The French Wardrobe: Update

November 8, 2013 by jessica Leave a Comment

Back in September, I mentioned that I was embarking on the French Wardrobe challenge. You can read more about it here, but it boils down to curating a wardrobe of versatile basics with just five statement pieces each season to keep it fresh.

THE RULES

  1. Quality over quantity.
  2. Basics don’t count.
  3. Accessories don’t count, unless you’re spending a lot more than usual.
  4. Socks and underwear don’t count.
  5. Shoes do count.*

*I’m not counting shoes. I don’t buy an excessive amount of them to begin with.

MY PROGRESS:

  • Part of my Five: Erin Fetherston lipstick-print dress, Anthropologie cat-print dress

  • Basics: Banana Republic black pants, Forever 21 white dress, T by Alexander Wang black skirt

  • Bags: Diane von Furstenberg clutch (majorly on sale plus an additional 25% off brought this down to $55 after shipping)

  • Accessories: Jennifer Meyer for J.Crew bracelet, Kate Spade belt, opal ring at an antique store in Alexandria, Forever 21 ring
  • Shoes: Joie tartan flats, Forever 21 d’orsay flats

WHAT I’VE LEARNED:

  • I have a pretty solid foundation of basics to work with. Although, I would like to add a pair a few more pairs of pants. I love these and would like to purchase them in navy and khaki the next time BR has a 40% off promotion. I’m also on the lookout for a slightly loose cashmere v-neck sweater. I like this J.Crew version in acorn, but it would have to go on sale first.

  • I probably shouldn’t go to the mall. I only purchased a dress and ring from Forever 21 when I stopped in to check out the d’orsay flats.

  • It’s becoming apparent that my five will be made up of whimsical prints.

  • My Pinterest “Style” board has been crucial. It’s easy to see what I’m drawn to when there’s nearly 800 pins to browse. I like full skirts, bright colors, and interesting prints and textures.

A few moments from the weekend. A few moments from the weekend.
A small moment of peace from the past weekend. I A small moment of peace from the past weekend.

I feel like I’ve been doomscrolling since the news broke of SCOTUS’ decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. My emotions run the gamut from sadness to frustration to unadulterated rage. I’m deeply disgusted by conservatives and evangelicals, but especially by liberals who supported Bernie Sanders and refused to vote for Hillary Clinton at such a crucial moment in our history. Did you know that 12% of Sanders’ primary election supporters voted for Trump in the general election? In Wisconsin alone, 51,000 of them voted for Trump — a state Trump would win by just 22,000 votes.

Your vote matters. It matters in national elections, statewide elections, and local elections. It’s crucial that Democrats organize as strategically as conservatives did and restore reproductive rights.

In the meantime, donate your time, talent, or treasure to help those facing an unwanted pregnancy. @thecut has a great list on their site with organizations to support in states likely to prohibit abortion. I’ve donated to @plannedparenthoodwi.
Reveal day is finally here! It’s been a long pro Reveal day is finally here! It’s been a long process that started back in April 2020 with a kitchen ceiling leak that was attributed to water leaking from our tub faucet and working its way through the floor and into the kitchen. Our bathroom was never anything to look at (before photos on the feed), but the leak really accelerated our plans for a full bathroom renovation when timelines — and budgets — allowed. It feels a bit surreal to have it done and I don’t think I’ll ever stop admiring it whenever I walk past!

Head to the blog today to read about two headaches that came at the tail end of our main bathroom remodel.

I am just the happiest! I keep looking at this bat I am just the happiest! I keep looking at this bathroom and thinking how lucky we are that we were able to do this! It wasn’t always easy to navigate the stressful moments, but the end result is worth it. I feel like I’m at a luxury hotel every time I shower! (And it sure beats showering with the spiders in our [basically unfinished] basement bathroom. It was like camping in our own home for the past six weeks — and I very much hate camping!)

More photos to come!
