Uncommon Jewelry

September 9, 2014 by jessica 7 Comments

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]B[/dropcap]efore the days of unbridled Internet shopping (high schoolers and college kids have it good these days), I looked forward to visiting my Aunt Linda. She always had a stack of the best catalogs to pour over: Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, and, of course, UncommonGoods.

Founded in 1999, UncommonGoods was a mission-driven company before Toms and Warby Parker made it a popular business venture. The company was founded with the mission to provide “unique designs and handcrafted gifts created in harmony with the environment without harm to animals or people.” Most of the available products are made in the U.S., half are made by hand, and a third incorporate recycled or upcycled materials. And now that e-commerce has made made significant leaps since the late ’90s, it’s even easier to find a unique, unexpected gift for yourself or others.

The jewelry on UncommonGoods stays true to the retailer’s roots with personalized items and handmade pieces you can’t find just anywhere. I’m most drawn to the astrology lockets handcrafted by artist Julie Nolan. A series of dots create constellations to subtly share your sign.

If you’re on the lookout for gift-giving ideas and the woman in your life isn’t won over by jewelry, UncommonGoods carries plenty of alternatives. Try a perfectly preserved dandelion poof paperweight for the romantic, the cutest baby booties for the mom-to-be, embroidered state pillows for the traveler, or dish towels with a convenient wine pairing cheat sheet for the gourmand. Take a peek at the full lineup here.

Valentine Gift Guide

February 6, 2013 by jessica Leave a Comment

I’ve been struggling with finding the perfect gift for Dave this year. (Between Christmas and his December birthday, I’ve exhausted all of my ideas!) Here are a few options to get you started if you’re still on the hunt for the perfect present (or just looking to treat yourself).

For Her

  • Dainty underpinnings in the prettiest shade of pink
  • A ring that’s lovely on its own or stacked with others
  • Dessert plates
  • A playful frock
  • Ladylike earrings
  • A quirky trinket box (preferably with gems inside)
  • Pastel flats
  • A bright card case

For Him

  • Rugged weekender (and overnight plans)
  • Sunglasses in a classic shape, but with an unexpected detail (the arms of these are tipped in orange)
  • An unexpected tie bar, like an anchor or the Chrysler Building
  • A belt perfect for weekends
  • An elegant slim wallet
  • Cologne in his favorite scent (or just one with great packaging)
  • Playful pocket squares

Giveaway: $40 to NOVICA

December 14, 2012 by jessica Leave a Comment

NOVICA is a leading fair trade website, showcasing the work of artisans across the world. Of course this gives you the opportunity to find hundreds of unique items in one place, but NOVICA’s mission is really about supporting global artisans in a very personal way. (As you shop the site, you’ll even see biographies about each person.)

The challenge with supporting so many artisans is that the NOVICA site is expansive! I shopped with them last year and it took me hours to scour the site and settle on an item. That sentiment was shared by other customers and NOVICA responded with its new Gift Finder. Now, those hard-to-find gifts are easier to discover. You can narrow down those choices by gender, price point or even interest. (Cocktail gifts? Yes, please!)

Check out the new Gift Finder, then come back and let me know what you like on the site. One reader will win a $40 gift certificate!

Phone nooks don’t get the attention they deserve Phone nooks don’t get the attention they deserve. They’re practically begging to be used as built-in displays for ceramics!

(I removed the phone jack, pulled the wires back through the hole, and patched it up, so it’s no longer functional for a landline. I assume a future owner won’t miss it either!)

I can’t believe we’re celebrating our fourth C I can’t believe we’re celebrating our fourth Christmas in the house! I’ve taken a version of this photo each Christmas to serve as a timeline of the small changes over the years. One thing never changes, though: I think our Christmas tree is the prettiest. 😊 I hope you have a wonderful holiday in however you’re able to celebrate this year. 2020 has been difficult, but we’re in the home stretch now! Sending lots of love your way!

As my holiday gift to you, enjoy my favorite famil As my holiday gift to you, enjoy my favorite family cookie recipe now on the blog! (Find it via the link-in-profile or search for "sugar cookie.”) It never feels like Christmas until I’ve had my mom’s sugar cookies. In a typical year (or even an atypical one like 2020!), I’ll spend a couple of days working on these — baking them the first and decorating them the second — and it immediately puts me in the holiday spirit. Not only are these nostalgic for me as she’s been making them my entire life (there’s even a photo of me, no older than 2 years old, sitting at the kitchen table “helping” with them), they’re hands-down the best sugar cookies I have ever had. And plenty of people agree with not-so-subtle hints to make them each year.

It never really feels like the holiday season unti It never really feels like the holiday season until I’ve made sugar cookies with my mom’s decades old recipe — and until I’ve risked a food-borne illness by snacking on raw dough. I shirked the holiday tradition last year after having been too busy with holiday travel (ten days in Belgium and a long weekend in Chicago left me too busy with other holiday to-dos), but there’s zero excuse to put off baking this year. #AlwaysHome #QuarantineForever
Buffalo plaid packages tied up with string ... the Buffalo plaid packages tied up with string ... these are a few of my favorite things. 🎶 (I don't think Julie Andrews would mind tweaking the lyrics a little bit, right? 😉)

Pro tip: Instead of looking at the gift-wrap section for things to decorate your presents, hit up your local craft store. I bought a package of 75 jingle bells, a dozen mini bottlebrush trees, and twine in seasonal colors for just a couple of dollars each. (The wrapping paper is from Target.)
