Holiday Gift Guide for the Cook

December 7, 2017 by jessica Leave a Comment

Holiday Gift Guide for the Cook

I’m not sure if it’s because we finally have a house, but my wish list this year is heavily focused on kitchen- and bar-related gifts to upgrade our college-era things with nice versions that we’ll love for years to come. In fact, I’ve already been self-gifting with some of these ideas as you’ll read below!

I tried to keep this gift guide gender-neutral, since many home-related gifts need to be loved by everyone in the household — and let’s face it, we’re all shopping for more than just women when we look at interest-specific lists. (Does anyone else feel like many gift guides this year have heavy doses of pink and twee details?) Below, you’ll find nine of my favorite gift picks for the budding chef on your shopping list this year.

Serving Platter – Anyone who loves food is going to love a serving board, and there are so many gorgeous ones that any design you pick will be a welcome addition their collection. They’re perfect for curating artisanal cheese plates to occupy guests while the cook wraps up dinner in the kitchen.

Covered Dish – For around $80, you can snag a high-quality covered covered baking dish. This one goes from the freezer to the oven, and is elegant enough to serve from at the dining table. I prefer the white one, but it also comes in blue and red.

Cast Iron Pan – For whatever reason, I assumed cast iron pans were expensive and difficult to care for. I was wrong on both counts. We purchased this one by Lodge on Black Friday, which is the preferred brand for cast iron, and it’s as amazing as everyone claims. It even comes pre-seasoned so the recipient can start cooking right away. Just make sure the giftee knows how to take care of it to avoid rust. (Basically, wipe it out right after cooking, avoid using soap, dry it off with a towel, and then pop it into the oven at 250 degrees for around 15 minutes to dry it off completely. After the pan cools a bit, put a small amount of vegetable oil on a paper towel and rub it all over the pan until the oil absorbs.)

Serrated Knife – Why knife blocks don’t include a bread knife is beyond me. Treat your home chef to this often overlooked kitchen staple to keep loaves from crushing under the pressure of a regular knife. And don’t spend a lot on it. A serrated knife can’t really be sharpened when it dulls. (Granted, how often do serrated knives become dull when you’re only using them for bread?)

Canisters – I personally love the Instagram appeal of pretty canisters, but I always manage to talk myself out of actually buying a set. It seems indulgent, which is pretty much the best reason to treat someone to a set.

Kitchen Towels – If you need an ultra affordable gift or an add-on to something larger, these towels are it. They’re generously sized, wash well, and absorb a lot of water. I bought two for myself and loved them so much that I purchased three more to completely overhaul my towel drawer. Plus, the neutral colors go well with just about anyone’s kitchen decor.

Tea Pot – I don’t drink tea, but how cute is this tea pot?! It’s the tea lover’s take on Bodum’s French press that graced everyone’s gift guides a few years ago. (I do own the French press and can vouch for how amazing it is.)

Pinch Bowls – This is another gift that no one realizes they’d love until they actually start using them. They’re perfect for measuring spices and prepping ingredients before the flurry of cooking begins. The recipient can also use them as individual dip bowls.

Cookbook – Don’t you hate when you buy a cookbook and everything looks too advanced? The recipes in this cookbook look like they’re a good balance of ambitious and achievable. Plus, the cover is gorgeous enough to leave out on display.

Urban Explorer

December 5, 2017 by jessica 3 Comments

Last week I couldn’t stop singing Paul Oakenfold’s “Starry-Eyed Surprise” as I worked on the post for my star-print dress and now I can’t stop singing T-Pain’s “Low,” specifically the “boots with the fur” lyric, for obvious reasons. (My music choices are questionable, I realize this.) Hiking boots really aren’t my thing, but I fell in love with this quasi-practical pair because of the speckled navy and tan fur. It’s such an unexpected accent on a winter staple, and it’s pretty fun to boot. (See what I did there? 😉 ) I walked a few miles in them on Saturday and they stayed comfortable and plenty warm. Admittedly, we weren’t exactly experiencing true Midwestern winter temperatures at the time, but they seem like they’ll be a good choice when I’m not actually trudging through snow.

Weekend Reading

Weekend Reading 12.01.17

And just like that, it’s December! Dave and I are off to Chicago this weekend for the annual Christkindlmarket, which has become our tradition over the past four years to kick off the holiday season. There’s nothing like a warm mug of mulled wine to get you in the holiday spirit, and to encourage you to buy more ornaments that you possibly need! In addition to soaking in the festive atmosphere and tackling some holiday shopping, we have dinner reservations at The Publican (we’ve been meaning to go for years) and are planning to explore Logan Square during their holiday festivities on Saturday. I have to admit that I’m also pretty jazzed that the forecast puts the days’ high temperatures in the low 50s. Sure, brisk weather and snow flurries would add to the holiday scene, but this is the first year I won’t have to bundle up with multiple layers!

Weekend Reading:

  • We’re hoping to make a trip to Iceland work next year, and these gorgeously designed Airbnb rentals would make for incredible places to stay!
  • The architectural impact an arch can have in your home’s design.
  • Grace shares her favorite podcasts. I can vouch for The Daily!
  • New Orleans’ Cafe du Monde is one of the most Instagrammed restaurants of 2017. #Guilty
  • The best Ikea news from 2017.
  • How to fix a broken makeup powder or palette.
  • The IRL version of Instagrammers’ homes.
  • Nike’s failed attempt to resurrect its vintage Cortez-style shoe and challenge Adidas’ dominance of the old-school market.
  • There’s a beer named after Queen Bey.
  • Best books to read this winter.

Five Under $50:

  • Embroidered mules for $35. They’re best in black.
  • A crisp white blouse is a wardrobe staple. I love the loose silhouette of this one that would look great untucked with a pair of jeans.
  • These earrings are incredible, aren’t they? Plus you can save 25% with code GIFT25.
  • Earmuffs with a plaid headband.
  • A sweatshirt that’s more fun than your standard athleisure gear.

Earlier This Week:

  • The dress I’m obsessed with.
  • November’s sartorial confessions.

Wardrobe Update: November 2017

November 29, 2017 by jessica 2 Comments

Anthropologie Garden Party Earrings

I can barely believe this is the penultimate wardrobe update for 2017, and it was an expensive one at that! As you’ll see below, the heavy hitters to my wallet  were the coat and boots. I actually don’t mind spending more on winter wear when it needs to be practical (or as practical as those boots can be), warm, and not terribly boring. It’s just that I don’t typically buy both of those items in the same month! I also have a couple of Black Friday purchases heading my way, and I’m waffling between keeping and returning these spring shoes, so I’ll add those to December’s recap.

Wardrobe Update November 2017 :: Bedknobs & Baubles

PURCHASED
See all of this year’s sartorial purchases here.

  • Anthropologie ‘garden party’ earrings in red – I couldn’t help but treat myself to these festive earrings when I saw them in the store last weekend. They remind me of poinsettias.
  • Sam Edelman ‘Bronte’ hiking boots – I was on the hunt for a pair of chic, ankle-high winter boots and these fit the bill perfectly. I especially love the marled faux fur trim. They run true to size. I doubt I’ll wear them on the snowiest days, but it’s nice to have a weather-proof option that isn’t heavy L.L. Bean boots or a pair of Hunter wellies.
  • Madewell star-print silk dress – As you may have gathered from this post, this dress is one of my favorite purchases in a long time. Could you believe that I almost didn’t order it, assuming that the star print would look too much like a nightgown? I’m glad I went with my gut. I love the length, the cheeky row of buttons down the back, and the long sleeves. I went with my regular size medium. I’ve alternated between wearing it with red and turquoise flats, but I do love it with black shoes. I’ve just been putting off a visit to the cobbler to have my beloved black flats resoled. (I wore them approximately three times a week for two years, so it’s not surprising that I wore a small hole in the sole.)
  • LOFT ‘Woodland’ cutout ruffle yoke blouse – Do you also find yourself leaving with something when you head to a store to do a return? Yeah… This was an impulse purchase the other week, but it’s already become a well-loved item this month. I’m all about loose blouses with jeans lately, as mentioned here, so it was nice to add a new one to my wardrobe. I went with my typical size small with the brand and it’s still awfully roomy.
  • J.Crew swingy wool coat in grey – I happen to buy a new coat each year without really meaning to. I think it’s due to living in a climate with a very pronounced (and long) winter season. I wore the coat here for its blog debut and I’m still as enamored with it. The a-line body allows for bulky sweaters. This also runs true to size with enough room for curvy hips. (Speaking of which, one of my sartorial pet peeves is when brands don’t put a double zipper in a coat that goes past the waist. It can’t cost that much more to add it in!)

DIDN’T WORK OUT
Things I tried and didn’t love.

  • LOFT herringbone flare skirt – I was hopeful that this would be a cute work staple, but the fabric was pretty flimsy and I worried that it might snag the first time I wore it. I also wasn’t crazy about the seam that cut right across my butt. It’s a weird placement and not that flattering.
  • Target smocked dress – I really loved the fabric and the idea of this dress. I went with a medium and wonder if I should have went down a size because it seemed overwhelming on my frame. I also would have preferred it to be a couple of inches shorter.
  • LOFT flowery blouson shirtdress – The print is so cute and the weight of the fabric is wonderful. It’s polyester, but doesn’t feel like it’s going to be staticky and clingy. I just wasn’t crazy about the fit on me. Give it a shot, though!
  • LOFT smocked halter shell – My family’s holiday gatherings are on the casual side and I was hopeful that this would be a cute option to wear with jeans and a pair of statement earrings to feel festive, but not over-the-top. The idea of this top is there, but the fabric selection is pretty bad. It’s really thin and clingy.
  • LOFT plaid blanket scarf – I have a lot of scarves (don’t we all?), so one needs to be pretty great to be added to my collection. I didn’t like the feel of the fabric. It was obviously synthetic and felt thin, which isn’t the best for a Wisconsin winter. Great colors, though.
  • H&M faux fur jacket – For the record, I don’t think any faux fur coat is particularly flattering, but this one was really awful.
  • Banana Republic merino turtleneck – I need a replacement turtleneck for one that shrunk. This was too thin, though. I’m going to try this one next.

DAYDREAMING ABOUT
The items I just might add to my wardrobe next month.

  • Getting my black flats resoled.
  • A black turtleneck sweater to try.
  • I’d love this grey cashmere sweater if it’s included in a future promo.

Madewell silk button-back dress in star scatter

Don’t you just love when you find an item that’s a little unexpected and yet so perfectly you? That’s how I feel about this dress. I’m crazy about the slight swing shape that skims over curves without  looking oversized; and I love the sleeves, the line of buttons down the back, and the charming star print. The fact that it’s an easy-to-wear silk is just icing on the cake. I’ve already worn it four times since it arrived three weeks ago and I have a feeling that the festive starry print will be in heavier rotation now that we’re in the holiday season. The print also comes in a blouse and a skirt, which are both 25% off today!

There are a couple of additional sales I’m shopping today, including J.Crew’s Cyber Monday promotion. They’re offering 40% off your purchase, plus another 10% and free shipping until 12 p.m. EST. The one thing I really wanted is excluded (go figure), but I’m incredibly tempted to order this pink faux fur stole. It’d be darling with my emerald green winter coat. LOFT is another retailer worth browsing today with 50% off everything and free shipping on any order (a rarity with them!). I’d recommend this blouse (worn here last week) and this top. Shopping for your home instead? It’s the last day of CB2’s sale with 15% off and free shipping on orders of $29 or more. (I have and love these candle holders, which would make a great gift!) West Elm is celebrating today with major deals across its family of brands like a mere $100 for this Dutch oven — the black one is so chic!

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
