Every now and then I inadvertently create what becomes my wish list for the upcoming season and this, my friends, is the one. Everything from preppy basics like a camel a-line skirt and a black crewneck sweater to updated designs like that transparent mini tote and those sculptural earrings are just what I’m craving to update my closet this fall.

No matter how over-stuffed my closet is, those “I have nothing to wear” days always seem to pop up. And I suspect many of you are in the same boat. Of course it’s not about a lack of clothing; it’s about not having the right clothes that fit the person you want to be that day. Over the years, I’ve realized that I reach for an iteration of this outfit on those days: skinny jeans, flats, and a patterned blouse. It’s a no-fuss outfit that I can wear to my casual office or out on the weekend, and opting for a blouse in an eye-catching pattern keeps it from being too boring. I spotted this blouse at LOFT last weekend and fell in love with the pretty eyelet detail, the ’70s-inspired colors, and the ruffled trim — and for $30, it was a no-brainer for my next nothing-to-wear moment which happened to be the very next day! If you’re looking to order it online, go with your usual LOFT size and order a size down to try, too. I went with my typical size small at the brand and it’s still roomy.
LOFT blouse | Gap jeans | Ferragamo flats (similar budget-friendly version) | Banana Republic bag (old; similar) | BaubleBar earrings (hot pink and pale pink are both on sale here)
Under $50
H&M dress | Topshop sneakers | Kate Spade card case | Gorjana earrings | Banana Republic top | BP bag
Under $100
H&M coat | Banana Republic gloves | Haute Hippie top | Nine West shoes | Bauble Bar earrings
This dress was destined for my closet given that it’s basically an updated version of the one I bought last year and have worn just about every week since. I’m such a sucker for a loose dress with flats, so much so that I’d call it my signature style. To keep my favorite look from getting stale, I look for pieces each season that have on-trend detailing. This year’s iteration of my beloved dress has a sweet bow tied at the neck, dainty ruffled hems, and gathering to add texture. If you’re as captivated with it as I am, definitely go down a size. I usually start with a medium in a new item, but I had to go with a small in this and there’s still plenty of extra room.
