The Best Item from the September POPSUGAR Must Have Box

September 30, 2016 by jessica 1 Comment

If I’m being honest, September’s POPSUGAR Must Have Box wasn’t my favorite. For the third month now, POPSUGAR sent me a Must Have Box to try. I was pretty excited about the previous two mystery boxes. I mean, how could I not be when one of the boxes included an inflatable swan drink holder?! This month’s box was a let down in comparison. Included inside:

  • Jack & Lucy Bicoastal Wide Brim Hat ($58): I’m just not a hat girl.
  • NCLA MANI-ER Tool Kit ($16): I would have enjoyed this more if I didn’t already have a couple of travel manicure sets. I’ll toss this in my desk at work.
  • Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask ($36): I have yet to try this, but I’m not excited about it. My hair is relatively healthy, split ends aside, without damage from over processing. I’ll give it to my mom to try since she dyes her hair.
  • Flint Lint Roller ($10): Okay, this retractable lint roller is pretty awesome and way easier to tote around than a traditional one that just becomes a mess.
  • Smith & Cult Lip Lacquer in “The Warning” ($22): LOVE.
  • The Gluten Free Bites in dark chocolate coconut ($5): These are vegan and gluten free. They’re okay, but I’d rather have the dairy!

What made it worth it? The Smith & Cult lip lacquer in “The Warning,” a gorgeous sheer red gloss. The Must Have Box comes in at $39.95 (you can take $5 off your first box with code SHOP5). Given that the gloss retails at $22, another $17.95 for the other items really isn’t that bad, especially when I’m going to get a ton of use out of the retractable lint roller and I’m going to attempt to be a hat girl for at least one day.

Beauty Essentials for After-Work Events

September 26, 2012 by jessica Leave a Comment

As an event planner for a local business magazine, I don’t often have time to prep right before an after-work gathering. (In fact, I’ve become accustomed to changing clothes in the confines of a small bathroom stall!) Keeping my makeup and hair looking picture-perfect throughout the day takes some effort in the morning, but it’s worth getting up early. Here are a few beauty essentials I rely on:

  • Pretty Cosmetic Case – It’s a chic way to tote mascara and lipstick to the ladies room minutes before the guests arrive.
  • Velcro Rollers – Curling my hair and setting it in Velcro rollers helps retain body throughout the day. (Visit Elle’s blog for a great tutorial.)
  • Concealer – A little extra concealer keeps me looking bright eyed even if I’m running ragged!
  • Dry Shampoo – I have fine hair that lies flat and listless by the time 5 o’clock rolls around, but this dry shampoo gives it extra oomph.
  • Eye Shadow Primer – Creased eye shadow tops my list of beauty annoyances. I’ve found that this primer eliminates them completely.
  • Travel-Size Fragrance – Just a little spritz puts you in the party spirit.
  • Bright Lipstick – Even if the rest of your makeup fades, lipstick in a punchy color transforms your look.
  • Foundation Primer – I’m a recent primer advocate. It really does keep your makeup smooth and fresh longer than going without.

A small moment of peace from the past weekend. I A small moment of peace from the past weekend.

I feel like I’ve been doomscrolling since the news broke of SCOTUS’ decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. My emotions run the gamut from sadness to frustration to unadulterated rage. I’m deeply disgusted by conservatives and evangelicals, but especially by liberals who supported Bernie Sanders and refused to vote for Hillary Clinton at such a crucial moment in our history. Did you know that 12% of Sanders’ primary election supporters voted for Trump in the general election? In Wisconsin alone, 51,000 of them voted for Trump — a state Trump would win by just 22,000 votes.

Your vote matters. It matters in national elections, statewide elections, and local elections. It’s crucial that Democrats organize as strategically as conservatives did and restore reproductive rights.

In the meantime, donate your time, talent, or treasure to help those facing an unwanted pregnancy. @thecut has a great list on their site with organizations to support in states likely to prohibit abortion. I’ve donated to @plannedparenthoodwi.
Reveal day is finally here! It’s been a long pro Reveal day is finally here! It’s been a long process that started back in April 2020 with a kitchen ceiling leak that was attributed to water leaking from our tub faucet and working its way through the floor and into the kitchen. Our bathroom was never anything to look at (before photos on the feed), but the leak really accelerated our plans for a full bathroom renovation when timelines — and budgets — allowed. It feels a bit surreal to have it done and I don’t think I’ll ever stop admiring it whenever I walk past!

Head to the blog today to read about two headaches that came at the tail end of our main bathroom remodel.

I am just the happiest! I keep looking at this bat I am just the happiest! I keep looking at this bathroom and thinking how lucky we are that we were able to do this! It wasn’t always easy to navigate the stressful moments, but the end result is worth it. I feel like I’m at a luxury hotel every time I shower! (And it sure beats showering with the spiders in our [basically unfinished] basement bathroom. It was like camping in our own home for the past six weeks — and I very much hate camping!)

More photos to come!

The rest of the shower tile will be installed on Monday and then they’ll starting laying the floor tile. I can’t wait!
