pass along while I’m shopping for friends and family, so those gift guides are going to start comin’ atcha soon. I’m also working on a gift guide for men that includes the things that I’ve given over the years that have rave reviews. I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of seeing the same J.Crew sweaters and socks on everyone’s gift guide. (Speaking of socks, if the guy on your shopping list is looking for new pairs, Dave likes Garnet Hill’s cashmere socks, Anonymous Ism, and the wool socks from Chup.)

MOISTURIZING

Winter does a number on my skin. I’m stocking up on my moisturizing favorites to avoid running out during the winter. I’m still using this every night and loving how my complexion looks, along with this eye cream. This serum is an absolute must, and this overnight mask is great for the really drying days. My hands are prone to severe dryness and cracking during the winter. This hand cream, which you can snag at hardware stores, is the only thing that can keep that at bay.

Save vs. Splurge: Build a Quality Wardrobe on a Budget

Save vs. Splurge: How to Build a Quality Wardrobe on a Budget

We’ve all been there. Somewhere in the glossy pages of the latest fashion magazine or displayed delicately at a boutique, we spot it. It’s effortless. It’s chic. It’s the pièce de résistance your wardrobe has been missing all these years.

Then you look at the price tag and your dreams of purchasing that special piece are dashed. No matter how many days you bring lunch to work or brew coffee at home, you’ll never save up enough from a few weeks of penny pinching to make that of-the-moment item your own. Don’t be discouraged, though. A quality, thoughtful wardrobe is accessible on a budget with a strategic approach to wardrobe building. Below, you’ll discover the key places to splurge and where to save.

And if you’re strapped for cash, a good rule of thumb is to go with budget-friendly pieces in classic shapes and neutral colors. Those can usually pass for a more expensive alternative in a pinch.

WHEN TO SPLURGE

The lion’s share of your budget should go toward the pieces you wear most often. While “cost per wear” can come off as a fashion lover’s rationalization for spending money, there’s value in the practice. For example, an ultra-trendy romper purchased for $200 and worn twice comes out to a $100 cost per wear. That’s a huge chunk of your budget for an item that didn’t get much love. On the other hand, spending $200 on a handbag you reach for three times a week throughout the year only comes out to $1.28 per wear. That’s the better investment for your dollar.

You’ll also want to spend more on these often-worn items because they are more likely to withstand the stress of regular use. A higher price tag doesn’t always mean better quality, but it usually does. Be sure to read product reviews and scour blogs to find testimonials about an item or brand.

The right splurge for you is dependent on your lifestyle and sartorial preferences. If you live in a warm climate, then a heavy wool coat obviously isn’t for you. If you’re like me, then dresses are a staple in your collection and spending more on a single dress that fits like a glove is worth every cent. Use the guidelines below as inspiration for creating your own splurge list.

  • Outerwear – No matter where you live, you need a quality piece of outerwear. It needs to keep you warm or dry (often both) and a budget find isn’t going to make the cut. Choose a coat that’s best for your climate and invest in a classic piece you’ll wear for years, like a wool coat, a trench, or peacoat. Opt for a wear-with-everything neutral like black or camel.
  • Cashmere – Cheap cashmere often feels, well, cheap. This is an area you don’t want to skimp because a good cashmere sweater or scarf will retain its shape and loft for years. You can find some good quality cashmere pieces at modest prices at retailers like Lands’ End or Garnet Hill, but you’ll want to feel them in person before committing.
  • Work Staples – I know this is a wishy-washy category because it’s so dependent on where you work and your personal style, so you’ll need to evaluate what types of pieces you reach for over and over again. Do you love your black pants because they go with many colorful tops? Is your a-line skirt the workhorse of  your 9-to-5 wardrobe? Do you live in shift dresses? Do you need a quality suit? Once you identify the pieces you wear to the office just about every week, you can rest assured that spending money to upgrade your basics will be money well spent.
  • Shoes – Synthetic materials, thin soles, and shoddy stitching should be reasons enough to keep you far away from budget shoes. Your shoes take quite a beating outside and while you might be tempted by the trendy styles of cheaper pairs, expensive shoes are made to withstand that kind of wear. Good shoes will need some maintenance to keep them in good shape for as long as possible. Keep an eye on the sole and take them to a cobbler when it starts to look worn.
  • Handbags – A beautiful leather handbag elevates a budget outfit like nothing else. Splurge on a classic shape in a neutral color and you’ll reach for it again and again. Many designer bags hold their value. If you find that you didn’t use a bag as often as you would have liked, you can sell it and likely get a portion of your money back to put toward something you will use.

WHEN TO SAVE

The most stylish women know how to mix those high-end purchases with budget finds. Think of the “save” column as the icing on the cake. These are the updated, trendy items that might not capture your fancy for more than a season and that’s okay. However, this is precisely why only a small portion of your budget should be dedicated to these pieces. It goes back to that cost per wear. Spending $50 on a sundress you wear once a week for the summer will run you around $4 per wear June through August — much easier to stomach than a higher priced version.

  • Tops – Most people won’t notice if you wear the same pair of pants or jeans every day, but they will notice if you have your favorite blouse on repeat. Stock up on on-trend pieces with pretty patterns or updated silhouettes to keep your wardrobe fresh. (Need proof? How many people are actually wearing cold-shoulder silhouettes this year?)
  • Sundresses – Gauzy little sundresses shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg. Few are tailored, so an inflated price tag doesn’t make sense for an oversize, flowing fit. Besides, your tastes will likely change next year, so you’ll be glad you went the cheap route.
  • [Some] Costume Jewelry – If you’re going to drop a small fortune on a piece of jewelry, it better be the real deal. However, I can’t recommend opting for the save version of all costume jewelry because you really can tell the difference between, say, a Target piece and a designer costume piece. The materials are better quality with the designer version, they rarely tarnish, the and the designs are more eye catching. However, if you can’t stomach spending a few hundred on costume gems, go vintage. Searching Etsy or eBay will rustle up great pieces at even better prices. Even better? You can smugly tell people it’s a vintage piece when they ask about.
  • Swimwear – A bathing suit will get sandy and salty in the ocean, or full of chlorine in the pool. The same goes for your cover-up. Save your dollars for items you’ll wear away from the surf.

I’d love to know what items you save and splurge on! Let me know in the comments!

One Dress, Three Ways

Garnet Hill Linen Pleated Surplice Dress

There’s a reason linen is synonymous with summer clothing. The sustainable fiber is breathable, naturally anti-bacterial, and has twice the strength of cotton. And, when linen is cut into a classic little black dress, it’s a summer staple that you can wear all season long. I had the opportunity to partner with Garnet Hill to feature this dress and share a few ways I’ve worn it over the past month. (Unfortunately this particular dress is now sold out, but this one is similar and you can find more linen dresses here.) It has been, unquestionably, the highlight of my summer wardrobe. It feels airy on the hottest days (including a high-humidity day in Austin, pictured below), and still allows me to feel pulled together despite the heat. Plus, linen is a versatile fabric that looks just as appropriate in casual situations as it does at the office, making it a smart investment for your summer wardrobe.

What I Wore in London

April 26, 2018 by jessica Leave a Comment

London

I made a concerted effort to pack as lightly as possible for our trip to London. After dozens of vacations, I finally realized that I’m likely to wear and rewear my favorites. While I’d love to be the type of blogger who takes outfit photos on each of her adventures, I’m not. I’m way more interested in sightseeing instead of location scouting, and oftentimes that means I favor the more practical pieces in my wardrobe that rarely make it to the blog. I’ll admit that it doesn’t make for the most exciting packing list, but it did make getting dressed a breeze in the morning! Plus, paring down on clothing means there’s more room in my suitcase to bring home treasures. (Admittedly, I brought a few extra pieces that didn’t get worn, like a black dress and loafers.) Below, you’ll find a list of everything I wore while I was in London.

London Packing List :: Bedknobs & Baubles

WHAT I WORE IN LONDON

  • J.Crew trench coat – With the amount of rain and misty days that London gets, this was such a practical jacket to have in tow.
  • Lululemon lightweight jacket – I actually brought this to wear on the plane with an oversize sweater and yoga pants, and didn’t expect to wear it while we were in London. But there were a few warmer days that the trench felt like too much and when we were just heading out for evening beers at a pub, it was nice to stash things in the zippered pockets and not bring a bag.
  • Gap jeans – I’ve been losing weight and brought these jeans in a larger and smaller size on the trip. After the first two days, the larger ones were much too big and I wore the smaller size the rest of the trip. (Yes, I’m totally bragging, but I’m really excited! I’m going to order the next size down, too, since they’re on sale right now. May as well be optimistic, right?)
  • J.Crew striped long sleeve t-shirt (plus an old one from Banana Republic) – A striped shirt is such a classic piece and I felt pulled together for a day of exploring when I paired it with the rest of my daily uniform.
  • J.Crew crew neck sweater (both black and grey) – If you don’t have these sweaters yet, you’re missing out. The price point is great, especially when they’re on sale, and they hold their shape throughout the day. I own half a dozen in various colors.
  • Banana Republic grey v-neck sweater – What I love most about this sweater is that it’s machine washable.
  • Old Navy umbrella – Truth be told, this Old Navy umbrella is questionable quality, but I loved the stripes. You might just be better off going a more practical route for this item rather than picking one just because it’s cute.
  • Garnet Hill scarf – As many of you know, I’ve had a relationship with Garnet Hill for a couple of years now. I received this cashmere scarf from one of our first collaborations and it’s one of my favorite travel items. It’s so soft and generously sized that I also use it as a wrap on the plane, but it’s not so large that you can’t wear it as a regular scarf. (You can see a glimpse of it in this photo.) There’s a dark grey version on sale for $88 right now, but I think the scarf warrants the money even at full price. It really is beautiful.
  • Karen Walker sunglasses – We only had a couple of sunny days, but these were great for hiding my tired eyes since I was sick for part of the trip!
  • Vrai and Oro stud earrings and Monica Vinader ring – For as much of a jewelry hoarder as I am, I try to pare down my gems to everyday pieces on vacation. What that means definitely depends on the vacation. Since this wardrobe skewed more classic and comfortable, stud earrings and my favorite ring fit the bill. On a tropical trip, I tend to bring statement earrings and long pendant necklaces.
  • Paravel backpack – This was the first trip I’ve taken this backpack on and it did not disappoint. I have a full review in the works, but suffice to say it’s worth every penny. It’s durable, rain resistant, easy to clean, and has ample room for everything you’ll need (and collect) during the day. Plus, it transforms into a shoulder bag, which is great for museums that don’t allow backpacks.
  • Peds no-show socks – I bought a dozen pairs of these socks for the trip and love them. On colder days, I wore the Smart Wool version.
  • Puma sneakers – We walked an average of seven miles a day, so sneakers were a must.

We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
