The Weekend Guide

December 4, 2015 by jessica 3 Comments

WATCH
It’s easy to go overboard with holiday spending. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you continue shopping for yourself and loved ones this month.

BAKE
As far as I’m concerned, December means it’s time to add peppermint to just about every dessert. I’m anxious to make these indulgent brownies.

ADMIRE
This slideshow features 27 photos of the best White House decorations and memories.

SIP
Mulled wine is an easy — and festive — drink option.

WRAP
There’s never a shortage of elaborate gift wrap ideas around the holidays. You can keep your over-the-top designs. I love this elegant option with a simple bow and monogrammed ornament. Can’t find alphabet stickers in time? Try it with bakers twine in either red or gold and a jingle bell, both available at Target.

PLAY
Which one of your friends always tells the same damn story? Put it to a vote with “Who’s Most Likely To…” The game looks like a fantastic ice-breaker with a new group of people, as long as they have good senses of humor!

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Here’s what I spent my money on in November.
A few beloved snapshots from last month.
The eyelet dress I’d like to wear all of the time.
Stocking stuffers for $25 or less! (Dave uses the shoe cleaner on his sneakers.)
Anthro’s adorable holiday window.
15 of the best colorful faux fur scarves.

Perfect Present: Kate Spade Bow Ornament

November 15, 2015 by jessica 1 Comment

Perfect-Present-Kate-Spade-Bow-Ornament

Today, you can snag Kate Spade’s “Tacky Bow” ornament in silver or gold on sale for $18.75. Even if your recipient isn’t as ornament-crazed as I am, she’ll appreciate adorning her tree with this whimsical take on a classic gift topper. I couldn’t resist ordering the gold version for myself this morning! It’s also a great item to stash away for the unexpected gift exchange that always seems to pop up at this time of the year.

On a marginally related note, have you seen Sugar Paper’s holiday collection with Target? I purchased three rolls of the cheerful gift wrap yesterday: mint and gold polka dot, gold stars, and knit hats.

Choosing Art With Minted

October 21, 2015 by jessica 8 Comments

Minted1

I’m a sucker for a good piece of art. Ever since I moved away from home, I would pick out a piece of artwork each summer from the annual art fair in Madison, and my 31st birthday present to myself was a Gray Malin print. So, when Minted asked if I’d be interested in checking out their stable of artists, I jumped at the chance to add a new piece to my ever-growing collection. And, while we should be spending our time looking at houses, isn’t it more fun to think of the items nestled inside once the mortgage is signed? (No? Just me?)

Even though I’m kidding about that, it does bring up a worthwhile reminder. Buying art as a couple is full of compromises. We sat down together and scoured Minted’s marketplace of independent artists, discussing the things we loved and didn’t love about each piece, eventually narrowing it down to a handful of favorites (or ones we could both live with), including (clockwise, starting from the top): Float, Morning Mist, Going For a Swim, Pining For Pineapple, Bits, Malibu Surf & Sky II, and Rainforest.

Minted2

Given my propensity for seaworthy prints and ocean hues, we decided to go with something that would complement our art collection and chose “Morning Mist” by artist Lindsay Megahed. The print has the color scheme I’m drawn to, while adding welcome contrast. Once that was settled, there were a few more decisions to make:

  • Paper: You can go with the standard option of acid- and lignin-free paper with a deluxe pigment print, or the archival option on 100% cotton rag paper for a museum-quality archival pigment print. We went with the less expensive, standard option.
  • Size: Most, if not all, prints come in a wide range of sizes. In the case of our pick, sizes start at 5″ x 7″ and go up to 44″ x 60″, giving you the flexibility to choose a statement piece to feature or find the perfect petite print to fill in a spot on your gallery wall. (We went with 18″ x 24″.) There’s also a handy size chart at the bottom that shows a person holding the various prints. It’s an easier reference point than gauging the size based on a room rendering.
  • Frame: Minted offers 11 choices to coordinate with various interiors. We went with the ultra sleek white option. (I’d like all of our art to have white frames, eventually.)

Minted4

The print arrived safely in a sturdy cardboard mailer approximately 10 days later. Artist signatures adorned the inside of the package. (You know I love good branding.)

You also have the option of having the artist sign the work in pencil in the lower, right corner of the piece. (Honestly, I’m not sure why anyone would decline this option. It makes the work feel more personal.) It comes ready to hang with wire attached to the back of the frame.

Perfect Present: Perry Clark Apothecary

By the time September rolls around, I usually have a couple of holiday gifts already stowed away for December. They’re just little things from our travels and summer art fairs, like woven dish towels or pottery mugs, but the holiday season is so much easier knowing that a unique gift is already picked out. I’m actually behind the eight ball on my gift-giving strategy this year, though. We’ve been on four trips since February and I took #TreatYoself very seriously.

Now, I know it’s verboten to breathe a word about that magical time of year this early. However, I’m hoping you’ll forgive me knowing that I’ve come across a gift destination worth bookmarking now: Perry Clark Home, a thoughtfully curated shop specializing in artisan products and fine home accessories. Do you have a hard-to-shop-for aunt who insists she has everything she needs? There’s a small-batch lilac candle for her. Friends who just purchased a lake home? A set of charming fishing mugs will do the trick. A budding chef? Try an olive wood cutting board for his latest charcuterie creation. Someone like me? I’m a fan of the lightly scented orange water candle, and the hand soap and lotion set (and I definitely plan to reuse the pretty glass containers). Plus, there’s complimentary gift boxing and free shipping on all orders. You can also take 10% off your order with code BIRTHDAY10 through the end of September.

It took upwards of five hours to create the stunning masks for Givenchy’s first runway show at New York Fashion Week.

PEEK
I’m beyond excited for Tory Burch’s show every season. Judging by these behind-the-scenes images, it should be another hit.

MAKE
Scour your farmers’ market for the best late-summer vegetables to make this garden tart. The base is a roasted red pepper and feta spread.

Now through Monday, take 30% off bespoke Stubbs & Wootton slippers. I’m terribly tempted to get a pair with varsity letters spelling out “HI” or with my initials.

While I knew the house had potential, it was hard to look past some of the owner’s “design” choices. Though, it looks like the room was destined to have a warm-toned quilt. 😂

P.S. @schoolhouse just released new colors of their popular Stillwater Floral Quilt!

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
