1 Dress, 2 Ways | The Wedding Guest

April 16, 2013 by jessica Leave a Comment

Between the wedding venues, cocktail dresses, cake samples and late-night Pinterest inspiration, nuptials are certainly stressful for the bride-to-be. But once invitations start landing in mailboxes, the stress is passed along to friends who are now standing in front of their closets wondering what to wear.

Buying a new frock for each event isn’t realistic for most of us. It’s a much more modern – and fiscally responsible – approach to choose one beautiful, versatile vintage dress. I’m fond of this brocade stunner from J.Crew that goes from destination wedding to formal affair with ease.

For the beach: Pair the dress with a raffia clutch (you could splurge on the Anya Hindmarch version or go with a ultra-affordable vintage one on eBay), a bold boho necklace and flat metallic sandals.

For a formal affair: Refined shapes in punchy colors keep your look for being too stuffy. Try a pair of pumps in a matching color, introduce a contrasting color with your clutch, and top it off with dainty earrings and a cocktail ring.

Perfect Pairings

January 29, 2013 by jessica Leave a Comment

I’d go so far as to say that a leather duffel bag was my best purchase of 2012. I chose this one and haven’t had to check baggage since. (It’s amazing how much you can pack into a weekender!)

Right now, I’m coveting:

  • An oversized gold lamp would make an elegant statement piece in an entryway
  • A pair of Tory Burch perforated sandals in a lovely shade of terracotta
  • A vibrant rug that’s also affordable
  • Jewelry by Julie Vos – I’d love to wear her beachy pieces on our next seaside vacation (this necklace is also stunning)
  • Name your own nail polish makes for a fun bridal shower favor
  • Whistles’ sleek lookbook, especially that striped dress
  • A pair of tweezers in glamorous gold

Quotable Style

December 12, 2012 by jessica Leave a Comment

From poignant observations to inspirational quips, the best things about fashion have already been uttered by history’s greats. So why not feature them here? Every so often, I’ll pair a stylish quote with today’s fashionable embodiment, like these Tory Burch wedges.

Do you have a favorite style quote? Let me know! I’d be happy to feature it and give you a shout out for the inspiration!

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

• Spent quality time with my favorite cat

• Snapped a lot of Lily content

• Drove home with a new lilac in the passenger seat

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
