Shopping List: 9 Red Summer Dresses I Love

June 23, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

Outfit Details: Grace Atwood x The Drop dress | Tory Burch mask (other styles) | Birkenstock sandals | Paravel backpack (similar) | Chimi sunglasses (available in black) | Aurelie Gi rings (learn about the brand here)

Admittedly red is not one of my favorite colors, falling somewhere near purple for least-loved. However, nothing can beat the fiery hue when you need a jolt of color. I picked up this dress last fall (and it’s surprisingly still available in a few sizes) and hadn’t worn it outside of a Zoom call up until our trip to Charleston in April. I have a renewed appreciate for the color and found myself browsing for other red dresses recently. Here are nine of my favorites:

  1. A dress with a classic fit-and-flare silhouette.
  2. Pair this cute mini with white sneakers.
  3. I adore the smocked top of this eyelet dress.
  4. This cotton voile option would be pretty over a swimsuit and out for cocktails.
  5. This dress has the prettiest woven striped detail.
  6. Ruffled straps add interest to an otherwise simple maxi dress.
  7. A tiered cotton dress that’s perfect for the hottest days.
  8. A long-sleeve option with a plunging neckline.
  9. While it’s a splurge, you’ll wear this tunic dress each summer for years.

The [Almost] Perfect Late Summer Casual Dress

August 1, 2018 by jessica Leave a Comment

WAYF Sleeveless Blouson Midi Dress

I bought this dress, which is part of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, on a whim. I had honestly expected to send it back, but I liked the colors and thought it would be a nice option for late summer when I grow tired of brighter hues. Happily, it fit the bill, but it’s not without fault. This dress wrinkles so easily. I ironed it before going downtown for drinks this week (which isn’t a long drive, mind you) and this is what it looked like after sitting in the car. If creases bother you, this is a terrible option. But if you don’t mind the wrinkles when it comes to a casual dress, then it’s a really pretty, lightweight option for late summer and early autumn.

See?! So many wrinkles. I like the dress, but you really can’t sit down in it if you’d like to keep it pristine.

Perfect Pairings

March 12, 2013 by jessica Leave a Comment

I had been home sick for the last three days with some sort of cold/flu hybrid. It made for a long weekend of DayQuil and daytime television. On yesterday’s episode of The View, I learned that years of wearing sky-high heels caused irreparable damage to Sarah Jessica Parker’s feet. She’s now putting away the Manolos in favor of more sensible options. Although underrated, flats make a cocktail ensemble effortlessly chic. Choose a pair with a pointy toe in metallic or patent leather.

Buds have already burst into blossoms and birds are coaxing you out of bed at dawn, but spring isn’t in full bloom until one more telltale sign: the first nuptial announcement lands in your mailbox.

As much as I love a good party, celebrating “I Do” is expensive. You’ll need to budget for travel expenses, hotel accommodations and whatever’s left on the registry. At least your outfit doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are a few ideas to sail through wedding season on a budget – without being photographed in the same outfit twice:

  • Pluck a dress from your closet and transform it with accessories. Statement baubles and glittery shoes do wonders.
  • Bypass the designer duds in favor of a pretty mid-priced dress, like one from the Oasis clothes collection.
  • Swap dresses with a friend. After all, her family has already seen the cocktail dress she wore to her cousin’s wedding.
  • Thread a needle and start sewing gems and pearls onto a simple dress. An embellished neckline? Rhinestone sleeves?

Now that the outfit is set, go ahead, slip on a pair of sparkly heels and start practicing the “Electric Slide.”

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
