DIY It: Dolce & Gabbana Brooch Beanie

November 4, 2015 by jessica 8 Comments

Dolce-and-Gabbana-brooch-beanie

I was stunned to come across this Dolce & Gabbana knit hat for $1,375. I know it’s a luxury brand. I know it’s cashmere. But, I know it’s still a rip off. This is probably the easiest DIY project to tackle for much, much less and you get to walk away with a winter beanie that uniquely yours.

  1. Pick out a black ribbed knit hat. I chose this merino wool version available for $24. There are certainly cheaper options, but the ribbed texture of this one looks luxe and real wool in the winter is always a better option than synthetic.
  2. Pin on an assortment of brooches. You could go new with this Bauble Bar set or this one from The Limited. However, I’d recommend going vintage. Sift through your grandma’s jewelry box for ’50s beauties or scour eBay* to find unique brooches to decorate your hat. (Searching for “vintage Trifari brooch” will yield some great options. This one gives the D&G brooch a run for its money.) If you’d rather save time, I found this Dior bird on One Kings Lane and Sweet & Spark has a nicely curated selection.

*Don’t fret if your brooch arrives with a loose clasp. Snip off the pin with a pair of pliers, file away sharp edges, and sew it directly to your hat.

Noir Jewelry Star Ear Climber and Rosanna Darling Tray

As many of you know, I’m an event planner for a local business magazine. Our biggest event of the year, a business-to-business expo, was held yesterday and I’m absolutely tuckered out. So much so that I’m heading to the office late, leaving early, and taking tomorrow off. I think I deserve it, considering I walked the equivalent of nine miles yesterday! I wore these Kate Spade shoes with a pair of loafer socks. My feet were certainly tired at the end of the day, but I didn’t have blisters and there’s no swelling today. It’s making me seriously consider another pair in metallic silver, magenta, or light gold.

And, speaking of recent purchases, I picked up these at the Shopbop Friends & Family sale: star ear climbers from the Jem and the Holograms collection and a “darling” trinket tray by Rosanna. I’m a bit disappointed that this rainbow fur scarf wasn’t available at the time. I’m kind of obsessed with it.

The Best Jewelry from the Shopbop Sale

Shopbop’s Friends & Family sale wraps up today with code INTHEFAM25. Don’t miss your chance to save 25% on favorites like Karen Walker sunglasses or the rhinestone beauties above. I couldn’t resist snagging the star ear climbers from the Jem and the Holograms collection at Shopbop. They’re just $22.50 after the discount and an incredibly fun way to pay homage to one of my favorite childhood cartoons.* (Although, I think I’ll skip the movie.) I also picked up this “darling” jewelry tray for my dresser.

*We had to draw self-portraits in preschool and I insisted on giving myself Jem’s signature pink hair. My teacher stifled my creativity and tersely told me that I had brown hair, not pink. I also recall her telling my parents about my irreverent ways when I was picked up that day. I still haven’t forgiven her.

Many of us have no problem shelling out big bucks on wardrobe staples like the ubiquitous little black dress because it can be worn with different accessories and for countless occasions. Versatility makes it worth the splurge. However, we rarely have that mentality when it comes to jewelry. There’s either subtle everyday pieces or the statement-makers that make infrequent appearances. That doesn’t have to be the case. Stella & Dot’s Versatility Shop boasts nearly 100 items that can be worn multiple ways, making costume jewelry just as versatile as your LBD.

I was recently given the opportunity to review a piece from the collection and chose the Aida Tassel Necklace. The geometric design is inspired by the architecture of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar and crafted with an antique gold finish. But, as you’ll see below, its versatility is most appealing. Along with the tassel, each “fan” is removable to allow you to change the length of the pendant. I prefer the longest setting with three links and the opulent tassel (obviously), but you could go to the opposite end of the spectrum and pull all of the embellishments off. Without the pendant, the collar necklace adds a sleek hint of gold for a minimalist ensemble.

Behind the Baubles: Tarin Thomas

The next time you’re in search of dainty stacking rings, look no further than Tarin Thomas. Designer Kylie Nakao worked as a buyer for a New York boutique after graduating from Parsons School of Art & Design. Kylie reviewed jewelry from hundreds of vendors each season and noticed a lack of what she calls “cool, sophisticated, real jewelry,” the everyday pieces that mix seamlessly with the rest of one’s jewelry wardrobe. And with that, the Tarin Thomas collection was born. The pieces are a modern take on fine jewelry, created with precious and semi-precious gemstones and produced in sterling silver and gold.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
