Ten Things

March 16, 2015 by jessica

MarchOutfit2v3

My favorite bloggers are women who are smart, self-assured, and authentic. And I love getting to know more about them, which is why I love the “Ten Things” posts from Fran and Alissa earlier this month. To follow in the footsteps of these lovely ladies, here are ten things you might not know about me:

  1. I’m allergic to cats, Bacon included. Fortunately, I don’t break out in hives around him like I do most cats. I just need a rescue inhaler for the asthma he caused. (And, yet, I still can’t resist his fuzzy little face.)
    [spacer]
  2. I’m comfortable around guns. My dad is a retired police officer and a hunting enthusiast, so we always had firearms around the house growing up. He was very open about them and answered questions my brother and I had, so we weren’t curious enough to snoop when our parents weren’t home. I didn’t share an interest in hunting, obviously, but I was required to take a hunters’ safety class. I earned top marks on the written test and the field test. I remember being surprised that not everyone hit the bullseye. I mean, you look down the barrel and shoot. How hard is it?! Haha. (My brother is in the U.S. Army and is an excellent marksman. It must run in the family.)
    [spacer]
  3. I took Dutch for two semesters in college. It’s a shame I only retained a handful of phrases and the correct pronunciation of “Gouda.”
    [spacer]
  4. I have a tooth on the roof of my mouth and only three incisors on the bottom instead of four. The one on the roof of my mouth is dormant (thank God), but there’s a calcium deposit where a tooth could have formed. Strangely, my brother has the exact same deformity and his tooth came in. Poor kid had to have it removed in elementary school. (His wisdom teeth never formed, so don’t be too sympathetic.)
    [spacer]
  5. I will always choose beer over wine. (Any fellow beer geeks can find me on Untappd with username jmhamm.) Also, I’ll never order soda. I stopped drinking it two years ago and now find it sickeningly sweet.
    [spacer]
  6. My dad trimmed my bangs when I was little by taping lined paper to my forehead to make sure his cuts were straight. I remember seeing the scissor shadows come dangerously close to my eyes!
    [spacer]
  7. I make really good sugar cookies. My mom is an fantastic baker and I’ve inherited plenty of family recipes, including the sugar cookie recipe that I’ve perfected.
    [spacer]
  8. I was in Girl Scouts long after it was socially acceptable. I stuck it out for twelve years and earned the Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts, by organizing a summer reading program for first through third grade children.
    [spacer]
  9. I’m named after the main character in some tawdry romance novel my mom read when she was pregnant with me. (Bonus: I was born in May and my parents briefly considered giving that to me as a middle name. Until they said “Jessica May Hamm” out loud. A little too close to “mayhem” for their liking. They picked Marie.)
    [spacer]
  10. I hate watching movies, but I love binge-watching television shows.  A movie seems like such a time commitment to sit through, even though I have no problem planting myself in front of the TV for hours of House of Cards.

I think it would be kind of awesome to be named “May Hamm” – come on, how great would that be?!

I wanted to take Dutch, but since the UW has Dutch in the German department, and I was already a German major, they wouldn’t let me. So weird. There was some woman professor (I don’t remember her name) who always sounded so interesting!

Jessica May Hamm would have been awesome lol, but thank God they chose Marie instead. I am working on my ten random facts but my life is pretty boring we’ll see. I am wearing a J.Crew shirt just like yours today, and love this color combo.

Love getting to know you better fellow Gemini. I remember a moment where my Dad combed my hair, with a crooked part down the middle and two lopsided ponytails. I too love to bake…which I inherited also from family. We should start an online bakery. I could handle the cakes! You the cookies. And finally I was a girl scout too, but gave that up fairly young for Piano. Oh, and my middle name I inherited from two family members.

I have to agree with Nina (the commenter below me). I really like this type of post. This is my first time to your blog so it was a great “introduction” for me. I sometimes feel like I don’t know the blogger at all because they don’t give me much insight into their life. You did this perfectly. Ps–Im jealous you know Dutch!! I am currently learning French and I want to learn Dutch some day so badly!

I don’t watch a lot of movies these days, either, but sit me down in front of House of Cards or Bates Motel and I can definitely watch a couple of episodes in a row!

Dutch, how cool! So what is the right pronounciation of Gouda? I have had a few discussions with people about this 🙂

I love these posts!! I may have to shamelessly copy you three. I had no idea you were allergic to cats! I don’t know what I would do if I became allergic…probably just deal with it, as you do. 🙂 I took Japanese for three years in high school and all I remember are some numbers, how to say “My name is Kimi”, and how to say chicken burger. It’s sad! Also, I was just reading my Girl Scout cookie box yesterday and it described the top honors. Go you for getting the Gold Award! I wasn’t in Girl Scouts for that long, though I do have fond camp memories.

I love this outfit, I especially love the shirt.

I agree with you, movies are such an investment, especially because you dont know anything about it such as the characters, their motivations, or even the run time of the film. With a show you already know more or less what to expect and youre already invested into the characters.

and yes I agree, house of cards is awesome

I am with you on so many of these things! I was a girl scout through high school and for the gold award my troop (the four girls who were still left at this point) became the leaders of a brownie troop. Truthfully I have no desire to ever go camping again, but it was fun at the time.

If I see a movie has run time longer than two hours, I will not watch it, but I’m happy to let netflix auto play take the wheel of my life and have no problems with that.

Bummer you are allergic to bacon! But it’s good of you to deal with an inhaler for his sake, not many people would be willing too.

We need to quiz eachother on our Dutch!! My Dad was born in the Netherlands and taught us when we were little…and I don’t remember 99% of it :/ I need to brush up on it since I’m going this Fall to the Netherlands for the first time!! eeeeek! so exciting.

That’s so exciting! I spent two weeks in the Netherlands in college. My friend was going to art school in Den Haag, so I stayed with her. Dave and I also did a day trip to Amsterdam last year when we went to Belgium. I love all things Dutch and would love to go back again! Make sure to add Delft to your itinerary. I remember it being my favorite city.

Everyone we met in Philly apologized for their gruff nature, despite no one actually living up to that stereotype. 😂

It’s so nice to be home after a whirlwind week. It’s so nice to be home after a whirlwind week. We flew out to Philadelphia last Friday for a few days of exploring. It was our first time in the City of Brotherly Love and we loved every minute of it from the architecture to the restaurants, and most of all: the welcoming and friendly people. After that, we had one night at home before a flight to Denver to celebrate my cousin’s wedding. We got back to Madison late last night and have spent the day puttering around the house, getting caught up on laundry, grocery shopping, harvesting the season’s first tomatoes from the garden, and admiring just how much the hydrangeas have grown in the course of a week.
I always get a kick out of comparing views of our I always get a kick out of comparing views of our home today to the photos I took during our home inspection. (Swipe to see our main bedroom then!) While I knew the house had potential, it was hard to look past some of the owner’s “design” choices. Though, it looks like the room was destined to have a warm-toned quilt. 😂

P.S. @schoolhouse just released new colors of their popular Stillwater Floral Quilt!

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together.
