Spark Joie

The last thing my wardrobe needed was another dress, especially a dark floral frock when I’ve already been adding them to my closet with abandon this season. But you know what? Sometimes you just have to stick with what works for you. I’m a dress die-hard and I knew I had to have this little Joie number the moment I spotted it. I adore the feminine ruffles along the shoulders and the whisper-thin silk chiffon that catches the wind just right. (There’s a slim-fit slip underneath that keeps you from having a Marilyn Monroe moment, which I definitely had with a different dress recently. So embarrassing!) There aren’t many days left where I can go without tights, but this dress is just as cute with tights and a turtleneck sweater layered underneath for a winterized version of the look.

Moody Floral

SheIn Black Lantern Sleeve Floral Print Shift Dress

Between the Old Navy dress I wore here, the Joie dress I recently purchased, and this budget-friendly number, I can’t stop adding dark floral dresses to my fall wardrobe. It’s just so darn easy to throw one on with a pair of ballet flats and feel pulled together. And, if we’re being honest, it’s that kind of simplicity I’m aching for right now. After a heavy workload over the last couple of months, I’m finally able to put the stress behind me and really enjoy carefree autumn days starting with this week’s road trip. We’re heading to Louisville on Thursday for a couple of nights and then continuing to Nashville on Saturday. Judging by the forecast, it looks like the Joie dress is going to be the perfect thing for Tennessee’s summer-like temperatures!

Falling for Stripes

Well, it’s officially sweater weather. (Although today is expected to reach 72 degrees, which is all the excuse I need to break out my favorite summer dress one last time before packing it away for the year.) I typically hate the change in seasons and the hint of frost in the air, but this turtleneck is easing some of the post-summer blues. It’s a cozy, non-itchy wool blend that’s perfect for crisp fall days. (Seriously, how cute would it be for autumnal photo opps? Think apple picking, enjoying the fall color, getting lost in corn mazes, etc. It’s why I’m going to wear it pretty much constantly this season.) It’s available today for 30% off with free shipping. Go with your regular size for the intended relaxed fit. I’m also a huge fan of how it looks with a navy a-line mini skirt and the block-heel pumps in this Instagram.

Dark Floral

As you’ve probably gathered, I’m not much of an Old Navy shopper. By in large, I think the quality of the garments is too low even for the price and the thought put into designs is lacking. However, there are times when Old Navy does it right: insanely affordable denim, basic t-shirts, and this dress. Prints are a hard thing for a discounted retailer to pull off, which is why I typically go with solid colors if I’m shopping for inexpensive duds, but Old Navy nails it with this multi-colored floral dress. The variety of flowers and colors in the pattern make it look more expensive than it is, unlike the other two-color prints for this dress that look cheap.

As with any low-cost apparel, pairing it with luxe accessories elevates the look. I went with my go-to Ferragamo flats and a DVF clutch. Both of these have high price tags, but the cost per wear makes it worthwhile. I normally wore out a pair of black flats in the $100-150 range within a year. The Ferragamo pair still looks brand new. I’ll have them resoled when they start to look worn. The clutch is one of my absolute favorite accessories. I splurged on it a couple of years ago and haven’t had a desire to buy another black clutch since. The classic shape won’t go out of style and it’s large enough for all of your essentials.

Striped

Every year, my wardrobe echos the back-to-school mindset of autumn with preppy basics like this striped sweater from Banana Republic and the new driving moccasins you may have spotted on Snapchat over the weekend (username: bedknobsbaubles). The only drawback, if you can consider it one, is that the weather is still far too hot and humid to actually wear these things for longer than a quick photo session. (As if you couldn’t tell from my hair …) However, I’m happy to brave the elements — and a touch of heat stroke — if it helps convince you that this is definitely one sweater worth adding to your closet this fall. Truth be told, I haven’t loved anything from Banana Republic this year (aside from the purse worn here). Fits have been off on me and the fabric quality questionable, but this sweater is definitely a keeper. It’s a lightweight blend of merino wool, cashmere and synthetic materials that’s machine washable. (Seriously, when was the last time you scored a non-cotton sweater that could be laundered at home?) The fabric is on the thin side and I almost returned it before trying it on because of it. However, I was pleased to discover that it’s not actually that sheer when worn with a nude bra underneath. It runs true to size.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
