Feeling Sporty

Bailey Blue Shifty Shift Dress

We had planned to go to Milwaukee on Saturday to visit West Elm and try out a Casper mattress before ordering one in the coming weeks. (We’re finally upgrading from our old, uncomfortable queen to a king-size bed!) On a whim, we checked Priceline right before we left and found a room at the historic Pfister hotel for a fraction of the price. We couldn’t pass it up and decided to spend the night in the city, giving us plenty of time to explore antique stores, go to German Fest, and take a boat tour of the city’s rivers and Lake Michigan.

I’ve gotten pretty good at packing for a last-minute excursion, but this dress from Bailey Blue has made it so much easier. It’s an incredibly soft jersey material that feels like a well-loved vintage t-shirt. It was the perfect thing to wear to beat the summer heat while staying comfortable, especially when paired with my new Stan Smith sneakers. (Street style stardom, here I come!) If you haven’t yet heard of Bailey Blue, it’s definitely worth checking out for its selection of breezy summer dresses and rompers at reasonable prices. They also have a selection of plus-size styles. Everything is in junior’s sizing, so be sure to size up.

Jorts!

Miu Miu Sunglasses, Banana Republic Bucket Bag, Gap 1969 Best Girlfriend Denim Shorts

I would never have guessed I’d own a pair of jorts. I’m not a fan of denim, nor do I have an affinity for shorts, so combining the two has always been unappealing for my own wardrobe. But when I stopped by Gap a couple of weeks ago, I couldn’t help but to try on a pair. (Mostly because I thought they’d be cute with the H&M off-the-shoulder blouse I purchased that day and have since returned.) These are the brand’s 1969 best girlfriend fit shorts, which have a slightly flared leg opening — a major plus for ladies with larger thighs who have spent too many summers wrestling with shorts that cut into their flesh when they sit down. (You know what I’m talking about.)

In other news, we had an active weekend with a bike ride, a long walk around downtown Madison to play Pokémon Go and try craft cocktails at a new restaurant, another long walk around the Arboretum, and Dave’s family reunion. Our biggest accomplishment was cleaning and organizing our garage. We had boxes down there since I moved in five years ago, along with piles of Dave’s things that have been untouched for just as long. We made it through three-quarters of the garage and donated seven large bags of items, mostly clothing. If there’s one thing that persuades you to stop shopping for awhile, it’s getting rid of that amount of stuff!

Summer in the City

Dave and I got back last night from our three-day weekend in Chicago. Even though the city is so close to Madison, we don’t make it down nearly as often as we should. In fact, this the first time we’ve visited the Windy City when it’s been warm outside. We typically head down for the Christmas market in December, and the last time we visited in July, the temperature didn’t rise over 65 degrees. (I had to buy tights!) We spent the weekend popping into beer bars we love, visiting The Field Museum for the Terracotta Warriors exhibit, and logging thousands of steps playing Pokémon Go along with the hundreds of other people playing — every time we saw someone holding their phone, walking with a sheepish smile, we knew they were playing, too!

Here are a few bars and restaurants we visited that you should add to your must-eat list the next time you’re in Chicago:

  • Piece Brewery and Pizzeria: Fantastic pizza where you can build your own culinary creation. We chose a white pizza topped with goat cheese, sauteed mushrooms, and red onions. A small is more than enough food for two people. There’s typically a wait at night, but the bar is lively and has a fairly quick turnover.
  • Mahalo: A Hawaiian-infusion restaurant in Wicker Park. It’s expensive, but worth it for the Instagrams you’ll get. Just get cocktails and go someplace else to eat.
  • Headquarters Beercade: Bar meets arcade. Order a drink and then select a free arcade game to play. They have an long beer list and a decent selection of cocktails to choose from. I played a lot of Ms. Pac-Man.
  • Au Cheval: According to Food Network and Bon Appetit, this is where you’ll find the best burger in America — and, yes, it’s really that good. Expect a long wait, though. We had a 90-minute wait time and went across the street to Haymarket Pub & Brewery for beer while we anxiously awaited our seat time.
  • Half Acre Beer Company: This is the brewery behind Chicagoland’s favorite beer, Daisy Cutter. The taproom also has a full kitchen.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
